The Image of Islam in Russia: Greg Simons The Image of Islam in Russia
Greg Simons
R1,299 Discovery Miles 12 990 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

This book covers the developing and important issue of the role and place of Islam in the increasingly complex dynamics of Russian politics. It is achieved by examining various aspects of Islam and Muslims in Russia from a multidisciplinary perspective. Islam and Muslims are currently at the forefront of popular culture, mass media and political imaginations in the age of the ‘Global War on Terrorism’. Frequently, these are for the ‘wrong’ reasons as they are not well understood, but rather stereotypically misrepresented, often for various political reasons. Russia is also highly stereotyped; the diverse and mysterious country is often misunderstood in terms of the communicated cultural, social and political images. This book is an attempt to expose and analyse the wealth in diversity of Islam and Muslims in Russia, a country where different religions have occupied the same political spaces, for better and worse, for many centuries. The content of this book is focused upon the contemporary social, political, cultural and identity contexts of Russia in terms of the interrelated dynamics and forces that are shaping the relations and place of Islam and Muslims in Russia today. The chapters in this book were originally published in the journal Religion, State & Society.

The Politics of Security Sector Reform - Challenges and Opportunities for the European Union's Global Role (Paperback):... The Politics of Security Sector Reform - Challenges and Opportunities for the European Union's Global Role (Paperback)
Magnus Ekengren; Edited by Greg Simons
R1,697 Discovery Miles 16 970 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

Security Sector Reform (SSR) is increasingly becoming a cornerstone in international security and development cooperation. Indeed, the concept has often been seen as a panacea for many of the biggest threats to the world such as failed states, terrorism and poverty. In particular, this book focuses on the complexities of implementation of SSR across the globe and the actual and potential role for the European Union (EU) to play in SSR. As suggested in the title of the book, this involves not only opportunities, but challenges to be overcome as well. There are three core themes to this book: Policy, Policies and Practice. By presenting the themes in this particular order a greater appreciation of the influences on the process of SSR, from conception to implementation is relayed to the reader. This volume appeals to audiences interested in the EU as a global actor and the interrelationships between foreign, security, defence and development policies.

Religion, Politics and Nation-Building in Post-Communist Countries (Hardcover, New Ed): Greg Simons, David Westerlund Religion, Politics and Nation-Building in Post-Communist Countries (Hardcover, New Ed)
Greg Simons, David Westerlund
R4,216 Discovery Miles 42 160 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

The increasing significance and visibility of relationships between religion and public arenas and institutions following the fall of communism in Europe provide the core focus of this fascinating book. Leading international scholars consider the religious and political role of Christian Orthodoxy in the Russian Federation, Romania, Georgia and Ukraine alongside the revival of old, indigenous religions, often referred to as 'shamanistic' and look at how, despite Islam's long history and many adherents in the south, Islamophobic attitudes have increasingly been added to traditional anti-Semitic, anti-Western or anti-liberal elements of Russian nationalism. Contrasts between the church's position in the post-communist nation building process of secular Estonia with its role in predominantly Catholic Poland are also explored. Religion, Politics and Nation-Building in Post-Communist Countries gives a broad overview of the political importance of religion in the Post-Soviet space but its interest and relevance extends far beyond the geographical focus, providing examples of the challenges in the spheres of public, religious and social policy for all transitional countries.

Mass Media and Modern Warfare - Reporting on the Russian War on Terrorism (Hardcover, New Ed): Greg Simons Mass Media and Modern Warfare - Reporting on the Russian War on Terrorism (Hardcover, New Ed)
Greg Simons
R4,213 Discovery Miles 42 130 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

Mass media are essential to democratic society; in contrast, the War on Terror has been interpreted as an assault on democracy and freedom by Islamic fundamentalists. The building and maintenance of public support is essential in modern warfare due to the increasing politicization of warfare, where losses and gains are measured in political rather than military terms. And if progress cannot be demonstrated during a war, then by default one is assumed to be losing. Greg Simons tackles the complicated yet essential role of mass media in society. Taking the Global War on Terror as a prime example, the author adopts a multidisciplinary approach to analyze the various facets of war and the role of the media within it. Assessing in particular the Russian fight against terrorism, this book provides a broader perspective and understanding of contemporary struggles.

Poet in New York (Paperback, New Ed): Federico Garcia Lorca Poet in New York (Paperback, New Ed)
Federico Garcia Lorca; Edited by Christopher Maurer; Introduction by Christopher Maurer; Translated by Greg Simon, Steven F. White
R368 R333 Discovery Miles 3 330 Save R35 (10%) Ships in 9 - 17 working days

'There has been no more terribly acute critic of America than this steel-conscious and death-conscious Spaniard, with his curious passion for the modernities of nickel and tinfoil and nitre . . .' So wrote Conrad Aiken of Lorca's violent response to the New York he encountered as a student at Columbia University in 1929 and 1930. Born and brought up in Andalusia, Lorca's reaction to the brutality and loneliness of the vast city was one of amazement and indignation. His poetry moved away from the lyricism of the early Romanceros and became a vehicle for experimental techniques through which he expressed tortured feelings of alienation and dislocation. Based on a new edition of the original text, Greg Simon's and Steven White's new translation brings to life Lorca's arresting imagery. Christopher Maurer, a leading authority on Lorca's work, provides an enlightening introduction placing Poet in New York in context, and there are translations of Lorca's letters as well as a lecture he gave about the work. Illustrated with archive photographs, this comprehensive volume will make Lorca's masterpiece available to a whole new generation of readers.

The Angel of Rain (Paperback): Stephen F. White, Greg Simon The Angel of Rain (Paperback)
Stephen F. White, Greg Simon; Gaston Baquero
Sold By Aristata Bookshop - Fulfilled by Loot
R248 Discovery Miles 2 480 Ships in 2 - 4 working days

The work of Cuban poet Gaston Baquero has been largely unavailable. Now, thanks to translators Greg Simon and Steven White, we have a rich sampling that will provide English speakers a powerful display of Baquero's high-velocity lyricism. Playful, sinuous with both gladness and duende, these poems speak profoundly of the spirit's essential freedom and mystery, and of what it meant to be human in the twentieth century. Born in Banes, Cuba, in 1918, Gaston Baquero was raised in rural poverty and trained as an agronomist before becoming a journalist. He was involved in all the most important Cuban literary journals of the mid-century, including Origenes. He left Cuba immediately after the revolution of 1959, spending the rest of his life in Spain, where he died in 1997. Baquero published numerous essays and eight collections of poetry. Although officially nonexistent in Cuba for many years, his work is widely known there, and he was recently officially acknowledged as one of the country's major poets.
