Theories of Political Processes - A Bibliographic Guide to the Journal Literature, 1965-1995 (Hardcover, New): Gregory G. Brunk Theories of Political Processes - A Bibliographic Guide to the Journal Literature, 1965-1995 (Hardcover, New)

An unfortunate consequence of the incredible explosion in the number of social science journals since the 1960s is that the literature has become highly balkanized. Today articles on politics are routinely published in so many disciplines that it has become almost impossible for scholars to trace major trends outside of their own subfields. Nor can Ph.D. candidates ensure they have mastered the literature, as it is difficult even to discover much of what has been published. This book addresses these problems by providing a much-needed general guide to important journal articles about politics. In compiling this guide to 10,000 of the most significant articles about politics that have been published in all disciplines, Brunk considered over 250,000 candidate papers. He focuses on five types of research: articles of major theoretical importance, articles offering empirical tests of theories, articles dealing with subjects not addressed elsewhere, articles providing broad reviews of the theoretical literature, and articles about politics in non-political science journals. These are grouped by subfield and by the specialized topics that have received the most intensive scholarly attention, allowing researchers easy access to the bibliographical information that they need.

Superconducting Quantum Electronics (Paperback, Softcover reprint of the original 1st ed. 1989): Volkmar Kose Superconducting Quantum Electronics (Paperback, Softcover reprint of the original 1st ed. 1989)

With the surprising discovery of superconductivity at temperatures above 100 K, this field was not only brought into the public eye, but also stimulated research in universities, scientific institutions and industry, thus continuing the fascinating development which began with the discovery of the Josephson effect in the sixties. Cryoelectronics has become a special branch of cryophysics and cryotechnics and today plays a prominent role whenever high resolution and precision measurements are required. Motivated by this development, seven years ago scientists working in cryoelectronics in the Federal Republic of Germany felt the necessity for regular meetings allowing a free exchange of ideas and results achieved. Seminars under the title of "Kryoelektronische Bauelemente" were held for the first time at the Physikalisch-Technische Bundesanstalt in Braunschweig in 1982 on the occasion of the 100th anniversary of the birth of Walther MeiBner, a pioneer in superconductivity. Since then, meetings have been held every year at different venues in Germany. It is now felt that the status of this field necessitates a review of the results of the past, a description of the current state of the art, and a discussion of future perspectives. This book, entitled SUPERCONDUCTING QUANTUM ELECTRONICS is a collection of invited lectures and contributions which will inform the reader on the most interesting problems involving fundamentals, sensitive detectors and precision metrology being studied by different groups.

The Ethics of Cultural Appropriation undertakes a comprehensive and systematic investigation of the moral and aesthetic questions that arise from the practice of cultural appropriation. * Explores cultural appropriation in a wide variety of contexts, among them the arts and archaeology, museums, and religion * Questions whether cultural appropriation is always morally objectionable * Includes research that is equally informed by empirical knowledge and general normative theory * Provides a coherent and authoritative perspective gained by the collaboration of philosophers and specialists in the field who all participated in this unique research project

Value Assumptions in Risk Assessment - A Case Study of the Alachlor Controversy (Paperback): Conrad G Brunk, Lawrence Haworth,... Value Assumptions in Risk Assessment - A Case Study of the Alachlor Controversy (Paperback)
Conrad G Brunk, Lawrence Haworth, Brenda Lee
R1,087 Discovery Miles 10 870 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

"Value Assumptions in Risk Assessment" is a case study of the Alachlor Controversy of 1985 in which the Canadian Minister of Agriculture cancelled the registration of the herbicide alachlor. This book demonstrates the opinion that risk assessments by scientific experts as well as ordinary citizens are guided by dominant values held by the assessors. It examines what these values typically are, how they work within a risk assessment, and some implications of reconsidering risk debates as primarily debates about values.

Throughout, the book draws the conclusion that such debates are not primarily debates about science itself, but rather consist of political debate among different value frameworks, different ways of thinking about moral values, different conceptions of society, and different attitudes toward technology and toward risk-taking itself. The larger question in the analysis of these risk assessments is which set of values will ultimately prevail.
