Discourse Particles in Asian Languages: Elin McCready, Hiroki Nomoto Discourse Particles in Asian Languages
Elin McCready, Hiroki Nomoto
R8,540 Discovery Miles 85 400 Ships in 12 - 19 working days

Within linguistics, there has been a great deal of interest in discourse particles for some time now, especially within semantics and pragmatics. The term ‘discourse particles’ has been used to cover a broad range of phenomena, including such things as ‘sentence final particles,’ ‘discourse adverbs’ and other related phenomena. However, most research in the area (particularly within formal semantics and pragmatics) focuses on a restricted set of languages, and there is little consensus on the proper formal treatment of particles, partly due to the limited range of data available. In recent years, there has been extensive development of the formal approach to discourse particles, which often treats these words as devices for marking information update. Also important is the extension of data to non-Western languages like Japanese, Korean or Chinese. These volumes are the first to give an exclusive focus on particles in non-European languages (in this case Asian languages), from the perspective of formal as well as non-formal semantics and pragmatics. These volumes include papers on Japanese, Mandarin, Tagalog, Kimaragang Dusun, Malay, Singlish, Thai and Vietnamese. The papers are informed by recent theoretical work in formal semantics and pragmatics relating to the meaning of particles. The collection contributes to our theoretical understanding of the meaning of discourse particles and to empirical knowledge of discourse particles in the languages of Asia.

Elin McCready, Katsuhiko Yabushita, Kei Yoshimoto
R3,710 Discovery Miles 37 100 Ships in 12 - 19 working days

This volume presents an exploration of a wide variety of new formal methods from computer science, biology and economics that have been applied to problems in semantics and pragmatics in recent years. Many of the contributions included focus on data from East Asian languages, particularly Japanese and Korean. The collection reflects on a range of new empirical issues that have arisen, including issues related to preference, evidentiality and attention. Separated into several sections, the book presents discussions on: information structure, speech acts and decisions, philosophical themes in semantics and new formal approaches to semantic and pragmatic theory. Its overarching theme is the relation between different kinds of content, from a variety of perspectives. The discussions presented are both theoretically innovative and empirically motivated.

Discourse Particles in Asian Languages Volume II - Southeast Asia: Hiroki Nomoto, Elin McCready Discourse Particles in Asian Languages Volume II - Southeast Asia
Hiroki Nomoto, Elin McCready
R4,169 Discovery Miles 41 690 Ships in 12 - 19 working days

This volume is the second in a two-part collection of research on discourse particles focusing exclusively on the languages of Asia from the perspective of formal as well as non-formal semantics and pragmatics. Despite increasing interest in discourse particles, most research in the area (particularly within formal semantics and pragmatics) focuses on a restricted set of languages, and there has been little consensus on the proper formal treatment of particles. The term "discourse particles" has been used to cover a broad range of phenomena, including such things as "sentence-final particles," "discourse adverbs," and other related phenomena. In recent years, there has been extensive development of the formal approach to discourse particles, which often treats these words as devices for marking information updates. It is vital however, to extend this data to non-Western languages, like Malay, Thai, or Vietnamese. These two volumes are the first to give an exclusive focus on particles in non-European languages (in this case, Asian languages), from the perspective of formal and non-formal semantics and pragmatics. This second volume includes chapters on Tagalog, Kimaragang Dusun (Malaysia), Malay, Singlish (Colloquial Singapore English), Thai, and Vietnamese. The chapters are informed by recent theoretical work in formal and non-formal semantics and pragmatics relating to the meaning of particles. The collection contributes to our theoretical understanding of the meaning of discourse particles and to empirical knowledge of discourse particles in the languages of Asia. It will be of interest to postgraduate students and scholars of semantics and pragmatics.

Takashi Onoda, Daisuke Bekki, Elin McCready
R1,538 Discovery Miles 15 380 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

This book constitutes the thoroughly refereed post-proceedings of four workshops held as satellite events of the JSAI International Symposia on Artificial Intelligence 2010, in Tokyo, Japan, in November 2010. The 28 revised full papers with four papers for the following four workshops presented were carefully reviewed and selected from 70 papers. The papers are organized in sections Logic and Engineering of Natural Language Semantics (LENLS), Juris-Informatics (JURISIN), Advanced Methodologies for Bayesian Networks (AMBN), and Innovating Service Systems (ISS).

The Semantics and Pragmatics of Honorification - Register and Social Meaning (Hardcover): Elin McCready The Semantics and Pragmatics of Honorification - Register and Social Meaning (Hardcover)
Elin McCready
R2,782 Discovery Miles 27 820 Ships in 12 - 19 working days

This book explores the semantics and pragmatics of honorifics, expressions that indicate the degree of formality that a speaker feels is required in interacting with another person. Although these expressions are found in many languages worldwide, this volume is the first to approach the area from the perspective of formal semantics and pragmatics. Elin McCready treats honorifics - and expressions with honorific import - as carriers of expressive content that contributes either directly or indirectly to a register corresponding to the current formality of the speech situation. The analysis is applied to a variety of empirical examples, including utterance and argument honorifics in Japanese, Thai, and several other languages. It is proposed that the distinct strategies that different languages use for honorification have implications for the grammaticality of certain combination of honorifics. The volume also explores the connections between honorification and a range of theoretical issues in social meaning and the expression of gender. It will hence appeal not only to researchers in formal semantics and pragmatics, but also to sociolinguists, anthropological linguists, and philosophers.
