This book is about older women's strength, freedom, tenacity, determination, resilience, independence, social and political involvement and, in particular, it is about re-imagining ageing. Older women represent the great majority of older people. The book describes instances of age and gender discrimination and examples of social inclusion and protagonism of older women in Europe. It solicits a change in perspective, focusing on the necessary societal changes to make space to older people and older women in particular. How is society going to address age and gender discrimination in social and institutional settings? How should work settings change to effectively make space to older workers and in particular older women? How should the pension system change? How could public health systems could provide effective care to older people and be sustainable? This edited collection focuses on older women's rights rather than their needs, adopting a human rights based approach. Preservation of older women's dignity, autonomy and security is its central topic, that is, ensuring that their rights are recognised. This collection offers insights valuable to a wide array of human rights activists, professionals, policymakers and social scientists, and older women themselves.
The study presented in this volume examines how older women's
identities are socially constructed and, in particular, how they
can be influenced by institutional intervention. The interest in
identity production is not only theoretical, but also practical.
Different perceptions of oneself as an older woman involve
considerable differences in the definition of that person's
possible sphere of action, and therefore, in her life perspectives.
The data -- collected during a four-year project studying older
women -- consist of video recordings of the committee meetings of
the Older Women's Group of Perugia, Italy. Other video recordings
of theater workshops and of the management committee meetings of
the Senior Citizen Centers in Perugia are used as a source of
comparison. Transcripts of the video material are analyzed through
a detailed discourse analysis within an ethnomethodological
framework. The data are used to explore how gender and age
identities are interactionally constructed in specific
institutional contexts.

This collection of essays is about dependent older people and their families, that is, older people who need help in their daily life: from the frail elderly who need mainly minor assistance in performing housework or for transportation, to severely disabled older people, bed-ridden or senile. The studies reported in this book offer a wide and informed overview of issues connected with caring for frail and disabled older people, whether carried out by family caregivers, paid helpers or formal caregivers. That the number of older people world-wide is increasing can certainly be considered a human achievement, but at the same time it generates a series of problems that must be faced.
This book is intended for social sciences researchers, in a variety of disciplines, including sociology, sociolinguistics, psychology, gerontology, and ethnography, who, during all stages of their research, be it quantitative or qualitative, are confronted with ethical dilemmas. As such, the chapters in this book provide the reader with examples of ethical reflection within the research process. The selection does not cover all the possible ethical issues they may face, but all of the chapters deal with the complex and unexpected, but fundamental, ethical questions that arise before, during and after fieldwork, and which do not always find clear guidance from the professional ethical codes they submit to. The studies in this book contribute to the present debate on ethical issues in social sciences research, in addition to problematizing a normative approach to ethics in social sciences research, and highlighting the importance of considering the social character of research activities when applying ethical guidelines or Research Ethic Committees' prescriptive procedures. These essays document researchers' practical moral reasoning in carrying out their research activities and in complying with the relevant legislation in relation to protecting research participants. Practices of ethics are identified and made describable; they are made the object of empirical documentation. This book shows that a new empirical approach to ethics as a discipline is emerging, having practices of ethics as its specific object of study.
