In 'The Tree of Life' (2011) Jack (Hunter McCracken) is one of three brothers brought up in the 1950s by his spiritually-minded mother (Jessica Chastain) and pragmatic, no-nonsense father (Brad Pitt). After witnessing a disturbing event that shakes his world to the core, the young Jack struggles to reconcile the differing world views of his parents. Later, as a jaded middle-aged man with a failed marriage behind him, Jack (Sean Penn) retraces his emotional journey from the hope and innocence of childhood to his disillusioned adult years in a quest to rediscover meaning in his life.

Set in 1942, 'The Thin Red Line' (1998) follows US soldiers as they land on the Pacific island of Guadalcanal, hoping to capture it from the Japanese. When the job of venturing into the jungle falls to 'C for Charlie' company, the troops are faced by both the enemy and struggles within their own camp. As the carnage and destruction rains down around them, the conflict exacts a heavy toll upon the young soldiers, leading them on a path of disillusion and possibly death.

As a result, Tita's sister is offered Pedro and accepts, leaving Tita at home looking after her mother. Upset, Tita expresses her anger and sorrow through food, especially chocolate.

In 'A Little Princess' (1995), based on the novel by Frances Hodgson Burnett, Sara Crewe (Liesel Matthews)'s father goes to war and she is forced to leave her idyllic home in India and enroll at an English girls' school. With the news that her father is lost in battle, Sara is left alone and penniless, but through the power of her imagination she brings the magic and wonder of her Indian existence to the strict regime of Miss Minchin (Eleanor Bron)'s school. In 'The Secret Garden' (1993), also based on a Frances Hodgson Burnett book, young orphan Mary Lennox (Kate Maberly) is sent to stay with her uncle in a forbidding mansion. She not only discovers an invalid cousin she never knew she had but also a secret garden in need of repair.
