The co-founder and longtime president of Pixar updates and expands his 2014 New York Times bestseller on creative leadership, reflecting on the management principles that built Pixar’s singularly successful culture, and on all he learned during the past nine years that allowed Pixar to retain its creative culture while continuing to evolve.
For nearly thirty years, Pixar has dominated the world of animation, producing such beloved films as the Toy Story trilogy, Finding Nemo, The Incredibles, Up, and WALL-E, which have gone on to set box-office records and garner eighteen Academy Awards. The joyous storytelling, the inventive plots, the emotional authenticity: In some ways, Pixar movies are an object lesson in what creativity really is. Here, Catmull reveals the ideals and techniques that have made Pixar so widely admired—and so profitable.
As a young man, Ed Catmull had a dream: to make the first computer-animated movie. He nurtured that dream as a Ph.D. student, and then forged a partnership with George Lucas that led, indirectly, to his founding Pixar with Steve Jobs and John Lasseter in 1986. Nine years later, Toy Story was released, changing animation forever. The essential ingredient in that movie’s success—and in the twenty-five movies that followed—was the unique environment that Catmull and his colleagues built at Pixar, based on philosophies that protect the creative process and defy convention, such as:
- Give a good idea to a mediocre team and they will screw it up. But give a mediocre idea to a great team and they will either fix it or come up with something better.
- It’s not the manager’s job to prevent risks. It’s the manager’s job to make it safe for others to take them.
- The cost of preventing errors is often far greater than the cost of fixing them.
- A company’s communication structure should not mirror its organizational structure. Everybody should be able to talk to anybody.
Creativity, Inc. has been significantly expanded to illuminate the continuing development of the unique culture at Pixar. It features a new introduction, two entirely new chapters, four new chapter postscripts, and changes and updates throughout. Pursuing excellence isn’t a one-off assignment but an ongoing, day-in, day-out, full-time job. And Creativity, Inc. explores how it is done.

This Training Framework is based on the empirical study of the
procedural rights of suspects in four European Union (EU)
jurisdictions - England and Wales, France, the Netherlands and
Scotland - conducted in the period 2011-2013. The study focused on
three of the procedural rights set out in the EU Roadmap for
strengthening the procedural rights of suspected and accused
persons in criminal proceedings: the right to interpretation and
translation; the right to information and the letter of rights; and
the right of access to a lawyer before and during police
interrogation, as well as the right to silence. The results were
published in the book Inside Police Custody: An Empirical Account
of Suspects' Rights in Four Jurisdictions, Ius Commune Europaeum
No. 113. The objective of the training framework is to enhance the
knowledge, understanding and skills of criminal justice
practitioners - police officers and defence lawyers - in respect of
the procedural rights of suspects in police detention. It seeks to
do this by orientating the framework around the requirements of EU
law on procedural rights, as set out in the EU Directives referred
to above, and by suggesting appropriate training strategies. The
framework incorporates best-practice identified during the
observational stage of the research study, and is designed to be
applicable across EU Member States. Since training courses for
police officers and lawyers rarely focus exclusively on the
procedural rights of suspects, the training framework is not
intended to provide a model for stand-alone training. Building on
the findings of the research, and the pilot training programme
carried out as part of the research project, the training framework
is designed as a tool to be used in the planning of training
programmes on the procedural aspects of police custody, for both
police officers and lawyers. In this regard, it highlights the
procedural rights to be addressed through training, and the
training methods that may be suitable for ensuring their effective
delivery in practice. The research study and development of the
training framework was carried out by the Universities of
Maastricht, Warwick and the West of England, together with JUSTICE.
Avon and Somerset Police and the Open Society Justice Initiative
were also collaborators on the project.
The world's most famous mountain, Everest remains for serious
high-altitude climbers an ultimate goal. Ed Viesturs has gone on
eleven expeditions to Everest, reaching the summit seven times.
