This collection explores state-of-the-art methods and protocols for
research on photodynamic therapy (PDT) and its use in a wide range
of medical applications, from antiviral to anticancer. Beginning
with an extensive section on in vitro and in vivo models, the
volume continues with chapters on oxygen-independent
photosensitizers, next-generation photosensitization strategies,
contemporary insights into the immunomodulatory effects of PDT,
antimicrobial effects of PDT, as well as a variety of general
biochemical and molecular biological techniques. Written for the
highly successful Methods in Molecular Biology series, chapters
include the kind of detailed implementation advice that ensures
successful results in the lab. Thorough and authoritative,
Photodynamic Therapy: Methods and Protocols serves as an ideal
source of inspiration for both new and established PDT scientists
and a guide for designing innovative research programs in this
continuously advancing and multidisciplinary field.
Known for a tradition of Confucian filial piety, East Asian
societies have some of the oldest and most rapidly aging
populations on earth. Today these societies are experiencing
unprecedented social challenges to the filial tradition of adult
children caring for aging parents at home. Marshalling mixed
methods data, this volume explores the complexities of aging and
caregiving in contemporary East Asia. Questioning romantic visions
of a senior's paradise, chapters examine emerging cultural meanings
of and social responses to population aging, including caregiving
both for and by the elderly. Themes include traditional ideals
versus contemporary realities, the role of the state, patterns of
familial and non-familial care, social stratification, and
intersections of caregiving and death. Drawing on ethnographic,
demographic, policy, archival, and media data, the authors trace
both common patterns and diverging trends across China, Hong Kong,
Taiwan, Singapore, Japan, and Korea.

While American images of China have been characterized by a
fluctuating "love/hate" relationship, many educated urban Chinese
youths also retained ambivalent feelings toward the United States
in the early decades of the 20th century. The years between the end
of the Second World War and the outbreak of the Korean War
represented a significant period in Sino-American relations. This
study places the shifting perceptions of the United States among an
important political group--young, volatile, and politically active
urban Chinese--into historical perspective through the examination
of the origin, development, and eruption of their anti-American
sentiment. These feelings would prove to be a liability to the
Chinese Nationalist cause and would ultimately assist in easing the
way of the Communists into urban China. In the immediate post-World
War II period, American influence and presence in China reached an
unprecedented peak. However, American political, military, and
economic activities largely failed to generate Chinese good will;
instead, such actions produced political antipathy toward the
United States. The sojourn of American GIs in urban China, for
example, would serve as a critical factor in arousing nationalist
fervor. The Chinese Communist Party would capitalize on this
groundswell and push it to the foreground during open hostilities
with the United States after the outbreak of the Korean War.
"Cultural Chinese: Readings in Art, Literature, and History" is an
advanced language textbook with a new approach to cultural
integration and immersion. In this unique book, culture becomes the
very core of language learning, transitioning its role from context
to text. This textbook is ideal for courses in advanced Chinese and
Chinese culture. Third- and fourth-year students and instructors
will find themselves deeply immersed in the very fabric of Chinese
culture that governs personal behavior and directs social dynamics.
Features: each of nine lessons features a distinctive topic of
Chinese culture that serves as a portal to Chinese perceptions and
perspectives; main text of each lesson begins with a brief
introduction and is further illustrated with two historical or
mythological stories that inform Chinese values and attitudes;
additional mini-stories that challenge students' abilities of
cultural interpretation; includes a total of twenty-seven stories
familiar to every educated Chinese person that will prepare
students for meaningful communication and understanding; and, each
lesson includes more than ten sections of exercises intertwined
with culture, including vocabulary and idioms, historical
information, linguistic points, translation exercises, and online
research required for debate, composition, and storytelling.

This volume of Advances in Intelligent Systems and Computing
highlights papers presented at the Fifth Euro-China Conference on
Intelligent Data Analysis and Applications (ECC2018), held in
Xi'an, China from October 12 to 14 2018. The conference was
co-sponsored by Springer, Xi'an University of Posts and
Telecommunications, VSB Technical University of Ostrava (Czech
Republic), Fujian University of Technology, Fujian Provincial Key
Laboratory of Digital Equipment, Fujian Provincial Key Lab of Big
Data Mining and Applications, and Shandong University of Science
and Technology in China. The conference was intended as an
international forum for researchers and professionals engaged in
all areas of computational intelligence, intelligent control,
intelligent data analysis, pattern recognition, intelligent
information processing, and applications.
As an emerging discrete structural model, the Hencky bar-chain/net
model (HBM) has shown its advantages over other numerical methods
in some problems. Owing to the discrete properties of HBM, it is
also a suitable model for nano-scale structures which are currently
a very hot research topic in mechanics. This book introduces the
concepts and previous research of the Hencky bar-chain/net model,
before demonstrating how beams, columns, arches, rectangular plates
and circular plates could be successfully modelled by HBM. HBM
comprises rigid bars connected by frictionless hinges with elastic
rotational springs (and a system of torsional springs in the cells
for plates). In the treatment of the above-mentioned structures,
HBM is found to be mathematically equivalent to the first order
central finite difference method (FDM). So HBM may be regarded as
the physical structural model behind the FDM.This book is a
compilation of the authors' research on the development of the
Hencky bar-chain/net model, and is organized according to the
development and application of HBM for beams, columns, frames,
arches and rings, and plates. Exercises are provided at the end of
each chapter to aid comprehension and guide learning. It is a
useful reference for students, researchers, academics and
practitioners in the field of structural analysis.
The Chinese state uses cultural heritage as a source of power by
linking it to political and economic goals, but heritage discourse
has at the same time encouraged new actors to appropriate the
discourse to protect their own traditions. This book focuses on
that contested nature of heritage, especially through the lens of
individuals, local communities, religious groups, and heritage
experts. It examines the effect of the internet on
heritage-isation, as well as how that process affects different
groups of people.
