Funeral Rites in Contemporary Korea - The Business of Death (Hardcover, 1st ed. 2019): Gil Soo Han Funeral Rites in Contemporary Korea - The Business of Death (Hardcover, 1st ed. 2019)
Gil Soo Han
R2,327 Discovery Miles 23 270 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

This book explores 21st century Korean society on the basis of its dramatically transforming and rapidly expanding commercial funeral industry. With insights into contemporary Confucianism, shamanism and filial piety, as well as modernisation, urbanisation, the division of labour and the digitalisation of consumption, it is the first study of its kind to offer a sophisticated, integrated sociological analysis of how the commodification of death intersects with capitalism, popular culture and everyday life in contemporary Korea. Through innovative analyses of funeral advertising and journalism, screen and literary representations of funerals, online media, consumer accounts of using funeral services and other sources, it offers a complex picture of the widespread effects of economic development, urbanisation and modernisation in South Korean society over the past quarter century. In the aftermath of the Korean "economic miracle" novel ways of paying respect to deceased kin have emerged; using Max Weber's concept of "pariah capitalism", Gil-Soo Han shows how the heightened obsession with and boom in the commodification of death in Korea reflects radical transformations in both capital and culture. Minorities and Media - Producers, Industries, Audiences (Hardcover, 1st ed. 2017): John Budarick, Gil Soo Han Minorities and Media - Producers, Industries, Audiences (Hardcover, 1st ed. 2017)
John Budarick, Gil Soo Han
R3,874 Discovery Miles 38 740 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

This book examines the relationships between ethnic and Indigenous minorities and the media in Australia. The book places the voices of minorities at its centre, moving beyond a study of only representation and engaging with minority media producers, industries and audiences. Drawing on a diverse range of studies - from the Indigenous media environment to grassroots production by young refugees - the chapters within engage with the full range of media experiences and practices of marginalized Australians. Importantly, the book expands beyond the victimization of Indigenous and ethnic minorities at the hands of mainstream media, and also analyses the empowerment of communities who use media to respond to, challenge and negotiate social inequalities.

Nouveau-riche Nationalism and Multiculturalism in Korea - A media narrative analysis (Paperback): Gil Soo Han Nouveau-riche Nationalism and Multiculturalism in Korea - A media narrative analysis (Paperback)
Gil Soo Han
R1,433 Discovery Miles 14 330 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

The unprecedented economic success of South Korea since the 1990s has led in turn to a large increase in the number of immigrants and foreign workers in Korean industries. This book describes and explains the experiences of discrimination and racism that foreigners and 'new' Koreans have faced in a multicultural South Korea. It looks at how society has treated the foreigners and what their experiences have been given that common discourse about race in Korea surrounds issues of Korean heterogeneity and pure blood nationalism. Starting with critiques of Korean scholarship and policy framework on multiculturalism, this book argues for the need to revisit the most fundamental aspect of multiculturalism: the host population's ability to respect new comers rather than discriminate against them. The author employs a critical realist understanding of racism and attempts to identify long-lasting institutional factors which make Korean society less than welcoming 'new' or temporary Koreans. A large number of new reportages are identified and systematically analysed based on the principles of grounded theory method. The findings show that nouveau-riche nationalism and pure-blood nationalism are widely practised when Koreans deal with 'foreigners'. As a newly industrialised and highly successful nation, Korean society is still in transition and treats foreigners according to economic standard of their countries of origin. As one of the very first books in English about foreigners' experiences of Korean nationalism, multiculturalism and discrimination, it will be of great interest to students and scholars of Sociology, Ethnic studies, Asian studies, Korean studies, Media studies and Cultural studies.

Korean Diaspora and Media in Australia - In Search of Identities (Paperback): Gil Soo Han Korean Diaspora and Media in Australia - In Search of Identities (Paperback)
Gil Soo Han
R1,035 Discovery Miles 10 350 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

An essential dimension of why one becomes an immigrant is based on a quest for identities - who one is, whom one wants to be, and how one wants to live. There is much in common between immigrants of the past and immigrants today in terms of what they seek through diasporic life. However, one key difference relates to how they express the processes of searching for their identities. This book illuminates the ways in which Korean immigrants in Australia express their identities through autobiographies, novels, church websites, and popular weekly magazines. Korean Diaspora and Media in Australia also examines the role of the Korean immigrant church in contributing to the formation of transnational identities. Han's in-depth analysis is informed by the concepts of reflexivity and internal conversation from a tradition of critical realism. Internal conversation is enabled through human reflexivity (the regular application of mental ability) and is the process for individual agents to work out their best reactions to social conditions. Han carefully explains this process and thoughtfully applies it to the Korean community's search for identities in Australia.

Calculated Nationalism in Contemporary South Korea - Movements for Political and Economic Democratization in the 21st Century... Calculated Nationalism in Contemporary South Korea - Movements for Political and Economic Democratization in the 21st Century (Hardcover)
Gil Soo Han
R3,490 Discovery Miles 34 900 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

Nationalism in a nation-state reflects its emergent structural, cultural, and personal properties at a given time. In the politico-historical context of South Korea and the globe, the fruits of the 1968 Revolution in France could not reach Korean society under its military regime and exploitative economic structure. This continued to frustrate the grassroots and especially social actors in South Korea, which eventually brought about the June Struggle in 1987 and the 2016-2017 Candlelight Revolution. Calculated Nationalism in Contemporary South Korea sketches Korean grassroots' perception of their nation-state, national identities, and what they desire regarding the future direction of their nation-state. The grassroots have openly spoken out about their frustrations through political rallies and media. This book attempts to reflect the minds of Korean progressives regarding, in particular, the forcibly recruited Japanese military "comfort women," Abe's trade provocation against South Korea in 2019, reunification, the 2016-2017 Candlelight Revolution, National Flag-carriers' struggles, and bullying at work.
