In a global context in which phenomena of migration play an ever more important role, the ways individual and collective experiences of migration are covered in the media, represented in culture, and interpreted are coming under increasing scrutiny. This book explores the complex relationship between creative engagements with migration on the one hand, and forms of knowledge about migration on the other, inquiring into the ways aesthetic practices are intertwined with knowledge structures. The book responds to three pressing research questions. First, it analyses how fictional texts, plays, images, films, and autobiographical accounts mediate forms of knowledge about migration. Second, it identifies the ways in which specific media approaches and aesthetic practices influence people’s ideas about and awareness of migratory experiences in a globalized world. Finally, it delineates how historical perspectives help us compare epistemological approaches to migration in the nineteenth, twentieth, and early twenty-first centuries, and how these approaches affect the way critics and the public responded to and thought about different forms of (forced) migration. Bringing together renowned scholars working across disciplines, it investigates the possibilities and limitations that different media present when it comes to reflecting on, communicating, and imagining experiences of migration, and how these representations in turn create ways of knowing and understanding migration.

Der Band widmet sich der Frage, wie sich europäische Romantiken im Zeitraum zwischen ca. 1790 und 1850 mit ökologischen Theoremen und umweltbezogenen Problembereichen auseinandersetzen. Die Aufsätze dieses interdisziplinären Sammelbandes untersuchen dabei insbesondere den spezifischen Beitrag, den die Künste bei der Ausgestaltung und Formierung eines modernen ökologischen Denkens leisten, das seit Ende des 18. Jahrhunderts Gestalt annimmt, in den 1860er Jahren mit Ernst Haeckels Definition der ‚Ökologie‘ terminologisch grundiert wird und bis heute unser Verständnis von ökologischen Zusammenhängen prägt. Der Band bereichert auf diese Weise die bereits lebendige Forschungslandschaft der Environmental Humanities im Allgemeinen, des Romantic Ecocriticism im Speziellen und fragt mit Blick auf die ‚Romantischen Ökologien‘ nicht nur nach der Diversität und den konfliktreichen Bruchlinien ökologischer Denkformen um 1800, sondern auch nach dem Stellenwert, dem Eigen- und möglicherweise Mehrwert des Ästhetischen sowie, damit verknüpft, nach der Rolle des Romantischen für die Entstehung, Reflexion und Transformation eines ökologischen Denkens.

Die literatur- und kulturwissenschaftliche Forschung zu Karoline von Günderrode (1780–1806) setzt seit gut zwei Jahrzehnten neue Akzente. Das Werk der Autorin wird in diesem Zuge als singulärer Beitrag zur Literatur-, Kultur- und Geistesgeschichte der Romantik profiliert, während der ‚Mythos Günderrode‘, der sich auf Leben, Lieben und vor allem Ableben der Autorin konzentriert, fundamental hinterfragt wird. Der vorliegende Band schließt an diese Re-Lektüren und neuen Perspektiven an. Er präsentiert wichtige Untersuchungen zu bislang wenig beleuchteten Facetten von Günderrodes Texten, die u.a. Poetologie, Ästhetik sowie ideengeschichtliche oder politische Aspekte umfassen, und legt zudem eine kommentierte Auswahl bislang kaum bekannter Briefe der Autorin in Transkription und Abbildung vor.

Dealing with forces is part of the basic inventory of artistic processes. In giving shape and movement to material, such forces are manifested in a specific form; as push and pull, for example, as heaviness and lightness, but also as attachment and dissolution. The articles in the book examine notions of formative and motive forces using examples from art, music, dance, theater, photography and literature. The questions posed not only cover how historical notions of force (such as energeia and vis from ancient rhetoric) are adopted, taken further, and correlated with mechanically, metaphysically and organologically based concepts of force, but also how, in the examination of form and movement, the inherent concepts of force are manifested or presented in a new light.