He's spent more than two years of his life on the mountain. No
climber today is better poised to survey Everest's various
ascents-both personal and historic. In The Mountain, Viesturs
delivers just that: riveting you-are-there accounts of his own
climbs as well as vivid narratives of some of the more famous and
infamous climbs throughout the last century, when the honour of
nations often hung in the balance, depending on which climbers
summited first. In addition to his own experiences, Viesturs sheds
light on the fate of Mallory and Irvine, whose 1924 disappearance
just 800 feet from the top remains one of mountaineering's greatest
mysteries, and on the multiply tragic last days of Rob Hall and
Scott Fischer in 1996, the stuff of which Into Thin Air was made.
Informed by the experience of one who has truly been there, The
Mountainaffords a rare glimpse into that place on earth where
Heraclitus's maxim-character is destiny-is proved time and again.
Complete with gorgeous photos of Everest, many of which were taken
by Viesturs himself, and shots taken on some of the legendary
historic climbs, The Mountainis an immensely appealing book for
active and armchair climber alike.
Combine the surprising truth about brain food with the cutting-edge science of brain metabolism to achieve extraordinary improvements to your emotional, cognitive, and physical health.
Are you struggling with attention problems, mood swings, food obsession, or depression? Whatever the issue, you have far more control over your thoughts, feelings, and behavior than you realize. Although medications may bring some relief, in Change Your Diet, Change Your Mind, Dr. Georgia Ede reveals that the most powerful way to change brain chemistry is with food, because that’s where brain chemicals come from in the first place.
In this provocative, illuminating guide, Dr. Ede explains why nearly everything we think we know about brain-healthy diets is wrong. We've been told the way to protect our brains is with superfoods, supplements, and plant-based diets rich in whole grains and legumes, but the science tells a different story: not only do these strategies often fail, but some can even work against us. The truth about brain food is that meat is not dangerous, vegan diets are not healthier, and antioxidants are not the answer.
Change Your Diet, Change Your Mind will empower you to:
- understand how unscientific research methods drive fickle nutrition headlines and illogical dietary guidelines
- weigh the risks and benefits of your favorite foods so you can make your own informed choices about what to eat
- evaluate yourself for signs of insulin resistance—the silent metabolic disease that robs your brain of the energy it needs to thrive
- improve your mental health with a choice of moderate-carbohydrate and ketogenic diets that you can personalize to your food preferences and health goals
Drawing on a wide range of scientific disciplines including biochemistry, neuroscience, and botany, Dr. Ede will ignite your curiosity about the fascinating world of food and its role in nourishing, protecting, and energizing your brain.

Capturing the Spoor describes and discusses the virtually unknown rock art of the northernmost reaches of South Africa, in the area of the Central Limpopo Basin. The title of the book comes from the belief held by some traditional Bantu-speakers that the San can ‘capture’ animal spoor and bewitch it in order to ensure hunting success. The authors use this as an analogy for understanding the behavior of people in the past through the traces they leave behind.
This book describes the work of four distinct cultural groups: the San; Khoekhoen (Khoikhoin or ‘Hottentots’), Venda and Northern Sotho, and, most recently, people of European descent. Further, it discusses the interaction and connection between the four groups. It is the first substantial body of work from South Africa to focus on an area outside the Drakensberg, which has become synonymous with ‘southern African rock art’. Although the book focuses on a specific region, it introduces anthropological information from the Cape to the greater Kalahari region. The text is interspersed with first-hand accounts of Kalahari and Okavango San beliefs and rites and discussions with traditional Bantu-speaking peoples. A distillation of 14 years of field surveying and research in the Central Limpopo Basin, it targets the general reader who would like to know more about southern Africa’s rock art traditions, but at the same time addresses many academic concerns.
A simple narrative line and copious endnotes, respectively, ensure that both ‘lay’ and academic readers will find the subject interesting. The text is abundantly illustrated with line drawings and expressed through photographs. A list of rock art sites in Limpopo that are open to the public will be included.
This is a rare publication where information that is collected is analyzed with the help of knowledge and experience accumulated by the local indigenous communities, whose have been seldom heard in this context before.
