Transformative Climate Governance - A Capacities Perspective to Systematise, Evaluate and Guide Climate Action (Hardcover, 1st... Transformative Climate Governance - A Capacities Perspective to Systematise, Evaluate and Guide Climate Action (Hardcover, 1st ed. 2020)
Katharina Hoelscher, Niki Frantzeskaki
R2,993 Discovery Miles 29 930 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

How to progress climate science to be policy-relevant and actionable? This book presents a novel framework to give a positive vision and structuring approach to guide research and practice on transformative climate governance, to shift the narrative from apathy and stalemate to action and transformation. Our vision contrasts existing climate governance and associated lock-ins that signify the institutional resistance to change. To effectively address climate change, climate governance itself needs to be transformed to foster sustainability transitions under climate change. The book brings together a collection of case studies to investigate how capacities for transformative climate governance are developing at multiple scales and how they can be strengthened vis-a-vis existing governance regimes. Specifically, it sheds light on the following questions: What are key overarching conditions, actors and activities that facilitate governance for transformation under climate change? Given persistent climate governance lock-ins, what needs to happen in research and policy to build-up the capacities that transform climate governance and ensure effective climate action?

The Successes and Failures of Economic Transition - The European Experience (Hardcover, 2006 ed.): H. Gabrisch, J. Hoelscher The Successes and Failures of Economic Transition - The European Experience (Hardcover, 2006 ed.)
H. Gabrisch, J. Hoelscher
R2,860 Discovery Miles 28 600 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

This book assumes transformation of former socialist countries of Europe to a market economy to be a political concept, having a start and an end. Transformation is analyzed from the perspective of the end (EU membership), and not of the inherited burdens from the socialist system. Additionally, the authors look at the results of transformation and its ability to improve social standards, income, and growth.

Regulated Systems for Multiphase Catalysis (Hardcover, 2008 ed.): Walter Leitner, Markus Hoelscher Regulated Systems for Multiphase Catalysis (Hardcover, 2008 ed.)
Walter Leitner, Markus Hoelscher
R5,589 Discovery Miles 55 890 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

Multiphase catalysis is a key technology for the competitive and sustainable production of fine chemicals in coming decades. Astrid Erll, Herbert Grabes, Ansgar Nunning; Contributions by Simon Cooke, Anna-Lena Flugel, …
R6,092 Discovery Miles 60 920 Ships in 12 - 19 working days

Alongside the recent cultural turn in the humanities, there has been a noticeable return to ethical considerations. With regard to literature as well as other media, this has rekindled awareness of a tension, antagonism, or even disparity between ethics and aesthetics. This volume of articles takes a more systematic and cross-disciplinary approach to the widely mooted ethical turn in literature and other media than has been pursued so far. It brings together a wide range of critical perspectives from literary studies, media and cultural memory studies, and philosophy, tracing the complex and sometimes conflicting relationship between ethics and aesthetics in theoretical contexts and individual case studies as diverse as colonial architecture, nineteenth-century literary histories, and postmodern writing and art.

East Germany's Economic Development since Unification - Domestic and Global Aspects (Hardcover): Anja Hochberg, Jens... East Germany's Economic Development since Unification - Domestic and Global Aspects (Hardcover)
Anja Hochberg, Jens Hoelscher
R2,873 Discovery Miles 28 730 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

The first book in the Studies in Economic Transition series applies the theory of economic development to the economy of East Germany. Eight years after the unification of Germany, the book provides a comprehensive and much needed assessment of the transition process in the East, its impact on the German economy as a whole and the important broader lessons for European integration and enlargement. The unique economic experiment of the unification of the German economies provided an excellent opportunity for different schools of economic theory to be tested and examined. The contributors to this book take full advantage of this challenge.

Stephen F Frowen, Jens Hoelscher
R4,361 Discovery Miles 43 610 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

The book assesses the most exciting experiment in modern economic history - the German currency union of 1990 - on three levels. Firstly the international consequences are analysed utilising different paradigms of monetary theory. These controversial results lead to a closer look at the relationship between monetary policy and production in Germany, and thirdly, the book concludes with a reconsideration of the old economic question, whether money matters, applied to the German case.

Globalization of Capital Markets and Monetary Policy (Hardcover, 2005 ed.): Horst Tomann, Jens Hoelscher Globalization of Capital Markets and Monetary Policy (Hardcover, 2005 ed.)
Horst Tomann, Jens Hoelscher
R2,881 Discovery Miles 28 810 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

Globalization of capital markets has received new momentum and it will continue to be of major importance for the years to come. Partly, the increasing integration of financial markets and the rise of foreign direct investment is a consequence of world trade expansion. But in addition to this underlying trend, the worldwide collapse of socialist systems and the opening up of big economies like India and China have fuelled the development of globalized capital markets. This book takes stock of recent developments with emphasis on emerging capital markets.

