An excellent guide for understanding the trends, challenges and
opportunities facing China through globalization, this Handbook
answers the pertinent questions regarding the globalization process
and China's influence on the world. With contributions from leading
experts and international researchers, each chapter covers key
topics regarding China's participation in globalization, including:
China's new role in global economic governance; outward direct
investment; China's soft power and the implications for foreign
relations; global migration, diaspora and talent. An enriching
range of case studies and extensive empirical research are used to
explore the successes and failures of globalization in China, and
to discuss the dilemmas facing decision makers in today's
globalized world. A major contribution to the field, this Handbook
offers valuable insights to China's often misunderstood
globalization process. An essential reference for academics and
researchers looking for a go-to empirical resource, this Handbook
provides scholars of economics, politics and East Asian studies
with an exemplary selection of contemporary research on China and
globalization. Contributors: G. Arboit, L. Baker, J. Chaisse, G.

The book raised the question of how relations between the US and
China will unfold is one of the most consequential of the 21st
century. In the past decade, perhaps no thinker has had a greater
influence on how this question is understood in both the US and
China than eminent Harvard scholar Graham Allison, who developed
the idea of the Thucydides Trap to warn of the risk of
war erupting between a rising power and a ruling power in the power transition process.
This book presents a comprehensive collection of Allison’s views
and writings on US-China relations from 2017 to 2022, covering a
range of topics including the balance of power between the two
sides, where the relationship is headed, and lessons from history
on how conflict can be avoided. The book is presented in an
accessible Q&A format and draws on interviews, articles, and
reports, as well as dialogues between Professor Allison
and Dr. Huiyao Wang from the
Center for China and Globalization (CCG), a
non-governmental think tank based in Beijing. The book also
includes an introduction and afterword by Dr. Huiyao Wang,
CCG president and editor of this volume.
In an attempt to make sense of the complex process of adaptation
that Chinese enterprises must go through in the course of “going
outâ€, this book provides a multidimensional analysis of the
driving forces, legal and systemic hurdles, as well as the risks
and opportunities that Chinese enterprises must consider as they
seek greater fortunes beyond their own borders.Â
Comprehensive surveys conducted on a range of enterprises provide
the foundation for an overview of the current state of Chinese
companies operating overseas and developing trends in their
overseas investment. Specific topics include key challenges that
companies face, their strategies and ultimate goals, as well as
their practical experience in investing abroad, especially in Belt
and Road countries. Also included are the insightful views of
experts, scholars and entrepreneurs with a wealth of experience in
transnational investment in areas related to the globalization of
Chinese enterprises, including regional investment risk, overseas
talent strategies, legal and compliance issues, and even the role
of technology and the Internet in cross-border e-commerce, just to
name a few. It is our hope that this book will help readers better
understand the current state of Chinese enterprises expanding
globally, but even more importantly, we hope to provide valuable
information for individual enterprises looking to “go outâ€,
helping them clarify their investment strategies, make the most of
opportunities, manage challenges and take their business to the
next level.
This book provides a systemic and detailed monographic study of
Chinese outbound migration. It not only breaks down the basic
trends of this migration with respect to destinations and the like,
but also analyzes its unique features, which include the largely
middle- and upper-class makeup of emigrants and their investment
activities overseas, particularly when it comes to buying property.
The Chinese are the largest foreign buyers of real estate in the
US, Canada and Australia. By explaining this and other special
aspects of Chinese emigration and their impact on China and
receiving countries, this book provides a fresh and interesting
look at this important phenomenon.
The internationalization of Chinese enterprises is one of the most
notable aspects of economic globalization in the 21st century.
Despite the 2008 financial crisis and weak global outbound
investment, under the "go global" initiative, Chinese outbound
investment has gone from strength to strength, while also
diversifying in terms of investment modalities, destinations, and
industries. However, growing anti-globalization sentiment in some
countries has also created new challenges for Chinese firms
expanding internationally. Drawing on nearly 3000 data samples,
using both quantitative and qualitative research methods, this book
presents unique insights into the features and patterns of Chinese
enterprises' globalization. The analysis provides a useful
reference for enterprises that have already gone global and those
that plan to. In particular, this book investigates challenges
confronted by Chinese companies when doing business in foreign
countries. It summarizes research covering three angles, namely:
the current situation, causation analysis and corresponding
solutions, and recommendations for firms, government agencies and
other institutions. This book provides a comprehensive overview to
help readers to grasp the broad picture of the international
expansion of Chinese enterprises. It has important reference value
for enterprises to help devise foreign investment strategy, seize
opportunities, and navigate challenges in the course of
globalization.
The authors investigate the phenomenon of highly skilled Chinese
returnees and their impact on the development of the Chinese
economy and society, and on the transformation of China into a key
player on the global stage. They analyse the reasons why Chinese
entrepreneurs choose to return to their native country and how
their overseas experience shapes their attitude and behaviours.
This study is solidly grounded on fresh data from online and
offline surveys and on evidence collected in over 200 interviews of
successful returnees entrepreneurs. These global Chinese returnees
have contributed to the rise of Chinese economy into a global
powerhouse and this continuing brain movement and circulation will
have much more future implications and impact for China's exchange
with outside world.
This book is open access under a CC BY-NC-ND license. Ambassadors
are a kind of vehicle and bellwether for globalization. These
