From the mid 1990s to the present day, agricultural biotechnology -
GM crops and foods - has been the focus of debate and conflict in
many European countries. Contrasting views of risks and benefits,
trust in science and regulation, the understanding of science,
media coverage and mobilization of the public by civil society
groups - all have been cited as drivers of public opinion. Designed
in part to allay public concerns about GM agriculture, a European
moratorium led to a new regulatory framework. The long running
controversy is a signal that the public's view cannot be ignored in
the development and implementation of new technologies arising out
of genomics. Yet, agricultural biotechnologies are but one
development in this area. Genetic testing and the uses of genetic
information, the cloning of human cells and tissues, and transgenic
animals are potentially no less challenging for the public and
regulators alike. This volume, by an international group of social
scientists from Europe, North America and Japan, presents a series
of comparative perspectives on the social, ethical and legal
implications of genomics. The aim is to capture lessons from the
controversies of the 1990s and to raise the level of debate on the
societal implications of new developments in genomics.
A social representations approach offers an empirical utility for
addressing myriad social concerns such as social order, ecological
sustainability, national identity, racism, religious communities,
the public understanding of science, health and social marketing.
The core aspects of social representations theory have been debated
over many years and some still remain widely misunderstood. This
Handbook provides an overview of these core aspects and brings
together theoretical strands and developments in the theory, some
of which have become pillars in the social sciences in their own
right. Academics and students in the social sciences working with
concepts and methods such as social identity, discursive
psychology, positioning theory, semiotics, attitudes, risk
perception and social values will find this an invaluable resource.

To what extent -- and why -- do many people share similar views in
socially significant domains such as politics, the economy, race,
and gender? Both the conceptual and substantive approaches to these
questions are explored in this new book. Part I introduces the
approach adopted, reviews recent developments in the area of
belief, and endeavors to synthesize speculations from anthropology
and from psychology. Part II concentrates on four different sets of
concepts for the social psychological study of widespread beliefs.
Finally, contributions from six social psychologists -- each
examining a substantive area or series of studies with an analysis
of the empirical work in that area -- comprise Part III. This fully
up-to-date work provides a broad conceptual approach to this
contemporary, important topic. Social psychologists, social
anthropologists and sociologists will find this work particularly
useful.
