Intergroup Relations (Paperback, Revised): Walter G. Stephan, Cookie White Stephan Intergroup Relations (Paperback, Revised)
Walter G. Stephan, Cookie White Stephan
R1,516 Discovery Miles 15 160 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

Explores the stereotypes, prejudices, and discriminatory behavior of individuals and the manner in which these cognitions, feelings, and behaviors both affect others and are affected by others. Stephan and Stephan suggest measures to help overcome bias and improve intergroup relations that utilize techniques for eliminating stereotypes, reducing prejudice, and resolving conflicts in real-world situations. Designed to enrich all of our lives by combatting preconceptions, this book makes a significant contribution to our understanding of ourselves and others. The authors look at school desegregation in the United States as an extended case study. Throughout the book, they address social identity theory; culture shock and ethnocentrism; the effectiveness of deterrence, negotiation, mediation, and unilateral de-escalation; as well as the contact hypothesis. This social psychological analysis of intergroup relations is appropriate for undergraduates and graduates in social psychology, sociology, communications, and counseling.

Studies in Austrian Capital Theory, Investment, and Time (Paperback, 1986 ed.): Malte Faber Studies in Austrian Capital Theory, Investment, and Time (Paperback, 1986 ed.)
Malte Faber; Assisted by P. Bernholz, W. Boege, M. Faber, W. Guth, …

The neglect of time in general and of the time structure of production in particular in mainstream economics led to the rebirth of the Austrian tradition in the seventies. The names of BERNHCLZ, HICKS, KIRZNER and VON WEIZSACKER are representative of different approaches. In 1979 my "Introduction to Modern Austrian Capital Theory" appeared, in which I unified various papers BERNHOLZ and I had written. I also linked our approach to those of VON NEUMANN, of HICKS and of neoclassical capital theory. These "Studies" supplement and continue my "Introduction" in various ways. With all the authors of the present volume I have cooperated for several years. This volume is subdivided into five parts. The first one, Historical Perspectives, gives first an outline on the development of Austrian capital theory from its origins to the present. Next it relates Modern Austrian Capital Theory to SRAFFA's theory and to the Austrian subjectivists' pure time preference theory of interest. The latter theory is represented in its opposition to the traditional productivity-cum-time preference explanation of interest, which is. common t9 neoclassical and BOHM-BAWERKian capital theory alike. The Austrian subjectivist pure time preference theory has been misinterpreted in its recent presentation, which has led to misunderstandings. It is shown that there is no real contradiction between the two appoaches.

The world is desperately in need of selfless, Christlike leadership. The world has seen countless leaders: kings, priests, emperors, generals, preachers who led tiny flocks, and warriors who led mighty armies. Yet in all the ages of the earth, from the kings of Europe to the heads of families, a single leader stands out as the One who has had the greatest impact the world has ever known: a humble man named Jesus of Nazareth. What elements combine to create the perfect leader? Using Jesus as the example, authors Eric Stephan and R. Wayne Pace answer this question in To Lead as Jesus Led. When their search through volumes on leadership failed to capture the essence of true leadership, they decided to turn to the scriptures. There they found the truth, and now they reveal the important elements of successful leadership. With valuable suggestions taken straight from the scriptures, they will help the reader to weed out common misconceptions about leadership and narrow the focus of what leadership really is. Readers will also learn to exercise principles of good leadership and, most important of all, take the steps necessary to becoming the kind of person others will want to follow. To Lead as Jesus Led will prove to be an important addition to the library of anyone who wishes to become more like Jesus in their associations with friends, family, and all those they come in contact with.

Improving Intergroup Relations (Paperback): Walter G. Stephan, Cookie White Stephan Improving Intergroup Relations (Paperback)
Walter G. Stephan, Cookie White Stephan
R5,277 Discovery Miles 52 770 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

As we begin a new millennium, humankind is still plagued by intergroup conflict, racism, prejudice, stereotyping, and discrimination. This book is intended both as supplemental reading for courses and as a practical guidebook for individuals and programs interested in reducing prejudice and improving intergroup relations. It provides the only comprehensive review and compilation of techniques of improving intergroup relations. There?s a huge amount of literature on the causes and nature of prejudice, reflecting great interest in the topic, but the literature on prejudice reduction is more scattered, spread across a range of theoretical and applied sources. This book brings these literatures together, with an emphasis on helping to elucidate what works and why.