diplomatic envoys serve as pivotal contact points between nations
across a wide range of fields, from economics and culture to health
and the environment. The special group of ambassadors in this book
- those based in Beijing - are at the forefront of what for many
countries is one of their most important bilateral relationships,
as well one of the most striking and consequential aspects of
global affairs in the 21st century: the rise of China on the world
stage. This book aims to present an overview of China and the world
from diverse angles. It brings together essays by ambassadors to
China on a range of bilateral and multilateral issues, including
trade and investment, regional economic cooperation, sustainable
development, technology and innovation, and entrepreneurship. Given
their familiarity with China and extensive international
experience, the insights of these ambassadors are useful for
policymakers, academics, entrepreneurs, students, and anyone trying
to make sense of our rapidly changing world.
This open access book brings together leading international
scholars and policy-makers to explore the challenges and dilemmas
of globalization and governance in an era increasingly defined by
economic crises, widespread populism, retreating internationalism,
and a looming cold war between the United States and China. It
provides the diversity of views on those widely concerned topics
such as global governance, climate change, global health,
migration, S&T revolution, financial market, and sustainable
development. It is a truly unique book. Never before has such an
authoritative group of essayists come together to develop deep new
thinking about global governance that is relevant to current shared
global challenges. They express deep concerns about the
historically unprecedented upheavals in the world. They describe
the unparalleled turbulence that mankind is facing in the form of
multiple crises, any one of which has the potential to bring
civilization to its knees. The most obvious of these is the threat
posed by climate change. They spell out why these perils pose a
stark choice for the human race. They stress how any path that
leads to conflict increases the risk of catastrophe. In this
context, the common thread is that a consensus must be reached
about the future of our world. They have put forward many ideas and
potential new policies, reflecting their vision of what this
consensus should be and how it is the only way forward for the
human race.
Globalization is an irresistible force. Given the high stakes at
hand - for stability, continued growth, and the future of our
planet - it is more important than ever that China gain a deeper
understanding of the rest of the world, and that the rest of the
world also comes to a clearer understanding of China. This book
focuses on globalization and China's evolving role in the world,
offering unique perspectives on a remarkable period, which saw the
global landscape reshaped by China's continued rise, intensifying
great power competition, and a deadly pandemic. The essays center
on three interconnected themes - China's remarkable development
under the Reform and Opening-up policy, China's deepening
integration into the global economy and rise in a multipolar world,
and the quest to reinvigorate global governance and multilateralism
to address the pressing global challenges of the 21st century.
These insights are useful for academics, policymakers, students,
and anyone trying to deepen their understanding of China's
development and role in making globalization work for our
multipolar world.
This book carries out comprehensive research on the underlying
problems regarding the globalization of Chinese enterprises. It
also proposes practical solutions for dealing with difficulties in
the legal sphere, legislation, international talent development,
and financing solutions for Chinese firms going global. In light of
the great opportunities and space for outbound investment, this
book also provides insights on how to push forward the Belt and
Road Initiative. The insights herein help readers understand the
basic state of Chinese enterprises in overseas development and has
important reference value for enterprises looking to gain a better
understanding of foreign investment strategies, make the most of
opportunities and challenges and promote their development at a
higher level.
This book offers the most comprehensive, up-to-date assessment of
China's domestic and international migration. Restructuring
economic development requires large numbers of educated and skilled
talents, but this effort comes at a time when the size of China's
domestic workforce is shrinking. In response, both national and
regional governments in China have been keen to encourage overseas
Chinese talents and professionals to return to the country.
Meanwhile, the Chinese government has initiated a number of
policies to attract international highly-skilled talents and
enhance the country's competitiveness, and some Chinese policies
have started attracting foreign talents, who are coming to the
country to work, and even to stay. Since Chinese policies,
mechanisms, and administration efforts to attract and retain
skilled domestic or overseas talents are helping to reshape China's
economy and are significantly affecting the cooperation on
migration and talent mobility, these aspects, in addition to being
of scholarly and research interest, hold considerable commercial
potential.
Talent has become the most important resource for organizations
across a wide range of sectors throughout the world including
business, non-profit, and government. These organizations are now
engaged in an increasingly fierce competition to acquire the best
talent as they seek to gain the upper hand in today's fast changing
environment. By combining the body of knowledge on entrepreneurship
and talent management from a global perspective, this book provides
a synthesized understanding of entrepreneurial mobility and talent
management in the entrepreneurship and innovation ecosystem. The
expert contributors combine empirical evidence and case studies to
provide a nuanced understanding of global talent management from an
international comparative perspective. The topics discussed include
China's return migration and its impact on Chinese development,
local engagement and transformation of Chinese communities in
England, and reverse migration from the US to China. Furthermore,
from a comparative perspective, contributors examine global talent
and entrepreneurial mobility in the contexts of Silicon Valley,
European university spin-off practices and entrepreneurial
ecosystems in France, Italy, and South Korea, respectively.
Scholars and students in entrepreneurship and talent management
will find the scope for future research useful in their work.
Entrepreneurs, managers, and policymakers will benefit from the
examination of global perspectives and different national contexts.

