Examines the general problems of designing and constructing sites for buildings. Coverage includes: site construction and planning, placing buildings on sites, landscape planning, drainage, site traffic for vehicles and pedestrians, parking, lighting, handicap facilities and much more.
This accessible guide to seismic design examines what earthquakes do to buildings and what can be done to improve building response to earthquakes. International examples and photographs are included as important learning aids in understanding the effects of earthquakes on structures.
A practical, up-to-date introduction on truss analysis, application and design. Describes the influence of trusses on design development as well as the means for design and detailing of truss construction utilizing contemporary building technologies. Illustrations include both historical and recent uses of trusses.
For over sixty years, a primarysource for design of steel structures--now revised and updated Examining a wide range of steel structures, building types, and construction details, Simplified Design of Steel Structures, Eighth Edition is a reliable, easy-to-use handbook that covers all commonly used steel systems, practices, and research in the field, reinforced with examples of practical designs and general building structural systems. The Eighth Edition of this leading book in the noted Parker/Ambrose Series of Simplified Design Guides has been updated to conform to current building codes, design practices, and industry standards. Featuring a wealth of illustrations, expanded text examples, exercise problems, and a helpful glossary, this outstanding tool: Uses the latest American Institute of Steel Construction (AISC) method of structural design Provides fundamental and real-world coverage of steel structures that assumes no previous experience Includes valuable study aids such as exercise problems, questions, and word lists to enhance usability
Organized for self-paced study, this user-friendly book can easily be understood by designers with no engineering training. Provides excellent guidance concerning how design can be used to control noise, privacy and room acoustics within buildings. Contains a summary of the basic types of sound problems that occur in buildings.
A fast guide to solving common design problems in building foundations, now in a new edition. Includes new material on settlements, soil modification, pole foundations, braced excavations, waterfront foundations, and slope stabilization. Written for those without full training as structural or design engineers, covering all the basics, including soil mechanics, design of common foundation elements, and the relations between building and foundation design, all supported by extensive illustrations. Mathematics is kept to a minimum, being generally restricted to simple algebra, plane geometry, and plane trigonometry.
"I would highly recommend the inclusion of this text in the office libraries of our member companies and those involved in the construction arena."—C. R. Wagus, Technical Director American Architectural Manufacturers Association. This updated edition of Simplified Building Design for Wind and Earthquake Forces brings attention to the serious need for building design and construction that can withstand extreme forces of nature. It presents a practical introduction to the fundamentals and explores problems encountered in designing for these natural disasters. Offers practical, easy-to-read explanations of design and construction practices
Featuring a simplified, accessible style with numerous example problems and solutions, as well as references and practical aids for home study, this is an excellent handbook for working architects, general engineers, and professionals in related fields. It is also a first-rate primer for architecture students. He is Editor of the Parker/Ambrose Series of Simplified Design Guides. He has practiced as an architect in California and Illinois, and as a structural engineer in Illinois. He recently retired as professor of architecture at the University of Southern California. He is a practicing structural engineer who teaches part-time at the University of Southern California.
Thomas Grey is a lucid dreamer who can't wake up. Or is he a high school math teacher abandoned by sanity? Or a prophet? Whomever he is, he faces down demons of all types, traveling dreamspace, multiple dimensions and throughout the Etherea racing with a mysterious entity in his quest to find the archetypes under the threat that if he doesn't, his reality -- and yours -- could be destroyed. This is either an aggressive literary project, a chronicle of a man's struggle with madness or metaphysical thesis. You may decide which. The author's avant-garde style is reminiscent of Mark Z. Danielewski. The fantasticism reminds one of Neil Gaiman. The story is truly his own.
I could hear it coming. Soft, but seething. Like whispered profanity. Like a matchstick burning, slowly, backwards, ready to fire up at its sulfurous tip. I could taste it. Like blood, but sweeter. Like candy, but far more serious. So began the experimental dream safari into macabre madness that J. Ambrose Sweigart compiled in volume one of Whispers and Shadows. Volume two finds Thomas Grey still in the woods, struggling with the realization that his dreams are his reality - and yours - while also trying to understand the true nature of the universe, and racing to stop a mysterious force from altering all existence forever.
A complete, accessible introduction to structural masonry fundamentals. This practical volume provides a thorough grounding in the design of masonry structures for buildings —with clear and easy-to-grasp coverage of basic materials, construction systems, building codes, industry standards, and simple computations for structural elements of commonly used forms of masonry. Well-written and carefully organized, the book:
Requiring only minimal prior experience in engineering analysis or design, Simplified Design of Masonry Structures is ideal for self-study or classroom use. It is an essential reference for architecture and engineering students and professionals.
This book is full of examples of what designers can do once they learn the basics. This book presents an overview of the structural design process for designers with limited backgrounds in engineering analysis and mathematics. Included is information on structural systems and materials, the development of the general form and basic elements of a specific system, and construction plans and details. Included are examples of eleven different structural systems, each with an explanation of the design and a sample set of construction plans and details.
The Control Agenda is a sweeping account of the history of the Strategic Arms Limitation Talks (SALT), their rise in the Nixon and Ford administrations, their downfall under President Carter, and their powerful legacies in the Reagan years and beyond. Matthew Ambrose pays close attention to the interplay of diplomacy, domestic politics, and technology, and finds that the SALT process was a key point of reference for arguments regarding all forms of Cold War decision making. Ambrose argues elite U.S. decision makers used SALT to better manage their restive domestic populations and to exert greater control over the shape, structure, and direction of their nuclear arsenals. Ambrose also asserts that prolonged engagement with arms control issues introduced dynamic effects into nuclear policy. Arms control considerations came to influence most areas of defense decision making, while the measure of stability SALT provided allowed the examination of new and potentially dangerous nuclear doctrines. The Control Agenda makes clear that verification and compliance concerns by the United States prompted continuous reassessments of Soviet capabilities and intentions; assessments that later undergirded key U.S. policy changes toward the Soviet Union. Through SALT's many twists and turns, accusations and countercharges, secret backchannels and propaganda campaigns the specter of nuclear conflict loomed large.
