In an era of globalisation, syndicated lending and consolidation within the banking industry, virtually all industries will have international dealings, whether directly or indirectly, and will therefore be exposed to consequential risks. This book gives the reader a thorough understanding of how to calculate, analyse and manage such risks.
What are credit rating agencies? Many people paying for ratings and ratings reports do not fully understand what they are buying and how these agencies really work. Ratings agencies wield immense power over the fate of individual corporations, countries, and whole economies, yet their workings are remarkably opaque. Many events over the past decade, such as the Asian crisis and the demise of certain financial institutions have highlighted some of the limitations of ratings agencies, and raised questions as to their accountability and the level of service they provide. In this comprehensive account of the workings of the rating agencies,Andrew Fight explains the role played by ratings agencies, how ratings are obtained, the methodologies through which organisations are assessed and the wider consequences of these decisions.

Excerpt: "Clearly, this would be the most fitting way. As Zach
prepares to cast away the only copy of his newly finished book, a
hint of irony collides with rationale, not unlike the jarring force
of a blunt rotten two-by-four striking the back of his head. Had
creating been this easy since the beginning? Only a month earlier,
he had begun writing what he considered a running tab on life's
day-to-day discreetly disclosed secrets, but more importantly,
desires. Now, the only copy of those captured realizations on the
face of the planet lay in print beside him, the original file
deleted from existence. Eyes fixated on the road, Zach continues
down what is essentially barely more than a dirt path through the
jungle, driving ever closer towards the sea. Perhaps it would seem
somewhat more of a sorrowful event if it weren't for the whirlwind
of fanciful ideas that were contained in the three-hundred pages of
what seemed more like a journal than a novel. As it were, there was
nothing Zach wished for more than to finish the deed at hand and
get back to the new life he had started. Recollecting on the
memories of the recent events that glimmered in the front of Zach's
mind, the jeep comes to a stop and he dismounts from the door-less
vehicle. Walking towards the coastline, he carefully tightens the
lid on what closely resembles an awkwardly over-sized Mason jar.
Inside are the pages of a book, rolled into a cylinder shape,
securely tied with a red silk ribbon. Also part of the jar's
contents is a handwritten note, which had been folded in half four
times and tied to a fist-sized volcanic rock, using the same red
ribbon. The note, which explains the story of the jars contents,
was a last minute addition Zach felt necessary to include for
whoever might find this impossibly intriguing collaboration of
thoughts and observations. Upon reaching the edge, Zach rears back
and launches the glass jar and its contents over the edge of the
cliff, making sure to aim clear of the rocks below."
