With attention to the methodological questions that arise from the attempt to study such changes empirically, it offers new theoretical foundations for understanding the social construction and reconstruction of spaces through communicative action. Seeing communicative action as the basic element in the social construction of reality and conceptualizing communication not only in terms of the use of language and texts, but as involving any kind of objectification, such as technologies, bodies and non-verbal signs, it considers the roles of both direct and mediatized (or digitized) communication. An examination of the conceptualization of the communicative (re-)construction of spaces and the means by which this change might be empirically investigated, this book demonstrates the fruitfulness of the notion of refiguration as a means by which to understand the transformation of contemporary societies. As such, it will appeal to sociologists, social theorists, and geographers with interests in social construction and urban space.

In der sozialwissenschaftlichen Raumforschung ist die UEberlegung selbstverstandlich geworden, dass Raume vor dem Hintergrund menschlicher Bedeutungszuschreibungen gesellschaftliche Wirklichkeit werden und als 'soziale Konstruktionen' verstanden werden mussen. Eine systematische Forschung hat sich dazu jedoch noch nicht entwickelt. Dies gilt fur die raumwissenschaftlich orientierte Soziologie, die Sozialgeographie und die Planungswissenschaften gleichermassen. Es fehlt an systematischen Erkenntnissen uber Mechanismen einer kommunikativen und diskursiven Konstruktion von Raum. Diese Lucke soll vorliegender Band schliessen. Einige Beitrager stellen UEberlegungen dazu an, wie die Konstruktion von Raum kommunikations- und diskurstheoretisch gefasst werden kann und in welchem Zusammenhang Wissen, Handeln, Kommunikationen, Diskurse und Materialitat stehen. Neben den eher theoretisch gehaltenen Beitragen stehen Beitrage mit konkreten empirischen Analysen zur kommunikativen Konstruktion von Stadten und Regionen. Dort werden kommunikative Prozesse in raumbezogenen Akteursgruppen, Netzwerken und oeffentlichen Diskursen betrachtet. Unter anderem werden Aushandlungsprozesse beleuchtet, in denen bestimmte Raumvorstellungen entstehen, vermittelt und anschlussfahig gemacht werden, in denen sie Akzeptanz finden und letztlich Raum gestaltend wirksam werden koennen oder aber in denen sie blockiert, abgelehnt bzw. verhindert werden. Berucksichtigt wird auch, wie raumbezogene Kommunikationen systematisch fur Planungsprozesse fruchtbar gemacht werden koennen.
