Typological Studies - Word Order and Relative Clauses (Paperback): Guglielmo Cinque Typological Studies - Word Order and Relative Clauses (Paperback)
Guglielmo Cinque
R1,627 Discovery Miles 16 270 Ships in 12 - 19 working days

In this book, Cinque takes a generative perspective on typological questions relating to word order and to the syntax of relative clauses. In particular, Cinque looks at: the position of the Head vis a vis the relative clause in relation to the position of the verb vis a vis his object; a general cross-linguistic analysis of correlatives; the need to distinguish a sentence-grammar, from a discourse-grammar, type of non-restrictives (with languages differing as to whether they possess both, one, the other, or neither); a selective type of extraction from relative clauses; and a tentative sketch of a more ample work in progress on a unified analysis of externally headed, internally headed, and headless relative clauses.

The Syntax of Relative Clauses - A Unified Analysis (Hardcover): Guglielmo Cinque The Syntax of Relative Clauses - A Unified Analysis (Hardcover)
Guglielmo Cinque
R2,983 Discovery Miles 29 830 Ships in 12 - 19 working days

Relative clauses play a hugely important role in analysing the structure of sentences. This book provides the first evidence that a unified analysis of the different types of relative clauses is possible - a step forward in our understanding. Using careful analyses of a wide range of languages, Cinque argues that the relative clause types can all be derived from a single, double-headed, structure. He also presents evidence that restrictive, maximalizing, ('integrated') non-restrictive, kind-defining, infinitival and participial RCs merge at different heights of the nominal extended projection. This book provides an elegant generalization about the structure of all relatives. Theoretically profound and empirically rich, it promises to radically alter the way we think about this subject for years to come.

Mapping Spatial PPs - The Cartography of Syntactic Structures, Volume 6 (Paperback, New): Guglielmo Cinque, Luigi Rizzi Mapping Spatial PPs - The Cartography of Syntactic Structures, Volume 6 (Paperback, New)
Guglielmo Cinque, Luigi Rizzi
R1,795 Discovery Miles 17 950 Ships in 12 - 19 working days

Mapping Spatial PPs focuses on a particular aspect of the internal syntax of prepositional phrases that has been relatively neglected in previous studies: the fine-grained articulation of their structure. With contributions from top scholars in the field, this volume investigates such components as direction, location, axial part, deictic center, absolute (ambiental) and relative view point, using evidence from Romance, Germanic, and African languages, with references to other language families. Mapping Spatial PPs demonstrates that the internal structure of prepositional phrases is richer than previously recognized.

Guglielmo Cinque
R4,654 Discovery Miles 46 540 Ships in 12 - 19 working days

In this new book, well-known linguist Guglielmo Cinque takes a generative perspective on typological questions relating to word order and to the syntax of relative clauses. The articles gathered in the first part of the present volume deal with word order, while the second address relative clauses. In particular, Cinque looks at: the position of the Head vis vis the relative clause in relation to the position of the verb vis vis his object; a general cross-linguistic analysis of correlatives; the need to distinguish a sentence-grammar, from a discourse-grammar, type of non-restrictives (with languages differing as to whether they possess both, one, the other, or neither); a selective type of extraction from relative clauses; and a tentative sketch of a more ample work in progress on a unified analysis of externally headed, internally headed, and headless relative clauses.

The Oxford Handbook of Comparative Syntax (Paperback): Guglielmo Cinque, Richard S. Kayne The Oxford Handbook of Comparative Syntax (Paperback)
Guglielmo Cinque, Richard S. Kayne
R1,956 Discovery Miles 19 560 Ships in 12 - 19 working days

Comparison across formal languages is an essential part of formal linguistics. The study of closely-related varieties has proven extremely useful in comparing differences that might otherwise appear unrealted, and has helped to identify the core principles of Universal Grammar. This comprehensive handbook serves two functions. It will provide a general and theoretical introduction to comparative syntax, its methodology, and its relation to other domains of linguistic inquiry; and it will provide a systematic selection of the best comparative work being done today on those language groups and families where substantial progress has been achieved. With top-notch editors and contributors from around the world, this volume will be an essential resource for scholars and students in formal linguistics.

