Published in 1992, the aim of this book is to give both the professional planner and the student a feel for the current arguments alive in planning policy circles and to introduce relevant contemporary research. This book has developed out of a series of seminars run at the Institute of Planning Studies at Nottingham University as part of its continuing professional development programme. Each of the seminars brought together a variety of speakers who were involved with the topic under discussion from a different aspect - some with academic research experience and others with practical policy implementation. Most the nineteen contributors presented papers at this series of seminars, but some have been rewritten, others substantially revised, and several have been commissioned especially for this book. Four current policy issues are examined: provision and pedestrians; jobs for the inner cities; the homeless and the relationship between planners and developers. For each topic contributors were chosen who could approach the problem from a different point of view, the aim being to explore each topic with direct statements and straightforward arguments leading therefore to a more stimulating breadth of this view rather than a bland overview.

Nine essays delve into the diverse analytical aspects of the two concepts, and an introduction and conclusion by the editors, respectively, forge a synthesis of their theoretical coherence. Hegemony has long existed as a term in political science, international relations, and social theory, but its meaning varies across these fields. While each has developed its own 'local' language games for treating the idea, they all conceptualize hegemony as a form of power. Building on the recent rigorous exposition of power, this book subjects hegemony to a clarifying debate. In doing so, it advances the power debate. Components of the literature assume a relationship between power and hegemony, but no previous work has performed a concentrated and consistent analytical examination of them until now.

This title was first published in 2000: The contents of this text are structured by three sub-themes. Firstly, the internationalization of Europe. This field studies threats and chances of re-institutionalization of nation-state societies and the role of the public sector therein, acknowledging the dynamics of the ever-changing international political and economic relations. The second sub-theme is the creative firm in a European context. The object of this field is the conditions for innovative organization and management of firms in Europe, taking into account the necessary adjustments to emerging European political and economic transformations. The final sub-theme is innovative environmental and spacial policy in a European context. This section has its object in the far-reaching transformations that European societies and particularly the Dutch societies are witnessing. These transformations concern the functional relations and spatial and environmental conditions as well as the emerging changes in the way planning and policy institutions deal with their new targets.
