Christopher Gill provides a new translation and commentary on the
first half of Marcus Aurelius' Meditations, and a full introduction
to the Meditations as a whole. The Meditations constitute a unique
and remarkable work, a reflective diary or notebook by a Roman
emperor, that is based on Stoic philosophy but presented in a
highly distinctive way. Gill focuses on the philosophical content
of the work, especially the question of how far it is consistent
with Stoic theory as we know this from other sources. He argues
that the Meditations are largely consistent with Stoic theory-more
than has been often supposed. The work draws closely on core themes
in Stoic ethics and also reflects Stoic thinking on the links
between ethics and psychology or the study of nature. To make sense
of the Meditations, it is crucial to take into account its overall
aim, which seems to be to help Marcus himself take forward his own
ethical development by creating occasions for reflection on key
Stoic themes that can help to guide his life. This new edition will
help students and scholars of ancient philosophy make sense of a
work whose intellectual content and status have often been found
puzzling. Along with volumes in the Clarendon Later Ancient
Philosophers series on Epictetus and Seneca, it will help to chart
the history of Stoic philosophy in the first and second century AD.
The translation is designed to be accessible to modern readers and
all Greek and Latin are translated in the introduction and
commentary.
Aristotle in Aquinas's Theology explores the role of Aristotelian
concepts, principles, and themes in Thomas Aquinas's theology. Each
chapter investigates the significance of Aquinas's theological
reception of Aristotle in a central theological domain: the
Trinity, the angels, soul and body, the Mosaic law, grace, charity,
justice, contemplation and action, Christ, and the sacraments. In
general, the essays focus on the Summa theologiae, but some range
more widely in Aquinas's corpus. For some time, it has above all
been the influence of Aristotle on Aquinas's philosophy that has
been the centre of attention. Perhaps in reaction to philosophical
neo-Thomism, or perhaps because this Aristotelian influence appears
no longer necessary to demonstrate, the role of Aristotle in
Aquinas's theology presently receives less theological attention
than does Aquinas's use of other authorities (whether Scripture or
particular Fathers), especially in domains outside of theological
ethics. Indeed, in some theological circles the influence of
Aristotle upon Aquinas's theology is no longer well understood.
Readers will encounter here the great Aristotelian themes, such as
act and potency, God as pure act, substance and accidents, power
and generation, change and motion, fourfold causality, form and
matter, hylomorphic anthropology, the structure of intellection,
the relationship between knowledge and will, happiness and
friendship, habits and virtues, contemplation and action, politics
and justice, the best form of government, and private property and
the common good. The ten essays in this book engage Aquinas's
reception of Aristotle in his theology from a variety of points of
view: historical, philosophical, and constructively theological.
Nothing was more important to Wordsworth than tracing the evidence
that affinities had been preserved between all the stages of the
life of man. In this beautifully written and thoughtful book
Wordsworth's biographer and editor Stephen Gill explores the ways
in which the poet attempted as an artist to maintain such
continuities and shows how revisitings of various kinds are at the
heart of his creativity. Habitually reviewing all of his work, both
published and that still in manuscript, Wordsworth painstakingly
revised at the level of verbal detail or recast it more largely.
New poems frequently emerged from re-engagement with old, often
serving as a sequel to or commentary from the maturer poet on his
own earlier creation, and acts of self-borrowing and self-reference
are plentiful. These linkings provide insights into the powerful
vision the poet maintained that his imaginative creation was one
evolving unity and reveal much about the obsessions and drives of
the great poet. Combining textual analysis, critical commentary,
and biographical narrative, Gill explores what binds Wordsworth's
later, less well-known poems to his earlier work. At the centre of
the book is an account of the evolution of The Prelude from 1804 to
1839, in which it is argued that Wordsworth's masterpiece must be
followed through all its versions, seen as a poem growing old
alongside its creator.

The Wordsworth volume in the 21st-Century Oxford Authors series is
the most comprehensive selection currently available of the poetry
and prose of one of the finest poets in the English language. The
familiar poems from Wordsworth's 'Great Decade' are all included,
but they are complemented by a more than usually generous selection
of the best poems from his later years. The extracts from the Guide
to the Lakes will be a revelation to many readers, as will the
political prose of the Convention of Cintra. All of the material is
presented in chronological sequence, so that the reader can see how
Wordsworth's changing concerns were expressed in prose as well as
poetry. Work which Wordsworth published is separated from that
which he did not reveal, which will enable the reader to trace
through successive published volumes the development of
Wordsworth's public poetic self, while also being able to follow
the growth of the body of poetry which, for whatever reason,
Wordsworth did not choose to make public when it was written - The
Prelude being the greatest and most obvious example.

In one way or another we are all waiting. Even
those who seem to have it all are still waiting on
something. There may be a young athlete who’s
waiting for his wildest dreams to come true.
There may be a young lady waiting on an acceptance letter
to a university. A married couple may be waiting to
find out if they’re giving birth to a boy or a girl.
There may be an individual waiting for lab results
from his most recent doctor’s visit. We are all in the
same boat. Waiting. Waiting for change. Waiting for
answers. Waiting for healing. Waiting for things to
get better. No matter how good life gets, every
living human being will always be in need of
something.
