The Problem of Time - Quantum Mechanics Versus General Relativity (Hardcover, 1st ed. 2017): Edward Anderson The Problem of Time - Quantum Mechanics Versus General Relativity (Hardcover, 1st ed. 2017)
Edward Anderson
R4,980 Discovery Miles 49 800 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

This book is a treatise on time and on background independence in physics. It first considers how time is conceived of in each accepted paradigm of physics: Newtonian, special relativity, quantum mechanics (QM) and general relativity (GR). Substantial differences are moreover uncovered between what is meant by time in QM and in GR. These differences jointly source the Problem of Time: Nine interlinked facets which arise upon attempting concurrent treatment of the QM and GR paradigms, as is required in particular for a background independent theory of quantum gravity. A sizeable proportion of current quantum gravity programs - e.g. geometrodynamical and loop quantum gravity approaches to quantum GR, quantum cosmology, supergravity and M-theory - are background independent in this sense. This book's foundational topic is thus furthermore of practical relevance in the ongoing development of quantum gravity programs. This book shows moreover that eight of the nine facets of the Problem of Time already occur upon entertaining background independence in classical (rather than quantum) physics. By this development, and interpreting shape theory as modelling background independence, this book further establishes background independence as a field of study. Background independent mechanics, as well as minisuperspace (spatially homogeneous) models of GR and perturbations thereabout are used to illustrate these points. As hitherto formulated, the different facets of the Problem of Time greatly interfere with each others' attempted resolutions. This book explains how, none the less, a local resolution of the Problem of Time can be arrived at after various reconceptualizations of the facets and reformulations of their mathematical implementation. Self-contained appendices on mathematical methods for basic and foundational quantum gravity are included. Finally, this book outlines how supergravity is refreshingly different from GR as a realization of background independence, and what background independence entails at the topological level and beyond.

Neo-Hindutva - Evolving Forms, Spaces, and Expressions of Hindu Nationalism (Paperback): Edward Anderson, Arkotong Longkumer Neo-Hindutva - Evolving Forms, Spaces, and Expressions of Hindu Nationalism (Paperback)
Edward Anderson, Arkotong Longkumer
R1,203 Discovery Miles 12 030 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

Neo-Hindutva explores the recent proliferation and evolution of Hindu nationalism - the assertive majoritarian, right-wing ideology that is transforming contemporary India. This volume develops and expands on the idea of 'neo-Hindutva' -- Hindu nationalist ideology which is evolving and shifting in new, surprising, and significant ways, requiring a reassessment and reframing of prevailing understandings. The contributors identify and explain the ways in which Hindu nationalism increasingly permeates into new spaces: organisational, territorial, conceptual, rhetorical. The scope of the chapters reflect the diversity of contemporary Hindutva - both in India and beyond - which appears simultaneously brazen but concealed, nebulous and mainstreamed, militant yet normalised. They cover a wide range of topics and places in which one can locate new forms of Hindu nationalism: courts of law, the Northeast, the diaspora, Adivasi (tribal) communities, a powerful yoga guru, and the Internet. The volume also includes an in-depth interview with Christophe Jaffrelot and a postscript by Deepa Reddy. Helping readers to make sense of contemporary Hindutva, Neo-Hindutva is ideal for scholars of India, Hinduism, Nationalism, and Asian Studies more generally. This book was originally published as a special issue of Contemporary South Asia.

Poetry at Work - (Masters in Fine Living Series) (Paperback): Scott Edward Anderson Poetry at Work - (Masters in Fine Living Series) (Paperback)
Scott Edward Anderson; Glynn Young
R367 Discovery Miles 3 670 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

There is value in taking poetry to work, and finding the poetry that's already there. Publications like Harvard Business Review and FastCompany are starting to write about the power of poetry-noting poetry's effectiveness in building creative thinkers and problem solvers. Yet there is no single source to guide those who are *at work* every day, with little direction for how to explore the power of poetry in the workplace. Glynn Young's Poetry at Work is that guide. From discussions about how poetry is built into the very fabric of work, to practical suggestions on how to be a poet at work, this is a book that meets a very real need. Altogether-a landmark book that moves beyond David Whyte's seminal book on poetry and the corporate world. More than just philosophy, this book brings the hope of practice and surprising discovery, the benefits of stress relief and increased accomplishment. *** The Masters in Fine Living Series is designed to help people live a whole life through the power of reading, writing, and just plain living. Look for titles with the tabs read, write, live, play, learn, or grow-and join a culture of individuals interested in living deeply, richly.

Thieves Like Us (Paperback): Edward Anderson Thieves Like Us (Paperback)
Edward Anderson
R363 Discovery Miles 3 630 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

When three small-time country gangsters break jail, they return to the only life they know-small-town bank robbing. When Bowie, the youngest of them, falls in love wit Keechie, one of the older gangster's cousins, it becomes a classic tale of love with nowhere to hide and no hope of reprieve. Originally published in 1937.

Feels Like Rain (Paperback): Edward Anderson Feels Like Rain (Paperback)
Edward Anderson
R680 Discovery Miles 6 800 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

FEELS LIKE RAIN is the largest collection of Edward Anderson's fiction and true crime writing ever assembled. For a period of about three years Edward Anderson's writing garnered the attention of the highest literary circles. He quickly moved from pulp fiction to literature with a natural sort of ease, a self-assurance that can only be called brilliant. His authentic stories of dustbowl drifters captured the times in perfect pitch. He was the inheritor of London, brethren to Steinbeck. His work appeared side by side with Faulkner, Wolfe and Katherine Ann Porter. He was compared to Hemmingway by literary critics of the day and was lured by Hollywood like so many other hot talents. His voice was a proletariat spark, an igniter for the masses. Anderson presumed to speak for his generation, the Starvation Army whose faces were gaunt as skulls and whose ribcages, when stripped of their tattered coverings, looked like xylophones hung from boney rails. Just as he found his voice, his narrative, his landscape and the people who would populate it, his artistic output inexplicably fizzled. It was as if all the creative juices had been squeezed out of him. Most of the work he left behind can be found in this single volume, It Feels Like Rain. Today Anderson is primarily remembered as a crime writer (the great Raymond Chandler considered Thieves Like Us the best bandit novel ever written, ) but it is time to give him his due and afford him his proper place in the halls of American literature. Edward Anderson's earthy, naturalistic style, his humanist approach and focus on social issues, places him the company of our finest writers. Introduction by Jonathan Eeds. FEELS LIKE RAIN is illustrated with artwork and photographs evocative of the 1930's.
