A Voice for Maria Favela - An Adventure in Creative Literacy (Hardcover): Antonio Leal A Voice for Maria Favela - An Adventure in Creative Literacy (Hardcover)
Antonio Leal; Translated by Alexis Gibbs, Elaine Chase
R3,425 Discovery Miles 34 250 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

This open access book, originally published in Portuguese in 1988 and now available in English for the first time, describes the Brazilian educator, Antonio Leal's, experiences teaching so-called "unteachable" children in Rio de Janeiro's favelas. A Voice for Maria Favela tells the story of how Leal considers what the children bring to the class, gradually engaging them in developing a narrative about Maria Favela, a single mother and housemaid. Leal uses the sounds within the story to draw out the students' abilities to see enunciation and articulation as a process of becoming literatized. A contemporary and admirer of Paulo Freire, Leal nevertheless recognised that his students' needs could not be theorized along Freirean lines of oppressor/oppressed. He devised an emancipatory approach that is more focussed on the individual child and their capacity for self-expression than those often found in critical pedagogy. The book puts forward a unique type of radical pedagogy and philosophy of education, developed through direct classroom observation. The book includes a substantial introduction written by the translator Alexis Gibbs (University of Winchester, UK) and preface by Inny Accioly (Fluminense Federal University, Brazil). Becoming Adult on the Move - Migration Journeys, Encounters and Life Transitions (1st ed. 2023): Elaine Chase, Nando Sigona,... Becoming Adult on the Move - Migration Journeys, Encounters and Life Transitions (1st ed. 2023)
Elaine Chase, Nando Sigona, Dawn Chatty
R3,516 Discovery Miles 35 160 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

This edited collection situates the migration of children and young people into Europe within a global framework of analysis and provides a holistic perspective that encompasses cultural media, ethnographic research and policy analysis. Drawing on a unique study of young unaccompanied migrants who subsequently became ‘adult’ within the UK and Italy, it examines their different trajectories and how they were impacted by their ability to secure legal status. Divided into three interlinked sections, it begins by examining the cultural repertoires about migration and adulthood to which migrants are sensitized in their countries of origin from a young age. This forms the contexts within which their direct experiences of turning 18 in a different country are explored. These combined insights are framed by an analysis of related policies which bureaucratically and institutionally shape these migratory experiences. This interdisciplinary volume will appeal to scholars and students in the fields of migration studies, international development, geography, sociology, anthropology, youth studies, law, education, health and wellbeing, social care and cultural studies.

Education, Migration and Development - Critical Perspectives in a Moving World (Hardcover): Amy North, Elaine Chase Education, Migration and Development - Critical Perspectives in a Moving World (Hardcover)
Amy North, Elaine Chase
R3,458 Discovery Miles 34 580 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

This open access book critically explores how education, migration and development intersect and interact to shape people, communities, societies, ideas, values, and action at local, national and international levels. Written by leading scholars and practitioners from across the globe, the book introduces the reader to how such interactions play out through a series of illustrative case studies drawn from scholarship and empirical research conducted in the global South. It considers education in all its forms and raises critical questions about its purpose and value in contexts of migration and (im)mobility across a range of low- and middle-income settings. The contributors engage with the multiple reasons for migration, and also consider how communities and societies are shaped not just by the movement of people but also of ideas, resources, norms, and values across different national and international contexts. Collectively the chapters offer new insights into: the considerations for education and international development that emerge when we apply a migration lens; key theoretical frameworks and approaches which can help us understand the education-migration-nexus; the opportunities and challenges that migration and (im)mobility create for education in contexts of development; emerging dilemmas regarding how best to promote justice, equity and wellbeing in and through education in contexts of migration; and how gendered and other inequalities are core considerations in the education-migration-development nexus. The book concludes with some reflections by the editors on cross-cutting themes generated through the volume, including some directions for future research. The authors offer an in-depth analysis of the experiences of over one hundred unaccompanied young migrants, primarily from Afghanistan, Albania and Eritrea. They show the lengths these young people will go to in pursuit of safety, security and the futures they aspire to. Supporting Young Parents - Pregnancy and Parenthood among Young People from Care (Paperback): Ian Warwick, Abigail Knight,... Supporting Young Parents - Pregnancy and Parenthood among Young People from Care (Paperback)
Ian Warwick, Abigail Knight, Elaine Chase, Peter Aggleton
R958 Discovery Miles 9 580 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

Invaluable in providing vivid illustrations of the strengths and needs of young parents who have been 'looked after' and, therefore of their children at the start of their lives. It illuminates policy and practice implications and points the way forward to what needs to be done to ameliorate their lives. Throughout, it presents its research in an accessible style and measured tone that make it difficult to put down.' - Extract from the Foreword by Ann Phoenix, Co-Director of the Thomas Coram Research Unit, Institute of Education, University of London Supporting Young Parents explores early pregnancy and parenthood from the perspectives of young men and women in and leaving care. Most discussion about teenage pregnancy and parenthood focuses on the negative consequences for teenagers and their children. Yet, for some young people, particularly those who have been disadvantaged in life, early parenthood may offer the security of a family life, a sense of stability and an opportunity to build emotional attachments. This book draws on authoritative research into the reasons for and experiences of pregnancy and parenthood among young people from local authority care. It questions the assumptions that early parenthood always limits young people's choices and opportunities and examines the types of support most likely to enable successful parenting. This book will be essential reading for community nurses, health visitors, social workers, academics and students working in the fields of health, education and social care.
