This book describes the multidisciplinary approach needed to tackle
better aging. Aging populations are one of the 21st century's
biggest challenges. National health systems are forced to adapt in
order to provide adequate and affordable care. Innovation, driven
by digital technology, is a key to improving quality of life and
encouraging healthy living. Well-designed technology keeps people
empowered, independent, and mobile; however, despite widespread
adoption of ICT in day-to-day life, digital health technologies
have yet to catch on. To this end, technology needs to be
effective, usable, cheap, and designed to ensure the security of
the managed data. In the era of mHealth, mobile technology, and
social design, this book describes, in six sections, the
collaboration of polytechnic know-how and social science and health
sectors in the creation of a system for encouraging people to
engage in healthy behavior and achieve a better quality of life.
This book describes current trends in m_Health technology, systems,
and applications. The book proposes a multifaceted view on m-Health
opportunities and requirements starting from four aspects: patient,
technology, design and innovation. The analysis is completed by a
market segmentation overview and by the most recent research
experiences to offer a complete benchmark and vision of m_Health
for today and tomorrow. The contributions are based on the outcomes
of initiatives on the future of healthcare, funded by the EU in the
frame of FP7 and Horizon 2020 and their deployment into real
clinical practice. Throughout the book, clinicians, technicians,
researchers, and end-users debate their experience, needs, risks,
opportunities, and available solutions in this fast moving field.

During the past two decades incredible progress has been achieved
in the instruments and devices used in the biomedical field. This
progress stems from continuous scientific research that has taken
advantage of many findings and advances in technology made
available by universities and industry. Innovation is the key word
and in this context legal protection and intellectual property
rights (IPR) are of crucial importance. This book provides students
and practitioners with the fundamentals for designing biomedical
devices and explains basic design principles. Furthermore, as an
aid to the development of devices and products for healthcare, it
presents a brief description of the human body, covering anatomy
and physiology, that will assist the reader in understanding the
origin of biosignals, their significance and the technology to be
used in their measurement. Issues concerning IPR and protections
are also fully discussed, with examples and opportunities for IPR
exploitation.
