Food safety concerns have boosted the Asian demand for quality food
in general and products of geographical indications in particular.
This book shows how Asian countries are empowering regions and
enterprises involved in differentiation strategies, and the effects
that this regulation can have.
The British Rail corporate image and its Rail Blue livery was one
of the longest-lived colour schemes carried by the trains of
Britain in the forty-eight-year life of the nationalised railway
network. Launched in 1965, after Beeching, the then new corporate
image was an attempt by the BR design panel to raise the profile of
the railway system countrywide and to sweep away the dull steam-era
image as the swinging sixties got underway. By the mid-1970s,
virtually all BR locomotives and multiple units were carrying Rail
Blue livery, while most of the passenger coaches were in matching
blue/grey. As the British Rail network was sectorised from the late
1980s in preparation for eventual privatisation, new bold, bright
livery schemes for the fleet swept away the familiar, but by then
somewhat jaded BR image. The BR blue era is now looked upon with
affection as a golden age when the system was operated by an
immense variety of locomotives and rolling stock, all now part of
history in the same way that the steam era was viewed when the BR
blue era ruled on Britain's railways.
A translation of Hilberts "Theorie der algebraischen Zahlk rper"
best known as the "Zahlbericht," first published in 1897, in which
he provides an elegantly integrated overview of the development of
algebraic number theory up to the end of the nineteenth century.
The Zahlbericht also provided a firm foundation for further
research in the theory, and can be seen as the starting point for
all twentieth century investigations into the subject, as well as
reciprocity laws and class field theory. This English edition
further contains an introduction by F. Lemmermeyer and N.
Schappacher.
Cryopreserved allograft tissues are now standard materials for
the reconstructive cardiac surgeon. Since publication of the first
edition ("Cardiac Reconstructions with Allograft Valves") in 1989,
the field has progressed dramatically with increased clinical use
of cardiovascular allograft tissues, with the development of new
surgical techniques, and with advances in the understanding of the
fundamentals of valve transplantation biology and cryopreservation.
As a result, over two-thirds of the present volume represents new
material. Fifty-six authors bring their expertise to thirteen
comprehensive, lavishly illustrated sections which discuss the
principles of the use of homograft valves, major clinical series of
homograft valves for both left and right ventricular outflow
tracts, cryopreserved allograft tissue for cardiac reconstruction,
cell biology of heart valve leaflets, cryobiology of heart valve
preservation, morphological, biochemical, and explant pathology
studies of allograft heart valves, allograft valve banking, as well
as detailed explanation of surgical techniques for valve and root
methods for left and right ventricular outflow tract
reconstructions, the Ross operation and variants, and complex
reconstructions. A final section presents potential future
directions for the field. Over 400 illustrations, created expressly
for this book, depict the surgical techniques from the perspective
of the surgeon standing at the operating table. All surgeons
performing pediatric and/or adult valve replacements and
reconstructive cardiac surgeries will benefit from the described
methods. Cardiothoracic residents and cardiologists will also find
the text useful. It will provide the surgeon with an enhanced
understanding of the biological and material properties of
allografts and increased familiarity with the range of surgical
techniques applicable for the use of these valves, particularly in
the successful management of challenging cardiac
reconstructions.>
The VIth World Symposium on Cardiac Pacing in Montreal 1979 opened
with a course, meant to be an introduction for newcomers and an
updating re fresher and link between the various fields of
knowledge needed by experienced persons for cardiac pacing. Invited
guest lecturers were selected for their world recognized expertise
in the individual subjects. This book is a collection of the
various presentations on historical, clinical, electrophysiological
and technical aspects of cardiac pacing. Together they cover the
fundamentals of cardiac stimulation. We hope that this book may
become an introductory guide to the field of cardiac pacing and
that it may contribute to a better understanding of the pacemaker
system and a better treatment of the pacemaker patient. Claude C.

This collection features five peer-reviewed reviews on improving
biosecurity in livestock production. The first chapter highlights
the importance of implementing biosecurity measures along the pig
production chain as a means of minimising disease introduction
(external biosecurity) and spread (internal biosecurity) throughout
the farm. The second chapter reviews the diagnosis and monitoring
of common pig diseases, as well as the control measures that can be
implemented on the farm, focussing on the importance of
establishing effective biosecurity measures. The third chapter
provides a brief overview of the emergence and re-emergence of
several infectious pathogens of poultry. The chapter highlights the
integral role of improving biosecurity in poultry flocks as a means
of mitigating future disease risk, including proper cleaning and
disinfection techniques. The fourth chapter provides an overview of
good farming practices for beef cattle farms, with particular
discussion of biosecurity, animal welfare and the importance of
clean cattle policies. The final chapter summarises key issues of
biosecurity which arise in organic animal farming and discusses
their significance to human health. Two case studies are presented
to demonstrate the successful implementation of biosecurity plans
as a means of reducing disease risk.
