Through the unique format of this text, David has given the
answers to nearly six hundred questions that have plagued many
regarding the book of Revelation. The product of his work is a book
that addresses these concerns and amplifies the need for one to
have a personal relationship with God. The following is just a
sample.
If Babylon was destroyed by the Persians, how can it be
destroyed again?
How important are truth and justice today?
But what is justice when it comes to God and us?
Just what does it mean to fear God?
Exactly who are the beast and false prophet?
When one thinks of heaven, what is the picture that comes to
mind?
How many people can heaven hold?
If over 2,000 years have passed without Christ's return, what
assurance is there that He will return?

The Western World is becoming atheist. In the space of three
generations churchgoing and religious belief have become alien to
millions. We are in the midst of one of humankind's great cultural
changes. How has this happened? Becoming Atheist explores how
people of the sixties' generation have come to live their lives as
if there is no God. It tells the life narratives of those from
Britain, Western Europe, the United States and Canada who came from
Christian, Jewish and other backgrounds to be without faith. Based
on interviews with 85 people born in 18 countries, Callum Brown
shows how gender, ethnicity and childhood shape how individuals
lose religion. This book moves from statistical and broad cultural
analysis to use frank, humorous and sometimes harrowing personal
testimony. Becoming Atheist exposes people's role in renegotiating
their own identities, and fashioning a secular and humanist culture
for the Western world.
Totch Brown's memoirs of vanished days in the Ten Thousand Islands
and the Everglades-the last real frontier in Florida, and even
today the greatest roadless wilderness in the United States--are
invaluable as well as vivid and entertaining, for Totch is a
natural-born story-teller, and his accounts of fishing and gator
hunting as well as his life beyond the law as gator poacher and
drug runner are evocative and colorful, fresh and exciting."" -
from the foreword by Peter Matthiessen In the mysterious wilderness
of swamps, marshes, and rivers that conceals life in the Florida
Everglades, Totch Brown hung up his career as alligator hunter and
commercial fisherman to become a self-confessed pot smuggler.
Before the marijuana money rolled in, he survived excruciating
poverty in one of the most primitive and beautiful spots on earth,
Chokoloskee Island, in the mangrove keys known as the Ten Thousand
Islands located at the western gateway to the Everglades National
Park. Until he wrote this memoir--recollections from his childhood
in the twenties that merge with reflections on a way of life dying
at the hands of progress in the nineties-Totch had never read a
book in his life. Still, his writing conveys the tension he
experienced from trying to live off the land and within the laws of
the land. Told with energy and authenticity, his story begins with
the handful of souls who came to the area a hundred years ago to
homestead on the high ground formed from oyster mounds built and
left by the Calusa Indians. They lived close to nature in shacks
built of tin or palmetto fans; they ate wild meat, Chokoloskee
chicken (white ibis), swamp cabbage, even--when they were
desperate--manatee; and they weathered all manner of natural
disaster from hurricanes to swarms of "swamp angels" (mosquitoes).
In his grandpa's day, Totch writes, outlaws and cutthroats would
"shoot a man down just as quick as they'd knock down an egret,
especially if he came between them and the plume birds." His
grandparents were both contemporaries of Ed J. Watson, the subject
of Peter Matthiessen's best-selling Killing Mr. Watson, and Totch
is featured in the recent award-winning PBS film Lost Man's River:
An Everglades Adventure with Peter Matthiessen. He also appeared in
Wind Across the Everglades, the 1957 Budd Schulberg movie in which
Totch and Burl Ives sing some of Totch's Florida cracker songs.
Global theory represents an influential and popular means of
understanding contemporary social and political phenomena. Human
identity and social responsibilities are considered in a global
context and in the light of a global human condition. A global
perspective is assumed to be new and to supersede preceding social
theory. However, if contemporary global theory is influential, its
identity, assumptions and novelty are controversial. Global Theory
from Kant to Hardt and Negri scrutinises global theory by examining
how contemporary global theorists simultaneously draw upon and
critique preceding modern theories. It re-thinks contemporary
global ideas by relating them to the social thought of Kant, Hegel
and Marx, and in so doing highlights divergent ambiguous aspects of
contemporary global theories, as well as the continuing impact of
the ideas of Kant, Hegel and Marx.
Iain McLean reexamines the radical legacy of AdamSmith, arguing
that Smith was a radical egalitarian and that his work supported
all three of the slogans of the French Revolution: liberty,
equality, and fraternity. McLean suggests that Smith's The Theory
of Moral Sentiments , published in 1759, crystallized the radically
egalitarian philosophy of the Scottish Enlightenment. This book
brings Smith into full view, showing how much of modern economics
and political science is in Smith. The author locates Smith's
heritage firmly within the context of the Enlightenment, while
addressing the international links between American, French, and
Scottish histories of political thought.
The decline of infections, starvation, heart attack, and stroke has
allowed people to reach extreme old age--and ushered in disability,
dementia, and degenerative disease, with profound consequences for
the self and society. In chapters echoing Dante's nine circles of
hell, Dr. Guy Brown explores these vital issues at various levels,
from the cell, to the whole body, to society and how all this new
medical technology affects the meaning of death. He tracks the
seismic shifts in the causes and character of death that are
rocking medicine and reveals how technological innovations, such as
cloning and electronic interfaces, hint at new modes of "survival"
after death.
Exposed to powerful new economic forces, and undergoing dramatic
ownership reforms and technological changes, China's industries are
modernizing at a breakneck pace. In many industries, the outcomes
have been chaotic and poorly aligned with societal objectives. This
book analyses the transformation and modernization of China's
industries through a detailed investigation of the wool and wool
textile industries. The authors argue that to remain
internationally competitive in the post WTO accession era, Chinese
industries need to confront a critical new phase in the
modernization process - that of improving management practices and
industry co-ordination. Modernizing China's Industries is a
comprehensive, integrated and in-depth investigation of industry
transformation and modernization. The extensive first-hand
research, across a range of industry segments and participants,
spans almost two decades. The analysis reveals much about industry
modernization and transition in China for a broad range of
industries and therefore provides invaluable information for
developing strategies and accessing opportunities within China.
This book offers unique insights for academics and researchers in
Asian studies, transition studies and industrial transformation, as
well as policymakers and industry leaders interested in both the
intricacies and mega-forces involved in China's industrial
modernization. The comprehensive industry analysis also provides a
valuable reference for professionals in the increasingly
China-centric world of wool and wool textiles as well as offering
insights for other textile industry professionals.