Multinational corporations (MNCs) have long played a crucial role
in the Chinese economy. This role is one that is set to continue in
the post-pandemic era as China works to transit to a high-quality
growth model that is more sustainable and innovation-driven. With
global experience and front-line involvement in some of the most
pressing economic, technological, and environmental issues of our
day, leading figures in MNCs and chambers of commerce are well
placed to share insights that could potentially contribute to
policymaking and development strategies so that everyone can "make
the most" of China's future. This collection of essay aims to share
these invaluable insights with a wider audience, offering balanced
and diverse perspectives from companies and advocacy groups working
on a range of issues related to China's domestic development,
international economic cooperation, and China-US competition. These
insights are useful not only for the wider business community, but
also for academics, policymakers, students, and anyone trying to
deepen their understanding of this exciting period of "transition

Mainland China businesses are going global, transforming the
country from a manufacturing export platform into an overseas
investment powerhouse. China Goes Global is the most thorough and
up-to-date empirical analysis of the accelerating effort of Chinese
companies to go global by investing overseas. It details the
overall trends of this activity with respect to its sectors,
channels, overseas targets, and particular firms, along the role of
Chinese Government policy in facilitating business enterprise
globalization. The book offers readers an enterprise level of view
outward expansion by Chinese firms that is focused not only on the
big-names, but also less well-known, but equally important
trailblazing enterprises. In doing so it offers practical
suggestions on how firms can tackle the challenges encountered when
expanding outward.

In recent years, a new spectacular group of entrepreneurs in China
called Chinese Returnee Entrepreneurs (CREs) has emerged. Not only
have they contributed enormously to the rapid growth of the Chinese
economy, but they also have connected China to the outside world in
today's globalized economy. This book examines the literature on
the returnee phenomena and assesses the impact and influence of
Chinese Returnee Entrepreneurs. This is the first major empirical
study to evaluate the impact of CREs in the Chinese globalization
process. It also examines the roles, drivers, strategies, and
performances of CREs on environment-strategy linkages in a strong
emerging economy. The research highlights the significance of
strategies, drivers, constraints, and performance relations for
CREs success in shaping their operational framework in China. The
findings of this study suggest that CREs have become a driving
force in Chinese globalization, dominating the internet, IT and
media industries. They have become leading players in the Chinese
hi-tech industries, as well as the best team players and social
capital users of international guanxi. The study reveals that CREs'
competitive advantages lie in their strategies utilizing
technology, team work, market approach, social connections,
professional qualifications, and international working experience.

This important reference title focuses exclusively on the elite
entrepreneurs of new China and contains more than 100 substantial
profiles of top overseas returnees who have made noteworthy
contributions to the Chinese economy since the reform era began in
1978. For the purpose of this book, a returnee is defined as a
Chinese native who was born in China, left to study overseas as a
student, visiting scholar or guest researcher for over one year,
and has returned to China to work on a permanent basis. This edited
book begins with an introduction outlining the brief history of the
returnees, and their impacts on Chinese society in general and
economic development in particular. The biographical work
summarizes each individual's life and business career, with a
central focus on his/her accomplishments and the key roles played
in the new Chinese economy. Also included are: references; a list
of common abbreviations; and English-Chinese cross references of
individual names indexed in the book.
