In the wide range of essays, poems and pamphlets contained in this
volume we witness Voltaire exercising his polemical powers on a
remarkable multiplicity of fronts, only a matter of months before
he got involved in the Calas affair. Most notably, he offers a
spirited defence of French classical theatre against English
influence in "Appel a toutes les nations", he launches a fierce
attack against Rousseau in "Lettres sur la Nouvelle Heloise" and
"Rescrit de l'empereur de la Chine", and exposes the injustice of
the excommunication of actors in "Conversation de M. l'intendant
des Menus". Confrontation between the embattled encyclopedistes and
an increasingly confident and aggressive anti-philosophe faction in
the Paris Parlement and Versailles also links a number of
miscellaneous texts together in this volume.
Owing to the anatomic complexity of the neck and the diver sity of
pathologic entities affecting it, the cervical region has long been
of great semiological interest. Physical examination is an easy
means of evaluating the size and origin of a solitary cervical
mass, yet valid interpretation can prove difficult when the normal
morphology of the neck has been altered; excellent examples are
patients with extensive fibrosis or scarring secondary to previous
irradiation or surgery. Like wise, physical examination cannot
assess the relations of a pathologic process to adjacent structures
- e. g., invasion can not be distinguished from simple displacement
-and it is un suitable for monitoring therapeutic efficacy, such as
the re sponse of metastatic nodes to medical management. Between
physical examination, which remains fundamental, and exploratory
surgical procedures, which are often the only means of obtaining
indispensable anatomic proof for diagno sis, lie a number of recent
imaging techniques including com puted tomography and magnetic
resonance imaging using surface coils that provide invaluable
information for the in vestigation of cervical pathologies.
Real-time ultrasonogra phy occupies a privileged position because
of its noninvasive ness, rapidity, and reliability, especially when
performed by a specially trained examiner."
What could it mean to feel eternal? In Experience and Eternity in
Spinoza, Moreau fundamentally transforms our inherited
understanding of Spinoza's philosophy. Through a detailed study of
Spinoza's concept of 'experience', Moreau shows how Spinoza extends
the power of reason to domains frequently seen as irrational, from
common life to history, language to the passions. Where previously
Spinoza's thought was identified exclusively with the geometrical
method, Moreau demonstrates that by mobilising his unique account
of 'experience', Spinoza is able to capture the singularity of
individuals, their lives, languages, passions and societies. With
readings of each of Spinoza's most famous works, from the Treatise
on the Emendation of the Intellect to the Ethics, but also
unprecedented studies of minor writings such as the Hebrew Grammar,
Moreau renews our understanding of Spinoza's philosophy by showing
the simultaneous operation of the geometrical and experiential
methods. Finally, this new vision of Spinoza's philosophy
illuminates the enigmatic experience of eternity mentioned in Book
V of Spinoza's Ethics.
1739-1741 were stressful but highly creative years for Voltaire,
his output ranging from science to polemic, from politics to
poetry. Scientific research remains at the forefront, with Voltaire
championing Newton's theories despite the opposition of the
scientific establishment. Voltaire was in this period anxious to
consolidate his reputation, and his continuing reflections on the
nature of a literary career led to the publication of both his
personalised "Memoire du sieur de Voltaire" and more general
reflections on literary quarrels in "Memoire sur le satire". Public
quarrels had become an integral part of the 'Republic of Letters'
and Voltaire's disillusionment is clear in "Lettres sur les
inconvenients attaches a la litterature". His verse ranges from
crude satire to some of his most touching lyric poetry in the
"Stances a Madame Du Chatelet". Altogether, this collection brings
together the complex and contrasting works of a complex and
flexible writer.
