This book explores emerging practices in distance education that have been facilitated by the development of educational technology. The volume examines core themes in distance education including online education at scale, embodiment in online environments, connectivity in online education and the personalisation of learning experiences within online education. The first section of the book examines online teaching tools, and explores how they are being used to enhance and promote student learning. The second looks at some of the broader challenges encountered by online teachers and those responsible for designing online learning material. While this volume will be of significant interest to distance learning universities and colleges, it will also be a valuable resource to traditional Higher Education Institutions, who are increasingly searching for innovative ways to reach and teach their students. This edited collection will be of value to scholars of online education as well as practitioners and policy makers looking to enrich their notions of online pedagogy.

George Callaghan was given free reign to explore his creative abilities after returning to his native Northern Ireland at fourteen years old. Even at that young age, he had a knack for painting, sculpture and making jewellery, and music-so it should be no surprise that he went on to become a leading harp maker. In this autobiography, he looks back at how he cultivated his creative abilities amid the harsh industrial landscape of Belfast, during the days of apartheid in South Africa, and elsewhere. He also looks back at: Belfast's rich history of shipbuilding; life growing under apartheid; joys and disappointments of childhood; becoming a champion boxer; conquering the world of advertising. Despite his success in the corporate world, it's been Callaghan's work as an artist and musician that has truly captured the attention of the world. He shares the many adventures that made him who he is in The Last Minstrel.
Merde! Disaster! Brendas stiff upper lip and sense of fair play are shattered, like her endeavors to beautify this crumbling, weary excuse of a French Village. Who could have done this?! The mutterings of disgruntled citizens, resentment towards the woman from the land that a Frenchman pees in the direction of! And those Colonials! Brazenly disregarding middle class etiquette! Well really! One must not let standards slip! Is this the end of her Camelot? Will the mists clear to reveal a village in turmoil? Poor Brenda! Her world values are in tatters as she systematically trawls through her list of the bizarre oddballs that she could have provoked. " A hilarious look at over romanticized village life" " The rose colored glasses are off to reveal what seethes beneath idyllic French life" " Buying a house in France? Think again!"
Fulfilling the need for a UK-centred introductory personal finance text, this dedicated author team provide academic, professional and general readers with what they really need to know about personal finance. Personal Finance is an innovative text that builds confidence and competence in making personal financial decisions. Using a socio-economic approach to personal finance, it illuminates the many factors and relationships that help improve financial capability, including: - Decisions on spending, borrowing, saving and investing are set within a broader context - Concepts such as income and expenditure, risk and return, and assets and liabilities are related to issues of home ownership, caring responsibilities and lifestyle changes - The impact of important economic events, such as the financial crises of recent years, on individuals and households is shown - Case studies are used to demonstrate practical relevance, while diagrams and activities help distil complex issues into digestible form 'Keeping a text in this area up to date was always going to be a critical and monumental challenge. The editors have done a timely and impressive job.' - Professor Peter Howells, Centre for Global Finance, UWE Bristol 'Personal Finance addresses a particular gap, and the overview is impressive.' - Steve McKay, Bristol University (Personal Finance Research Centre) 'What distinguishes this book is that it focuses not only on 'what you need to know' about personal finance, but also on 'what you might be interested in knowing' about the socio-economic context in which financial decisions are made - it makes the text more useful for an academic course and certainly makes for interesting reading.' - Jane King, Oxford Brookes University 'Personal Finance presents the subject of financial planning in an intellectually stimulating way which links theory to practice and is comprehensible to both the student and the layperson.' - James Mallon, Napier University
