This book studies the role of international actors in the areas of
transitional justice and justice sector aid with respect to
traditional justice and legal pluralism in sub-Saharan Africa.
Based on a number of case studies, the chapters describe the kinds
of policies and interventions that are supported and financed by
international actors, with special attention for the kinds of
strategies that are deployed in order to address areas of tension
with human rights. The volume then explores the relationship
between international actors' practices and the body of knowledge
that exists in these domains, as well as in general socio legal
theory. Thereby, this contribution offers empirical data drawn from
examples of who is doing what in a series of case studies,
identifies regional trends and links them to the existing
literature by examining the extent to which the insights generated
so far by scholars and practitioners is reflected in the work of
international actors. Based on this, the book formulates a number
of hypotheses that may explain current trends and proposes
additional issues that need to be considered in future research
agendas. Finally, the volume links two fields of intervention that
have so far evolved in rather parallel ways and explores the
commonalities and differences that can be found in the areas of
transitional justice and justice sector aid.

in her second year of medical studies in 1939 when war was
declared, with fatal consequences for her and her family: they sere
forced to the Spanish frontier, then returned to Paris to a flat

break off her studies due to a quota system being imposed on Jewish
students.

Joel’s heart stops as the rest of the world welcomes the start of a new
century. What happens next will change the course of three people’s
lives forever . . .
It’s nearly midnight on the eve of the millennium when
eighteen-year-old Joel’s heart stops. A school friend, Kerry, performs
CPR for almost twenty exhausting minutes, ultimately saving Joel’s
life, while her best friend Tim freezes, unable to help.
That moment of life and death changes the course of all three lives

they’ve found love, discovered their vocation, or simply moved on,
their lives collide again.
Structured around the four simple steps involved in CPR, Eva Carter’s
How to Save a Life is both a love story and an exploration of what it
means to be brave – because bravery isn’t just about life or death
decisions; it’s also about how to keep on living afterwards . . .

Elgar Research Agendas outline the future of research in a given
area. Leading scholars are given the space to explore their subject
in provocative ways, and map out the potential directions of
travel. They are relevant but also visionary. This insightful
Research Agenda examines the multidimensional relationship between
heritage planning and pressing current societal challenges around
climate, identity and development. Mapping future avenues for the
field, it suggests new approaches to executing, studying and
reflecting on heritage planning. Expert international contributors
raise key questions that challenge practice and research to push
for structural and institutional change, highlighting how heritage
planning, conservation, and adaptive reuse have transformative
potential - and the responsibilities that come with such potential.
Chapters explore central topics including industrial heritage and
conservation planning, digital reconstruction methods and remote
sensing technologies, rural tourism, participation and heritage-led
regeneration, as well as issues around contestation and
politicization, and the conceptualisations of heritage planning.
Spanning the domains of theoretical and empirical insights, from
academic outlooks to professional challenges, this Research Agenda
will be a vital resource for academics and students of urban and
human geography, heritage studies, planning, urban design and
architecture. Its examination of particular heritage projects will
also be useful for policy makers and professionals working in the
heritage planning field.
