The African Link - The African Link: British Attitudes in the Era of the Atlantic Slave Trade, 1550–1807: Anthony J. Barker The African Link - The African Link: British Attitudes in the Era of the Atlantic Slave Trade, 1550–1807
Anthony J. Barker
R963 Discovery Miles 9 630 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

The African Link, first published in 1978, breaks new ground in the studies of pre-19th century racial prejudice by emphasizing the importance of the West African end of the slave trade. For the British, the important African link was the commercial one which brought slave traders into contact with the peoples of West Africa. Far from remaining covert, their experiences were reflected in a vast array of scholarly, educational, popular and polemical writing. The picture of Black Africa that emerges from these writings is scarcely favourable – yet through the hostility of traders and moralising editors appear glimpses of respect and admiration for African humanity, skills and artefacts. The crudest generalisations about Black Africa are revealed as the inventions of credulous medieval geographers and of the late 18th century pro-slavery lobby. The author combines the more matter-of-fact reports of the intervening centuries with analysis of 17th and 18th century social and scientific theories to fill a considerable gap in the history of racial attitudes.

The Tidal Model - A Guide for Mental Health Professionals (Paperback): Prof Philip J Barker, Poppy Buchanan-Barker The Tidal Model - A Guide for Mental Health Professionals (Paperback)
Prof Philip J Barker, Poppy Buchanan-Barker; Foreword by Sally Clay and Irene Whitehill
R1,160 Discovery Miles 11 600 Ships in 9 - 15 working days

The Tidal Model represents a significant alternative to mainstream mental health theories, emphasising how those suffering from mental health problems can benefit from taking a more active role in their own treatment. Based on extensive research, The Tidal Model charts the development of this approach, outlining the theoretical basis of the model to illustrate the benefits of a holistic model of care which promotes self-management and recovery. Clinical examples are also employed to show how, by exploring rather than ignoring a client's narrative, practitioners can encourage the individual's greater involvement in the decisions affecting their assessment and treatment. The appendices guide the reader in developing their own assessment and care plans. The Tidal Model's comprehensive coverage of the theory and practice of this model will be of great use to a range of mental health professionals and those in training in the fields of mental health nursing, social work, psychotherapy, clinical psychology and occupational therapy.

A Key for Identification of Rock-Forming Minerals in Thin Section (Hardcover): Andrew J. Barker A Key for Identification of Rock-Forming Minerals in Thin Section (Hardcover)
Andrew J. Barker
R5,334 Discovery Miles 53 340 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

Structured in the form of a dichotomous key, comparable to those widely used in botany, the mineral key provides an efficient and systematic approach to identifying rock-forming minerals in thin-section. This unique approach covers 150 plus of the most commonly encountered rock-forming minerals, plus a few rarer but noteworthy ones. Illustrated in full colour, with 330 plus high quality mineral photomicrographs from a worldwide collection of igneous, metamorphic, and sedimentary rocks, it also provides a comprehensive atlas of rock-forming minerals in thin-section. Commencing with a brief introduction to mineral systems, and the properties of minerals in plane-polarised and cross-polarised light, the mineral key also includes line drawings, tables of mineral properties and an interference colour chart, to further aid mineral identification. To minimise the chance of misidentification, and enable less experienced petrologists to use the key with confidence, the key has been arranged to prioritise those properties that are most easily recognised. Designed for simplicity and ease of use, it is primarily aimed at undergraduate and postgraduate students of mineralogy and petrology, but should also provide a valuable source of reference for all practising geologists dealing with rock thin sections and their interpretation.

Inositol Phosphates and Lipids - Methods and Protocols (Paperback, 2010 ed.): Christopher J. Barker Inositol Phosphates and Lipids - Methods and Protocols (Paperback, 2010 ed.)
Christopher J. Barker
R2,964 Discovery Miles 29 640 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

Inositol, in its native or lipid derived forms, serves as a master building block which, when phosphorylated, leads to the construction of more than 30 unique isomeric forms that are employed in vital but diverse regulatory roles in cells. In Inositol Phosphates and Lipids: Methods and Protocols, expert researchers introduce the basic methodological tools to measure inositol lipids and phosphates and also describe new approaches that have become available in the last 10 years, including RNA-silencing and the use of fluorescently labeled PH-domains to measure inositides in real-time in live cells, new sensitive methods to measure mass of both phosphates and lipids, as well as protocols involving inositol pyrophosphates. Written in the highly successful Methods in Molecular Biology (TM) series format, chapters include introductions to their respective topics, lists of the necessary materials and reagents, step-by-step, readily reproducible laboratory protocols, and notes sections, detailing tips on troubleshooting and avoiding known pitfalls. Authoritative and cutting-edge, Inositol Phosphates and Lipids: Methods and Protocols compiles many of the techniques that underscore phosphorylated inositol cell biology in one convenient guide.

