One of the major driving forces behind the international Women's University was the interest in changing the traditional university. In its pursuit of this goal, the projekt vifu (the Virtual International University) combined the overall focus on gender with a conceptual stress on virtuality as a potential inroad to transform and innovate the established academic system. This collection presents results and critical evaluations of the vifu as a feminist project designed in flavor of change. In addition to this, the volume presents and discusses projects which theoretically and practically integrate the new ICTs into their departure to new horizons in higher education and research and at the same practice a particular sensitivity towards gender as a social category. The authors of this anthology share the perspective on the category of gender and ICT-related developments summed up by "virtuality" as potential tools for transforming traditional academia. While change is not considered as a quality per se, each contribution makes its case for specific kinds of "making new". In doing so, they also seek answers to the questions of a democratic and socially responsible knowledge production and distribution in the 21 st century.

How can information technology (IT) paradigms and design processes be studied from a gender perspective? What does IT design look like when its construction is informed by gender research? Though gender research and computing science seem like two separate worlds, this book proves how inspirational a confrontation and combination of those worlds can be. A deconstructive analysis of advanced fields of computing shows the multiple ways in which software design is gendered and how gendering effects are produced by its use. Concepts and assumptions underlying research and development, along with design tools and IT products, teaching methods and materials are studied. The book not only offers a gender analysis of information society technologies, it also shows practical examples of how IT can be different. A gender perspective on IT design can serve as an eye-opener for what tends to be overlooked and left out. It yields innovative ideas and high quality software systems that may empower a large diversity of users for an active participation in our information society.

Zum erstenmal in der Bundesrepublik laden Informatikerinnen Frauen und Manner aus den verschiedensten Fachdisziplinen ein, wissenschaftliche Untersuchungen und Erfahrungen zum Thema "Frauen und Computer" vorzustellen und auf einer Fachtagung gemeinsam zu diskutieren. Die Themen umfassen Frauenerwerbsarbeit, den Einfluss der Computertechnik auf Frauenarbeitsplatze in Produktion und Verwaltung und die Gefahren dieser Entwicklung. Behandelt wird auch die Frage, wie Arbeitsplatze und Hard- und Software im Interesse erwerbstatiger Frauen gestaltet werden konnen. Im Themenschwerpunkt "Schulische und berufliche Weiterbildung" werden neue Wege in der Technikausbildung diskutiert. In einem weiteren Schwerpunkt geht es um Fachfrauen im Bereich der Datenverarbeitung, ihre Entwicklungsmoglichkeiten in einer Mannerdomane und um den internationalen Vergleich. Traditionelle kulturelle Leitbilder, nach denen Technik und Weiblichkeit sich ausschliessen, werden der Kritik unterzogen. Erste Uberlegungen gibt es zu der Frage, ob und wie sich der Ausschluss weiblicher Lebensrealitat in Theorie und Entwicklung der Informatik niederschlagt. Insbesondere auf dem Gebiet des Software-Engineering entwickeln Informatikerinnen heute ihre Kritik und suchen nach eigenen Wegen. Insgesamt gibt der Tagungsband einen breiten Uberblick uber die gegenwartige Forschung, Diskussion und praktische Erfahrung auf dem Gebiet Frauen und Computer.
