Ever since Genesis was reduced down to the trio of Phil Collins, Tony Banks, and Mike Rutherford, the former prog-rock giants had made a concerted effort to streamline their music into more bite-sized pop portions. GENESIS was an important bridge to this goal. Coupled with frontman/drummer Collins' burgeoning solo career and the emergence of MTV, the band soon gained a higher profile in the eyes of the record buying public. Genesis' prosperity, along with the solo success of individual members (particularly Collins) meant that GENESIS became part of a decade-long cycle in which band album releases alternated with those by Phil Collins. Driven by Banks' simple keyboard lines, "That's All" became the album's first hit and first of three videos shot for MTV. The other two, the ominous "Mama" and the humorous "Illegal Alien" both helped bolster the band's pop visibility. Although the Jan Hammer-flavored "Just a Job to Do" wasn't made into a video, this hard-driving song was later incorporated into an episode of the television program Miami Vice. Despite the obvious stylistic changes, art-rock elements still popped up particularly in "Home By the Sea" and the sequel, "Second Home By the Sea."
When Genesis reconvened to record 1986's INVISIBLE TOUCH, Phil Collins had a thriving solo career in both music and film, Tony Banks was recording movie scores, and Mike Rutherford was doing well in Mike & the Mechanics. Though it may have seemed impossible for the band to do better as a unit, this record spun off five Top 5 hits including the chart-topping title track. By tapping into a baby-boomer market that had lots of disposable income, Genesis became an adult contemporary god. INVISIBLE TOUCH represented the perfect hybrid that Genesis had been striving for: a pop sound mated with prog-rock flair. "Tonight, Tonight, Tonight" demonstrated this perfectly. Despite being over eight minutes long, the topic of dysfunctional relationships had enough universal appeal in it to be used in a beer commercial. "Land of Confusion," a straightforward number commenting on the pervasive greed of the '80s was one of the album's hit singles along with the soft-rock ballad "Throwing It All Away." The Domino Suite ("In the Glow of the Night," "The Last Domino") may have been a nod to the band's more progressive past, but the sweeping instrumental, "The Brazilian," truly harkened back to Genesis' art-rock glory days.
Digitally remastered reissue of the 1991 album includes one bonus video track 'This Time'. Recorded at Studio Guilaume Tell, Paris, France and Villa Salviati, Migliarino, Italy. Sting's most personal solo album (it was written in response to the death of his father), The Soul Cages is also his most ambitious. Many of the tracks ('Island of Souls', 'Mad About You') verge (impressively) on classical art song territory. For some, however, the good news here is that Sting is playing bass again; his simple yet effective lines are heard to particular advantage on the upbeat pop gem 'All This Time'. Another high point is 'Saint Agnes and the Burning Town', a flamenco-inflected instrumental tour de force unlike anything in Sting's catalogue. 2005.
Spanning 1981-2003, this unique collection highlights timeless ballads, love songs, and laid-back tracks from Phil Collins' award-winning solo catalog. Includes the #1 pop smashes "Groovy Kind Of Love," "One More Night," and the Oscar®-nominated "Against All Odds (Take A Look At Me Now)," presented here in a rare live version! Pop icon Phil Collins first rose to major fame as drummer and then lead singer for British prog-rock supergroup Genesis. It was with Collins at the mic that the band rose to arena-act stature. Collins' massive popularity as a solo artist, however, eclipsed even that level of success, as the soft-spoken superstar--who started as a child actor on the London stage--went on to become one of the biggest names in popular music over the next two decades.