Ulrike Gerhard, Michael Hoelscher, David Wilson
R4,223 Discovery Miles 42 230 Ships in 12 - 19 working days

This edited volume is a lively and timely appraisal of "ordinary cities" as they struggle to implement creative redevelopment and economic growth strategies to enhance their global competitiveness. The book is concerned with new and often unanticipated inequalities that have emerged from this new city movement. As chronicled, such cities - Cleveland (USA), Heidelberg (Germany), Oxford (UK), Groningen (Netherlands), Montpellier (France), but also cities from the Global South such as Cachoeira (Brazil) and Delhi (India) - now experience new and unexpected realities of poverty, segregation, neglect of the poor, racial and ethnic strife. To date planners, academics, and policy analysts have paid little attention to the connections between this drive in these cities to be more creative and the inequalities that have followed. This book, keenly making these connections, highlights the limited visions that have been applied in this planning drive to make these cities more creative and ultimately more globally competitive.

The Reality of the Mind - St Augustine's Philosophical Arguments for the Human Soul as a Spiritual Substance (Paperback):... The Reality of the Mind - St Augustine's Philosophical Arguments for the Human Soul as a Spiritual Substance (Paperback)
Ludger Hoelscher
R1,528 Discovery Miles 15 280 Ships in 9 - 17 working days

Among the various approaches to the question of the nature of the mind (or soul), Augustine's philosophical arguments for the existence of an incorporeal and spiritual substance in man and against materialism are here thoroughly examined on their merits as a source of insight for contemporary discussion. This book, originally published in 1986, employs Augustine's method of introspection, and argues that, as a philosopher, Augustine can teach the modern mind how to detect the reality of such a spiritual subject in and through basic human acts and faculties, such as imagination, memory, knowledge, free-will and self-knowledge. It presents a critical dialogue with various materialistic anthropologies directly addressed by Augustine himself, or those which have arisen at later periods, including epiphenomenalism, mind-brain identity theory, Marxism and others.

Art as Information Ecology - Artworks, Artworlds, and Complex Systems Aesthetics (Hardcover): Jason A. Hoelscher Art as Information Ecology - Artworks, Artworlds, and Complex Systems Aesthetics (Hardcover)
Jason A. Hoelscher
R2,304 Discovery Miles 23 040 Ships in 12 - 19 working days

In Art as Information Ecology, Jason A. Hoelscher offers not only an information theory of art but an aesthetic theory of information. Applying close readings of the information theories of Claude Shannon and Gilbert Simondon to 1960s American art, Hoelscher proposes that art is information in its aesthetic or indeterminate mode-information oriented less toward answers and resolvability than toward questions, irresolvability, and sustained difference. These irresolvable differences, Hoelscher demonstrates, fuel the richness of aesthetic experience by which viewers glean new information and insight from each encounter with an artwork. In this way, art constitutes information that remains in formation---a difference that makes a difference that keeps on differencing. Considering the works of Frank Stella, Robert Morris, Adrian Piper, the Drop City commune, Eva Hesse, and others, Hoelscher finds that art exists within an information ecology of complex feedback between artwork and artworld that is driven by the unfolding of difference. By charting how information in its aesthetic mode can exist beyond today's strictly quantifiable and monetizable forms, Hoelscher reconceives our understanding of how artworks work and how information operates.

Bank Restructuring and Resolution (Hardcover): David S Hoelscher Bank Restructuring and Resolution (Hardcover)
David S Hoelscher
R2,917 Discovery Miles 29 170 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

Systemic financial crises have become a common albeit infrequent feature of the global financial landscape. Since 1980, nearly every country has been affected by serious financial distress or systemic financial crises. Resolution of such crises requires a complex mix of macroeconomic and financial sector policies. One important element in the resolution of such crises is the restructuring and resolution of problem banks, with considerable experience gained in this area in the past decade. This volume outlines the theoretical insights that have been gained and the practical lessons learned.

R4,270 Discovery Miles 42 700 Ships in 12 - 19 working days

This volume is a collection of original essays prepared by colleagues, collaborators, and former students on the occasion of Helmut K. Anheier's 65th birthday and retirement from the University of Heidelberg. An internationally recognized pioneer of nonprofit and civil society studies, Anheier focused his work on providing clarity around (1) civil society, local and global, observing its origins and trajectory and developing theories to explain it; (2) the nonprofit sector and institutions within and extending from it, including nonprofit organizations, philanthropy and social investment; and (3) culture as it relates to democracy and back to civil society. The essays in this volume refer to these concepts and position them in the context of developments over the last two to three decades. The volume is arranged in three sections. The first section comprises essays that elucidate concepts and probe theories in the field. The second section presents chapters discussing current global challenges and trends in the focal areas. The third and final section then comprises country and regional case studies illustrating important aspects of the global challenges or theoretical issues of the two preceding sections. A fascinating and up-to-date overview of key issues and trends in civil society and nonprofit research by an international collection of eminent scholars in these fields, this book will be attractive to civil society and nonprofit sector researchers as well as a broader academic community of political scientists, sociologists, economists, and cultural experts.

