Son Jarocho was born as the regional sound of Veracruz but over
time became a Mexican national genre, even transnational, genre-a
touchstone of Chicano identity in the United States. Mario Barradas
and Son Jarocho traces a musical journey from the Gulf Coast to
interior Mexico and across the border, describing the
transformations of Son Jarocho along the way. This comprehensive
cultural study pairs ethnographic and musicological insights with
an oral history of the late Mario Barradas, one of Son Jarocho's
preeminent modern musicians. Chicano musician Francisco Gonzalez
offers an insider's account of Barradas's influence and Son
Jarocho's musical qualities, while Rafael Figueroa Hernandez delves
into Barradas's recordings and films. Yolanda Broyles-Gonzalez
examines the interplay between Son Jarocho's indigenous roots and
contemporary role in Mexican and US society. The result is a
nuanced portrait of a vital and evolving musical tradition.

Plato's Animals examines the crucial role played by animal images,
metaphors, allusions, and analogies in Plato's Dialogues. These
fourteen lively essays demonstrate that the gadflies, snakes,
stingrays, swans, dogs, horses, and other animals that populate
Plato's work are not just rhetorical embellishments. Animals are
central to Plato's understanding of the hierarchy between animals,
humans, and gods and are crucial to his ideas about education,
sexuality, politics, aesthetics, the afterlife, the nature of the
soul, and philosophy itself. The volume includes a comprehensive
annotated index to Plato's bestiary in both Greek and English.
Readers of Plato have often neglected the Laws because of its
length and density. In this set of interpretive essays, notable
scholars of the Laws from the fields of classics, history,
philosophy, and political science offer a collective close reading
of the dialogue "book by book" and reflect on the work as a whole.
In their introduction, editors Gregory Recco and Eric Sanday
explore the connections among the essays and the dramatic and
productive exchanges between the contributors. This volume fills a
major gap in studies on Plato's dialogues by addressing the
cultural and historical context of the Laws and highlighting their
importance to contemporary scholarship. -- Indiana University Press
The candidacy of Barack Obama has energized millions of Americans
who have turned out in record numbers to participate in the 2008
presidential primaries. Much of his candidacy's success has been
built upon the support he has among the youth and other new voters.
Obama has convinced them that he is the candidate of "change." This
book, written by three young voters, seeks to expose Obama's
background, his inexperience, his far left political agenda, and
demonstrate that not all the youth are behind him. Through their
leadership positions in national organizations, Bierfeldt,
Gonzalez, and Steinhauser have had frequent contact with youth
leaders on college campuses across the country. Through this book,
they aim to challenge their peers (and others) to question their
attraction to the Obama candidacy and his big government proposals
- proposals which do not represent change, but simply the status
quo. Real change would put power back in the people's hands, not
more power concentrated in Washington. This is the biggest problem
in our political system and Obama doesn't want to "change" this
crisis, he only wants to exacerbate it. The rising generation today
is fortunate enough to stand on the shoulders of the many
generations before us that built America. Before this generation
becomes responsible for handing over the sacred keys of the White
House, we should ask, Who is the Real Barack Obama? This book arms
voters with substantive research that they can use to learn more
about where Obama stands on the important economic, national
security, and social issues, and expose his background, character,
and far left ideology. Whether or not you agree with his policies,
after you examine the evidence that this book offers, you will
begin to peel away the fiction, fizzle out the hype, and unmask the
real Barack Obama.

ensenanza."
A Companion to Ancient Philosophy is a collection of essays on a
broad range of themes and figures spanning the entire period
extending from the Pre-Socratics to Plato, Aristotle, and the
Hellenistic thinkers. Rather than offering synoptic and summary
treatments of preestablished positions and themes, these essays
engage with the ancient texts directly, focusing attention on
concepts that emerge as urgent in the readings themselves and then
clarifying those concepts interpretively. Indeed, this is a
companion volume that takes a very serious and considered approach
to its designated task-accompanying readers as they move through
the most crucial passages of the infinitely rich and compelling
texts of the ancients. Each essay provides a tutorial in close
reading and careful interpretation. Because it offers foundational
treatments of the most important works of ancient philosophy and
because it, precisely by doing so, arrives at numerous original
interpretive insights and suggests new directions for research in
ancient philosophy, this volume should be of great value both to
students just starting off reading the ancients and to established
scholars still fascinated by philosophy's deepest abiding
questions.
