Historical sports drama. Threatened with a boycott of their 1936
Olympic Games unless they allow Jewish athletes to take part, Nazi
Germany are forced to let international high jump champion and
German Jew Gretel Bergmann (Karoline Herfurth) represent them in
the games. Fearful that any achievement by her might undermine the
German ideology of the time, they conspire to replace her with
another woman, Marie Ketteler (Sebastian Urzendowsky). But the
secrets that Marie holds, if uncovered, could damage the party even
more so...
This book treats important topics in "Acoustic Echo and Noise
Control" and reports the latest developments. Methods for enhancing
the quality of transmitted speech signals are gaining growing
attention in universities and in industrial development
laboratories. This book, written by an international team of highly
qualified experts, concentrates on the modern and advanced
methods.
Users of signal processing systems are never satis?ed with the
system they currently use. They are constantly asking for higher
quality, faster perf- mance, more comfort and lower prices.
Researchers and developers should be appreciative for this
attitude. It justi?es their constant e?ort for improved systems.
Better knowledge about biological and physical interrelations c-
ing along with more powerful technologies are their engines on the
endless road to perfect systems. This book is an impressive image
of this process. After "Acoustic Echo 1 and Noise Control"
published in 2004 many new results lead to "Topics in 2 Acoustic
Echo and Noise Control" edited in 2006 . Today - in 2008 - even

In this book, an international team of highly qualified experts
treats important topics in "Acoustic Echo and Noise Control" and
report the latest developments. Methods for enhancing the quality
of transmitted speech signals are gaining growing attention in
universities and in industrial development laboratories.
This book is organized in five parts: Part I gives a short
introduction to acoustic echo and noise control. Part II deals with
multi-microphone processing. In Part III, advanced methods for both
linear and nonlinear echo cancellation are presented, and
techniques for intelligent control of hands-free telephones are
introduced. Part IV is devoted to noise reduction procedures. An
in-depth treatment of conventional and of advanced methods is
given, followed by a model based approach using Kalman filters.
Finally, in Part V, selected applications of acoustic echo and
noise control as well as speech and audio processing in general are
outlined. Topics such as auditory scene analysis, wave field
synthesis for spatial sound reproduction, in-car communication
systems, and hearing aids are treated.

Over a quarter of a century ago, the first edition of this book
(published in East Germany in 1981) was a huge best seller. Yet
unfortunately it was never reprinted and it soon became a scarce
collector's item. The reason: one of its co-authors, the chess
trainer Gerhard Schmidt, left for the West. He thus became persona
non grata in East Germany and the book was banned there. Despite
the book's excellent qualities, which were acclaimed in chess
circles, from then on its success could only be an underground one.
However, the subject of the book is timeless and transcends
frontiers, and so at last we have a new edition, fully revised by
the original authors themselves to include modern games by
world-class players such as Garry Kasparov, Vishy Anand, Vladimir
Kramnik and Judit Polgar. The book explains, clearly,
systematically and comprehensively, the strategy and tactics
associated with the open file: how files are opened, blocked,
occupied and exploited as roads along which to invade the enemy
position. A brief introduction lays the theoretical foundations and
is followed by carefully selected and organised material in the
form of illustrative games, in all of which the open file is the
dominant or deciding factor. In each game there is a pause at a key
position where a clear verbal assessment is given; these
assessments alone are of huge instructional value, since they do
nothing less than teach the reader how strong chessplayers think:
what to look for, how to assess, how to plan. The book benefits not
only from Gerhard Schmidt's experience as a trainer but also from
the huge knowledge and skill gained by Grandmaster Wolfgang Uhlmann
during his long and successful career in top-class chess, which at
one point brought him close to the world title, and made him
indisputably one of Germany's greatest ever chessplayers.
Textmaterial zuganglich. Grundlage hierfur bietet eine
poststrukturalistische Vermittlung wirkungsasthetischer und
diskursanalytischer Modelle. Band 1 behandelt die Poems of Ossian,
die zeitgenoessischen Diskurse sowie die Fruhphase der Rezeption;

Kernenergie informieren will.
Gerhard Schmidt August

Torn between the one-sided materialistic way of looking at
nutrition and the ancient nutritional traditions from the Far East,
we have to develop sound judgment so that our "daily nutritional
practices are in accord with the Spirit." Beginning with milk, a
universal foodstuff, Dr. Schmidt discusses protein, the carrier of
the vital activity of the formative force; fats and oils, the
stimulators of warmth and the inner intensification of the soul;
carbohydrates, the mediators of form and consciousness; and the
minerals, the earthly support of human Ego-organization. He shows
how we can free ourselves from "vitamin thinking" and replace it
with a dynamic method of looking at nutrition. This book, a sequel
to The Dynamics of Nutrition, is a valuable, challenging
contribution toward "a realistic striving for health."