An Industry Perspective on Key Tunable Technologies and
Applications Tunable RF Components and Circuits: Applications in
Mobile Handsets provides a technical introduction to the state of
the art in tunable radio frequency (RF) components, circuits, and
applications and discusses the foundational work that has been done
to date. Leading practitioners in the field share their expertise
on tunable devices in mobile handset applications. Through these
practical viewpoints, readers discover how to use tunable RF
techniques and devices to develop successful product designs. A
substantial portion of the book focuses on antennas and antenna
tuning, reflecting the dominance of the antenna tuning application
in today's commercial market for tunable RF. The book explains how
RF-microelectromechanical systems (RF-MEMS), barium strontium
titinate (BST), silicon-on-insulator (SOI) field effect transistors
(FETs), and high-performance complementary metal oxide
semiconductors (CMOS) are used as enabling technologies for tunable
functions in current and next-generation radio architectures. The
book also describes power amplifier envelope tracking, an emerging
and important technique for improving efficiency; presents a
network operator's perspective on the evolution of the handset
front end; and explores emerging approaches to production testing
of wireless devices.
This remarkable book has endured as a true masterpiece of
mathematical exposition. There are few mathematics books that are
still so widely read and continue to have so much to offer-even
after more than half a century has passed! The book is overflowing
with mathematical ideas, which are always explained clearly and
elegantly, and above all, with penetrating insight. It is a joy to
read, both for beginners and experienced mathematicians. "Hilbert
and Cohn-Vossen" is full of interesting facts, many of which you
wish you had known before. It's also likely that you have heard
those facts before, but surely wondered where they could be found.
The book begins with examples of the simplest curves and surfaces,
including thread constructions of certain quadrics and other
surfaces. The chapter on regular systems of points leads to the
crystallographic groups and the regular polyhedra in R3. In this
chapter, they also discuss plane lattices. By considering unit
lattices, and throwing in a small amount of number theory when
necessary, they effortlessly derive Leibniz's series:
?/4=1?1/3+1/5?1/7+?.... In the section on lattices in three and
more dimensions, the authors consider sphere-packing problems,
including the famous Kepler problem. One of the most remarkable
chapters is "Projective Configurations". In a short introductory
section, Hilbert and Cohn-Vossen give perhaps the most concise and
lucid description of why a general geometer would care about
projective geometry and why such an ostensibly plain setup is truly
rich in structure and ideas. Here, we see regular polyhedra again,
from a different perspective. One of the high points of the chapter
is the discussion of Schlafli's Double-Six, which leads to the
description of the 27 lines on the general smooth cubic surface. As
is true throughout the book, the magnificent drawings in this
chapter immeasurably help the reader. A particularly intriguing
section in the chapter on differential geometry is Eleven
Properties of the Sphere. Which eleven properties of such a
ubiquitous mathematical object caught their discerning eye and why?
Many mathematicians are familiar with the plaster models of
surfaces found in many mathematics departments. The book includes
pictures of some of the models that are found in the Goettingen
collection. Furthermore, the mysterious lines that mark these
surfaces are finally explained! The chapter on kinematics includes
a nice discussion of linkages and the geometry of configurations of
points and rods that are connected and, perhaps, constrained in
some way. This topic in geometry has become increasingly important
in recent times, especially in applications to robotics. This is
another example of a simple situation that leads to a rich
geometry. It would be hard to overestimate the continuing influence
Hilbert-Cohn-Vossen's book has had on mathematicians of this
century. It surely belongs in the "pantheon" of great mathematics
books.

Greater Manchester covers an area of 493 square miles and is a
diverse part of North West England, it is home to 2.8 million
people. At its heart is the vibrant and ever-changing City of
Manchester, the large conurbation having borders with Lancashire,
West Yorkshire, Derbyshire, Cheshire and Merseyside. It has a
complex, varied and historic heavy rail network that contains
ninety-six stations on a 142 mile network, part of which was the
first passenger railway in the World. Greater Manchester is also
home to the largest light rail system in the UK - The Metrolink
Tram system has a current network of 57 miles and 93 stops, its
expansion has aided some traffic reduction in an area that has the
highest percentage of Motorway network than any other county in the
UK. Network Greater Manchester is a detailed photographic journey
over the system that chronicles the constantly changing scene since
the late 1970's to the present day and illustrates how the
services, rolling stock and infrastructure have changed with the
passage of time.
The Civil War affected the entire American landscape in ways not
always given their due consideration. Not only did it determine the
political future of a nation, it influenced the scientific and
cultural development of the country as well. The war cost America
many of its best and brightest in every venue. James A. Leonard was
one such loss: a brilliant up-and-coming chess player in 1861-62
before he made the decision to serve his country during wartime.
Born November 6, 1841, James A. Leonard was the son of a poor Irish
immigrant - but even a poor child could play the game of kings.
Leonard grew up in a time when interest in chess was experiencing a
revival, and contemporaries such as Paul Morphy, Eugene Delmar and
Leonard's mentor Philip Richardson captured the interest of a
country. Leonard defeated a number of the country's notable chess
players and was widely viewed as the ""New Morphy."" This biography
discusses what little is known of Leonard's life and death but
concentrates primarily on Leonard's ability and his sadly shortened
career. Game scores and diagrams from 96 of Leonard's games are
included, with detailed descriptions regarding place, date and
opponents.