Managing Diversity Flashpoints in Higher Education (Paperback): Joseph E. Garcia, Karen J. Hoelscher Managing Diversity Flashpoints in Higher Education (Paperback)
Joseph E. Garcia, Karen J. Hoelscher
R1,091 Discovery Miles 10 910 Ships in 12 - 19 working days

Covering a timely topic, which is more and more frequently in the news, this book offers vignettes that will sharpen the reader's ability to recognize and respond to difficult situations sparked by identity differences among faculty, staff, and students in college and university settings. The authors provide a systematic guide to addressing interpersonal conflicts that arise out of issues of identity difference, both for individuals and for campus work teams who provide direct service to students. Managing Diversity Flashpoints in Higher Education empowers readers to diagnose diversity flashpoint situations and positively address them without creating defensiveness and barriers to dialogue. The authors include an overview of the changing ethnic, racial, and gender composition of students in higher education in the United States and the major trends in campus responses to the changing student population. They offer an approach to creating higher education environments that welcome people of all cultural characteristics and promote civility on campus. The book is founded on the authors' research on diversity flashpoints in higher education for which they interviewed a national sample of student affairs professionals. The authors identified uncomfortable interpersonal situations with faculty members in which the discomfort arose from student identity difference. This process led to the formulation of strategies for using vignettes (resulting from interviews) in professional development sessions.

Globalization And Systemic Risk (Hardcover): Douglas D. Evanoff, George G. Kaufman, David S Hoelscher Globalization And Systemic Risk (Hardcover)
Douglas D. Evanoff, George G. Kaufman, David S Hoelscher
R4,614 Discovery Miles 46 140 Ships in 12 - 19 working days

The impact of globalization of financial markets is a highly debated topic, particularly in recent months when the issue of globalization and contagion of financial distress has become a focus of intense policy debate. The papers in this volume provide an up-to-date overview of the key issues in this debate. While most of the contributions were prepared after the initial outbreak of the current global turmoil and financial crisis, they identify the relative strengths of the risk diversification and risk transmission processes and examine the empirical evidence to date. The book considers the relative roles of banks, nonbank financial institutions and capital markets in both risk diversification and risk transmission. It then evaluates the current status of crisis resolution in a global context, and speculates where to go from here in terms of understanding, resolution, prevention and public policy.

Ruth Conroy Dalton, Christoph Hoelscher
R4,780 Discovery Miles 47 800 Ships in 12 - 19 working days

This book evaluates how we experience and understand buildings in different ways depending upon our academic and professional background. With reference to Rem Koolhaas' Seattle Central Library, the book illustrates a range of different methods available through its application to the building. By seeing such a variety of different research methods applied to one setting, it provides the opportunity for researchers to understand how tools can highlight various aspects of a building and how those different methods can augment, or complement, each other. Unique to this book are contributions from internationally renowned academics from fields including architecture, ethnography, architectural criticism, phenomenology, sociology, environmental psychology and cognitive science, all of which are united by a single, real-world application, the Seattle Central Library. This book will be of interest to architects and students of architecture as well as disciplines such as ethnography, sociology, environmental psychology, and cognitive science that have an interest in applying research methods to the built environment.

Geoff Hayward, Eugenia Katartzi, Hubert Ertl, Michael Hoelscher
R1,502 Discovery Miles 15 020 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

Policies to promote high participation in Higher Educations (HE) systems aim to deliver social justice and economic development through widening participation of under-represented groups. Degrees of Success provides a critical test of this through examination of participation and success of learners progressing to HE with a vocational background. Employing an original conceptual framework that combines the ideas of Basil Bernstein and Pierre Bourdieu the authors analyse the various transitional frictions experienced by learners with VET backgrounds on their journeys into and through the HE system. The findings indicate that including students with vocational qualifications does lead to widening participation but that their modes of participation may not provide fair access and outcomes. In part this is due to the epistemic incompatibilities between higher and vocational education which remain unresolved despite constant VET qualification reform. This book, therefore, extends the debate about widening participation beyond metaphors of barriers to access to consider the epistemic and pedagogical challenges of increasing student heterogeneity in high participation HE systems. The analysis and policy suggestions therefore have relevance for all seeking to support students' HE learning journeys, and policy makers concerned with how best to utilise HE systems as means of furthering social mobility and justice.
