Loneliness in Later Life concerns the personal and social changes associated with aging, a topic that is becoming increasingly popular with both professionals and those in the Third Age themselves. The nature of loneliness is analyzed and clearly distinguished from solitary living, which need not be an unpleasant state. Through an examination of material drawn from literature and modern research, including the author's own experience, the book arrives at the happy conclusion that older people are not, in general, lonelier than when they were younger.
This book introduces recently developed mixed finite element
methods for large-scale geophysical flows that preserve essential
numerical properties for accurate simulations. The methods are
presented using standard models of atmospheric flows and are
implemented using the Firedrake finite element library. Examples
guide the reader through problem formulation, discretisation, and
automated implementation. The so-called "compatible" finite element
methods possess key numerical properties which are crucial for
real-world operational weather and climate prediction. The authors
summarise the theory and practical implications of these methods
for model problems, introducing the reader to the Firedrake package
and providing open-source implementations for all the examples
covered. Students and researchers with engineering, physics,
mathematics, or computer science backgrounds will benefit from this
book. Those readers who are less familiar with the topic are
provided with an overview of geophysical fluid dynamics.
The transformation from a closed and inward-looking economy to an
active integration into the European Union is one which a number of
countries are facing. This book examines the experience of southern
European countries where such transformation has occurred within a
short space of time and has been accompanied by important
socio-political developments including the consolidation of
democracy. The various contributors focus on the motivation for
economic change, the problems encountered and the lessons to be
learnt.
Loneliness in Later Life concerns the personal and social changes
associated with ageing, a topic which is becoming increasingly
popular as the number of those in the Third Age themselves reaches
unprecedented levels. It analyses the nature of loneliness, clearly
distinguishing it from the experience of solitary living, which in
its turn is explored, and valued. Through an examination of
material drawn from literature and moderen research, including the
author's own experience, the book arrives at the happy conclusion
that older people are not in general, lonelier than when younger.
Sales of locally produced foods comprise a small, but growing, part
of U.S. agricultural sales. The U.S. Department of
Agriculture(USDA) estimates that farm-level value of local food
sales totalled about $4.8 million in 2008, about 1.6% of the U.S.
market for agricultural products. An estimated total of 107,000
farms were engaged in local food systems, about 5% of all U.S.
farms. This book provides background on local and regional food
systems, focusing on available data on direct-to-consumer sales,
farmers' markets, farm-to-school programs, community-supported
agriculture, and community gardens. Also discussed are the
available resources within existing federal programs administered
by USDA and other agencies that may be applied to support local
food systems as well as the legislative options and proposals that
will be part of the next farm bill debate.
The relationship between humans and domestic animals has changed in
dramatic ways over the ages, and those transitions have had
profound consequences for all parties involved. As societies
evolve, the selective pressures that shape domestic populations
also change. Some animals retain close relationships with humans,
but many do not. Those who establish residency in the wild, free
from direct human control, are technically neither domestic nor
wild: they are feral. If we really want to understand humanity's
complex relationship with domestic animals, then we cannot simply
ignore the ones who went feral. This is especially true in the
American South, where social and cultural norms have facilitated
and sustained large populations of feral animals for hundreds of
years. Feral Animals in the American South retells southern history
from this new perspective of feral animals.
Building Meaning in Context: A Dynamic Approach to Bantu Clause
Structure uses the tools of the Dynamic Syntax framework to explore
morphosyntactic phenomena in a number of Bantu languages. Examines
word order alternations, inversion constructions and negation in
Bantu, showing the incremental nature of the build-up of meaning in
context Highlights cross-linguistic parallels, drawing on data from
Japanese, Korean, Romance languages and varieties of Greek Offers a
radical new perspective on the nature of human language, showing
the centrality of the concepts of underspecification and update
which lie at the heart of the DS structure building process An
innovative analysis with a broad empirical coverage
