Miguel Lost & Found in the Palace (Paperback): Barbara B Murphy Miguel Lost & Found in the Palace (Paperback)
Barbara B Murphy; Illustrated by George Ancona
R336 Discovery Miles 3 360 Ships in 12 - 19 working days

For ages 9-12. In this sketchy but heartfelt novel, Miguel Rivera illegally enters the US with his parents when he is five and undergoes a variety of social and political traumas by the time he reaches middle school. The family takes in an orphan girl, and then grows to include twin sisters for Miguel as well. When his father disappears after leaving Texas to set up a new family home for them in New Mexico, mother and son become partners in keeping the rest of the family together and hopeful. When they move to New Mexico, Miguel encounters a gang of bullies, but makes new friends who help him discover the dignity of his ancestry as well as new inner strength. Meanwhile, a secondary set of characters includes a US Border Patrol officer and his nasty son, Miguel's peer. Although a lot happens in very few pages and both character and plot detail are sacrificed to brevity, the many issues raised are interesting. Some, including the guarded social interactions of illegal residents and the slave labour into which adults are still forced today, are unusual to find in fiction for this age group. Useful for social studies, though not for literature classes.

Can We Help? Kids Volunteering to Help Their Communities (Paperback): George Ancona Can We Help? Kids Volunteering to Help Their Communities (Paperback)
George Ancona; Illustrated by George Ancona
R264 Discovery Miles 2 640 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

Real kids make a real difference in their communities in this vibrantly photographed chronicle by George Ancona.

George Ancona celebrates the joy of kids giving back. In one after-school program, middle-school students mentor and tutor younger children. Via a special partnership, schoolchildren help professionals train assistance dogs for people with disabilities. At a community farm, families plant, grow, and harvest produce for soup kitchens and charities. In these and other examples of volunteering, kids of all ages work together knitting hats and scarves for those who could use warm clothes, packing hot meals to deliver to housebound people, and keeping roadways clean. Young humanitarians reading these accounts may well be inspired to find ways that they can help, too.
