Relative entropy has played a significant role in various fields of mathematics and physics as the quantum version of the Kullback-Leibler divergence in classical theory. Many variations of relative entropy have been introduced so far with applications to quantum information and related subjects. Typical examples are three different classes, called the standard, the maximal, and the measured f-divergences, all of which are defined in terms of (operator) convex functions f on (0, ) and have respective mathematical and information theoretical backgrounds. The -Renyi relative entropy and its new version called the sandwiched -Renyi relative entropy have also been useful in recent developments of quantum information. In the first half of this monograph, the different types of quantum f-divergences and the Renyi-type divergences mentioned above in the general von Neumann algebra setting are presented for study. While quantum information has been developing mostly in the finite-dimensional setting, it is widely believed that von Neumann algebras provide the most suitable framework in studying quantum information and related subjects. Thus, the advance of quantum divergences in von Neumann algebras will be beneficial for further development of quantum information. Quantum divergences are functions of two states (or more generally, two positive linear functionals) on a quantum system and measure the difference between the two states. They are often utilized to address such problems as state discrimination, error correction, and reversibility of quantum operations. In the second half of the monograph, the reversibility/sufficiency theory for quantum operations (quantum channels) between von Neumann algebras via quantum f-divergences is explained, thus extending and strengthening Petz' previous work. For the convenience of the reader, an appendix including concise accounts of von Neumann algebras is provided.

Means of Hilbert Space Operators (Paperback, 2003 ed.): Fumio Hiai, Hideki Kosaki Means of Hilbert Space Operators (Paperback, 2003 ed.)
Fumio Hiai, Hideki Kosaki
R1,302 Discovery Miles 13 020 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

The monograph is devoted to a systematic study of means of Hilbert space operators by a unified method based on the theory of double integral transformations and Peller's characterization of Schur multipliers. General properties on means of operators such as comparison results, norm estimates and convergence criteria are established. After some general theory, special investigations are focused on three one-parameter families of A-L-G (arithmetic-logarithmic-geometric) interpolation means, Heinz-type means and binomial means. In particular, norm continuity in the parameter is examined for such means. Some necessary technical results are collected as appendices.

The Semicircle Law, Free Random Variables and Entropy (Paperback, New edition): Fumio Hiai, Petz Denes The Semicircle Law, Free Random Variables and Entropy (Paperback, New edition)
Fumio Hiai, Petz Denes
R3,256 Discovery Miles 32 560 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

The book treats free probability theory, which has been extensively developed since the early 1980s. The emphasis is put on entropy and the random matrix model approach. The volume is a unique presentation demonstrating the extensive interrelation between the topics. Wigner's theorem and its broad generalizations, such as asymptotic freeness of independent matrices, are explained in detail. Consistent throughout the book is the parallelism between the normal and semicircle laws. Voiculescu's multivariate free entropy theory is presented with full proofs and extends the results to unitary operators. Some applications to operator algebras are also given. Based on lectures given by the authors in Hungary, Japan, and Italy, the book is a good reference for mathematicians interested in free probability theory and can serve as a text for an advanced graduate course.

Introduction to Matrix Analysis and Applications (Paperback, 2014): Fumio Hiai, Denes Petz Introduction to Matrix Analysis and Applications (Paperback, 2014)
Fumio Hiai, Denes Petz
R2,144 Discovery Miles 21 440 Ships in 9 - 15 working days

Matrices can be studied in different ways. They are a linear algebraic structure and have a topological/analytical aspect (for example, the normed space of matrices) and they also carry an order structure that is induced by positive semidefinite matrices. The interplay of these closely related structures is an essential feature of matrix analysis. This book explains these aspects of matrix analysis from a functional analysis point of view. After an introduction to matrices and functional analysis, it covers more advanced topics such as matrix monotone functions, matrix means, majorization and entropies. Several applications to quantum information are also included. Introduction to Matrix Analysis and Applications is appropriate for an advanced graduate course on matrix analysis, particularly aimed at studying quantum information. It can also be used as a reference for researchers in quantum information, statistics, engineering and economics.
