These stories have the effect of bringing the saints to life as
real people. In the course of reading these stories we happen upon
many fascinating cultural and historical topics, such as the
Christianization of Roman holidays, the symbolism behind the monk's
tonsure, Nero's "pregnancy," and the reason why chaste but
hot-blooded women can grow beards. At the same time these stories
draw abundantly on Holy Scripture to shed light on the mysteries of
the Christian faith. Table of Contents: Joshua, Saul, David,
Solomon, Rehoboam. Job, Tobit, Judith, St. Andrew, St. Nicholas the
Bishop, The Blessed Virgin, SS Gentian, Fulcian, Victorice, S.
Nicasius, St. Thomas the Apostle, St. Anastasia, S. Eugenia, S.
Stephen Protomartyr, S. John the Evangelist, the History of the
Innocents, S. Thomas, martyr, of Canterbury, S. Silvester, S. Paul
the first Hermit, S. Remigius, S. Hilary, S. Firmin, Macarias, Life
of S. Felix, S. Marcel, S. Anthony, S. Anthony, S. Fabian, S.
Sebastian, S. Agnes, S. Vincent, S. Basil, S. John the Almoner, and
S. Paul and of the name of conversion.
The words of Martin Luther King Jr.'s "I Have a Dream" speech have
become enshrined in US history. But after the end of King's
generation of leadership, what happened to the African American
struggle for freedom? Like the ancient Israelites, the African
American community has survived a four-hundred-year collective
trauma. What will it take for them to reach the promised land that
King foresaw-to be truly free at last? In this classic historical
and cultural study, Carl Ellis offers an in-depth assessment of the
state of African American freedom and dignity. Stressing how
important it is for African Americans to reflect on their roots, he
traces the growth of Black consciousness from the days of slavery
to the 1990s, noting especially the contributions of King and
Malcolm X. Ellis examines elements of Black culture and offers a
distinct perspective on how God is active in culture more broadly.
Free at Last? concludes with a call for new generations of "jazz
theologians" and cultural prophets to revitalize the African
American church and expand its cultural range. The book also
includes a helpful glossary of people, events, and terms. Ellis
writes, "It is my prayer that the principles contained in this book
will play a role in building bridges of understanding and
facilitating reconciliation where there has been alienation." With
a new preface by the author, this groundbreaking book is now
available as part of the IVP Signature Collection.

There are numerous reasons why a man chooses to delay his arrival
to the portal entry of what should be his safe place, his home. Why
Men Don't Come Home After Five sheds light on two behaviors that
are prevalent but mystical to a man's ability to understand why he
chooses to circle the block in his neighborhood several times
before he goes home, or why he chooses to hang out at the bar after
work. Indirect Aggression and Passive Aggression are behaviors that
can subtly wreak havoc in our homes, churches, workplace, and our
community. It is more dominant in the black community and among
women. Indirect Aggression is conceptualized as a form of
aggression in which a perpetrator attempts to harm the target while
concurrently trying to obscure their intent. The underlying factor
that undergirds this behavior is jealously. Passive Aggression
presents a different set of variables. Passive Aggression is a
deliberate and masked way of expressing covert feelings of anger.
This "sugar coated hostility" involves a variety of behaviors
designed to get back at another person without the other
recognizing the underlying anger. Often times, men are faced with
this behavior in multiple environments; however, the real
difficulty for men is when they are faced with this behavior at
home. This book does not offer a prescription to what the author
thinks is a real pathological problem within the Black community.
What the author offers in this book are biblical backdrops to
encourage the reader to look at their present situation internally
for strength and upwardly for guidance. Relationships are messy and
require the constant oversight of the ultimate Master.
It's Never 2 Late is a Rhema word for those who stand at the
crossroads of life. So often we assume that we have fallen so far
down and have done so much wrong that not even time can help us.
This book reminds us that the greatest love that this world has
ever known (Jesus) left eternity and stepped into time with the
sole purpose of giving us the right amount of time. If you have
made some mistakes in your life, this book is for you.
Why Keep Trying deals with the question that resonates in the mind
of all of God's children at some point. We all have had the desire
to give up when faced with a litany of problems. This book is
relevant to both the CEO (Chief Executive Officer) and the SSP
(Struggling Single Parent). It reminds every reader that failure is
not a part of your destiny. In the Midst of your situation if you
can grasp the concept of "what you make happen for others God will
make happen for you" victory is assured.

Congress annually considers several appropriations measures, which
provide funding for numerous activities, for example, national
defence, education, and homeland security, as well as general
government operations. Congress has developed certain rules and
practices for the consideration of appropriations measures,
referred to as the congressional appropriations process. This book
examines the procedural and legal issues associated with the
authorisation of appropriations; the limitations in appropriations
measures; omnibus appropriations; history of the appropriations
subcommittee structure; automatic continuing resolutions; locating
an agency or program within appropriations bills; and the causes,
processes and effects of the shutdown of the federal government.
This book is an autobiographical account of the life and times of
Phineas F. Ellis of Castle Hill, Aroostook County, Maine. Mr. Ellis
was first and foremost a true public servant. From the bold stand
that he took that resulted in a new mail line out of Ashland,
Maine, to the financial sacrifices he made to serve in the Maine
State Legislature, to the many acts of service and kindness he
rendered during the years he served as the Town Manager of Mapleton
and Castle Hill, Phin gave a great deal to all around him. As we
join Phin on his journey, we are able to watch over his shoulder
and catch a glimpse into the lives and observe the culture of the
people in rural Aroostook County during the early to mid 20th
century. We learn of the infamous lynching of Jim Cullen, hear the
story of a U.S. Senator's grandfather nearly losing his life at a
remote lumber camp, and are told of premonitions received as he
relates stories of being inspired to help others. We also learn how
the Arthur R. Gould Memorial Hospital in Presque Isle, Maine was
established and observe the functions of the new hospital through
Phin's role as its first administrator. Phineas Franklin Ellis was
a pioneer who understood the value of hard work. He was full of
humility and determined to help those around him by taking an
active role in bringing positive changes to their lives. This book
will inspire and delight. It will remind you of where you came from
and will help you see what is most important in life.