Settler - Identity and Colonialism in 21st Century Canada (Paperback): Emma Battell Lowman, Adam J Barker Settler - Identity and Colonialism in 21st Century Canada (Paperback)
Emma Battell Lowman, Adam J Barker
R446 Discovery Miles 4 460 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

Canada has never had an "Indian problem"-- but it does have a Settler problem. But what does it mean to be Settler? And why does it matter? Through an engaging, and sometimes enraging, look at the relationships between Canada and Indigenous nations, Settler: Identity and Colonialism in 21st Century Canada explains what it means to be Settler and argues that accepting this identity is an important first step towards changing those relationships. Being Settler means understanding that Canada is deeply entangled in the violence of colonialism, and that this colonialism and pervasive violence continue to define contemporary political, economic and cultural life in Canada. It also means accepting our responsibility to struggle for change. Settler offers important ways forward -- ways to decolonize relationships between Settler Canadians and Indigenous peoples -- so that we can find new ways of being on the land, together. This book presents a serious challenge. It offers no easy road, and lets no one off the hook. It will unsettle, but only to help Settler people find a pathway for transformative change, one that prepares us to imagine and move towards just and beneficial relationships with Indigenous nations. And this way forward may mean leaving much of what we know as Canada behind.

For many years, what has been known about recovery from addictive behaviors has come solely from treatment studies. Only recently has the study of recoveries in the absence of formal treatment or self-help groups provided an alternative source of information. This book on the process of self-change from addictive behaviors is the first of its kind, as it presents more than research findings. Rather, it presents the process of self-change from several different perspectives - environmental, cross-cultural, prevention and interventions at both societal and individual level. It provides strategies for how health care practitioners and government policy makers alike can aid and foster self-change. Directions for future research priorities are also presented.

The second edition of this ACOL text, which was first published in 1987, continues to provide the analyst with an excellent introduction to mass spectrometry by the adoption of a practical approach in which the theoretical and operational aspects of this major analytical technique are combined. In the revised edition of this text, the author has expanded upon and reorganised the earlier material in order to bring it completely up to date. In addition to the basic theory of ion formation and behaviour, instrumentation and the interpretation of the spectra of simple organic compounds, this new edition reflects a number of the very important developments which have taken place in this field since the late 1980s. These include the burgeoning area of hyphenated mass spectral techniques, including gas chromatography—mass spectrometry (GC-MS), liquid chromatography—gas chromatography (LC-GS) and tandem mass spectrometry (MS-MS). Associated newer methods of interfacing, such as electrospray and ionspray, particle-beam and continuous flow coupling and atmospheric-pressure chemical ionisation are also covered. The current widespread use of computing techniques in structure elucidation is also considered, along with the important area of inorganic mass spectrometry for analysing surfaces, bulk solids and solutions. Analytical Chemistry By Open Learning This series provides a uniquely comprehensive and integrated coverage of analytical chemistry, covering basic concepts, classical methods, instrumental techniques and applications. The learning objectives of each text are clearly identified and the student’s understanding of the material is constantly challenged by self-assessment questions with reinforcing or remedial responses. The overall objective of Analytical Chemistry by Open Learning is to enable the student to select and apply appropriate methods and techniques to solve analytical problems, and to interpret the results obtained. We are grateful to Dr Roger Taylor of the University of Sussex, UK for supplying the spectrum of fullerene used on the front cover.

William A Link, Richard J. Barker
R1,498 Discovery Miles 14 980 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

This text is written to provide a mathematically sound but accessible and engaging introduction to Bayesian inference specifically for environmental scientists, ecologists and wildlife biologists. It emphasizes the power and usefulness of Bayesian methods in an ecological context.

The advent of fast personal computers and easily available software hassimplified the use ofBayesian and hierarchicalmodels . One obstacle remains for ecologists and wildlife biologists, namely the near absence of Bayesian texts written specifically for them. The book includes many relevant examples, is supported by software and examples on a companion website and will become an essential grounding in this approachforstudents and research ecologists.
Engagingly written text specifically designed to demystify a complex subject
Examples drawn from ecology and wildlife research
An essential grounding for graduate and research ecologists in the increasingly prevalent Bayesian approach to inference
Companion website with analytical software and examples
Leading authors with world-class reputations in ecology and biostatistics"

Making and Breaking Settler Space - Five Centuries of Colonization in North America (Paperback): Adam J Barker Making and Breaking Settler Space - Five Centuries of Colonization in North America (Paperback)
Adam J Barker
R954 Discovery Miles 9 540 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

Five hundred years. A vast geography. Making and Breaking Settler Space explores how settler spaces have developed and diversified from contact to the present. Adam Barker traces the trajectory of settler colonialism, drawing out details of its operation that are embedded not only in imperialism but also in contemporary contexts that include problematic activist practices by would-be settler allies. Unflinchingly engaging with the systemic weaknesses of this process, he proposes an innovative, unified spatial theory of settler colonization in Canada and the United States that offers a framework within which settlers can pursue decolonial actions in solidarity with Indigenous communities.