Restructuring and Functional Heads - The Cartography of Syntactic Structures Volume 4 (Paperback): Guglielmo Cinque Restructuring and Functional Heads - The Cartography of Syntactic Structures Volume 4 (Paperback)
Guglielmo Cinque
R2,061 Discovery Miles 20 610 Ships in 12 - 19 working days

This volume collects the recent published articles of Guglielmo Cinque of the University of Venice, one of the world's top linguists. The book is divided into two sections, the first on restructuring, a central topic in Romance syntax and with connections to other language groups as well. The second part focuses on the consequences of treating clausal functional heads as members of a universal hierarchy in the domain of morphpsyntax, offering a new perspective on many intricate problems arising in a variety of natural languages.

Italian Syntax and Universal Grammar (Paperback, Revised): Guglielmo Cinque Italian Syntax and Universal Grammar (Paperback, Revised)
Guglielmo Cinque
R1,414 Discovery Miles 14 140 Ships in 12 - 19 working days

Guglielmo Cinque is one of the world's leading theoretical syntacticians, and is particularly known for his application of recent theory to the analysis of Italian. This volume brings together ten of Professor Cinque's essays, some of which are published here for the first time, and some of which have not hitherto been easily available. They explore a wide range of aspects of Italian syntax, including the grammar of relative and 'pseudo-relative' clauses in the complement of perception verbs, impersonal si constructions, and the position and argument structure of adjectives in the noun phrase. The volume considers the implications of Cinque's work on Italian syntax for generative grammar more broadly, and compares Italian with the syntax of other Romance and also Germanic languages. It will be welcomed by all those working on Italian syntax, and on theoretical syntax generally.

Functional Structure in DP and IP - The Cartography of Syntactic Structures Volume 1 (Paperback): Guglielmo Cinque Functional Structure in DP and IP - The Cartography of Syntactic Structures Volume 1 (Paperback)
Guglielmo Cinque
R3,637 Discovery Miles 36 370 Ships in 12 - 19 working days

In this volume, Guglielmo Cinque, one of the worlds leading theoretical syntacticians, presents the first results of a long term research project funded by the Italian Government. With a panel of distinguished linguists, Cinque attempts to develop a comprehensive mapping of various functional structures in natural structures in natural languages. This major collective research project in generative grammar is a valuable contribution to the field, providing a systematic and empirical look at the various functional heads found in the sentence and in other phrases in a variety of world languages. this is the first of several potential volumes within the comparative syntax series that will publish the results of this project. It should be of substantial interest to all linguists and students of formal syntax, and is likely to become an important sourcebook for future research.

Adverbs and Functional Heads - A Cross-Linguistic Perspective (Paperback): Guglielmo Cinque Adverbs and Functional Heads - A Cross-Linguistic Perspective (Paperback)
Guglielmo Cinque
R2,935 Discovery Miles 29 350 Ships in 12 - 19 working days

Cinque presents evidence for locating Adverb Phrases in the specifiers of distinct functional projections, in a more articulated theory of the clause. In this theory, both adverbs and the heads, which encode the functional notions of the clause, are ordered in a rigid sequence. The two sequences appear to match systematically, as would follow if the adverbs were the specifiers of the of the phrases projected by the corresponding heads.

R1,236 Discovery Miles 12 360 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

In The Syntax of Adjectives, Guglielmo Cinque offers cross-linguistic evidence that adjectives have two sources. Arguing against the standard view, and reconsidering his own earlier analysis, Cinque proposes that adjectives enter the nominal phase either as "adverbial" modifiers to the noun or as predicates of reduced relative clauses. Some of his evidence comes from a systematic comparison between Romance and Germanic languages. These two language families differ with respect to the canonical position taken by adjectives, which is prenominal in Germanic and both pre- and postnominal in Romance. Cinque shows that a simple N(oun)-raising analysis encounters a number of problems, the primary one of which is its inability to express a fundamental generalization governing the interpretation of pre- and postnominal adjectives in the two language families. Cinque argues that N-raising as such should be abandoned in favor of XP-raising--a conclusion also supported by evidence from other language families. After developing this framework for analyzing the syntax of adjectives, Cinque applies it to the syntax of English and Italian adjectives. An appendix offers a brief discussion of other languages that appear to distinguish overtly between the two sources of adjectives.
