Why do parents who have high levels of education tend to have
children who perform better at school, stay at school longer, and
end up with more desirable jobs? Researchers have evidence of how
distinct factors affect educational and occupational success, but
significantly less understanding of the actual mechanisms involved.
This work uses new Australian data to investigate those mechanisms,
examining how cultural participation and parental encouragement
affect adolescent and adult stratification outcomes in advanced
modern society. Crook develops theoretical accounts of the possible
mechanisms linking family background with socioeconomic success and
tests competing hypotheses using a synthetic approach drawing on
the strengths of the two distinct traditions of social
stratification research.
This book demonstrates how mathematical models constructed in
system dynamics modelling platforms, such as Vensim, can be used
for long-term management of environmental change. It is divided
into two sections, with the first dedicated to theory, where the
theory of co-evolutionary modelling and its use in the system
dynamics model platform is developed. The book takes readers
through the steps in the modelling process, different validation
tools applicable to these types of models and different growth
specification, as well as how to curve fit using numerical methods
in Vensim. Section 2 comprises of a collection of applied case
studies, including fisheries, game theory and wildlife management.
The book concludes with lessons from the use of co-evolutionary
models for long-term natural resource management. The book will be
of great interest to students and scholars of environmental
economics, natural resource management, system dynamics, ecological
modelling and bioeconomics.
In Balancing Change and Tradition in Global Education Reform,
Rotberg brings together examples of current education reforms in
sixteen countries, written by "insiders". This book goes beyond
myths and stereotypes and describes the difficult trade-offs
countries make as they attempt to implement reforms in the context
of societal and global change. In some countries, reforms are a
response to major political or economic shifts; in others, they are
motivated by large upsurges in immigration and increased student
diversity. Irrespective of the reasons for education reform, all
countries face decisions about resource allocation, equality of
educational opportunity across diverse populations, access to
higher education, student testing and tracking, teacher
accountability, school choice, and innovation. The essays in this
volume reveal: * the policy choices about the school reforms made
by countries throughout the world * the consequences associated
with these choices * the role that societal values, historical
antecedents, and political structures play in facilitating or
constraining reform Balancing Change and Tradition in Global
Education Reform is an invaluable resource for policymakers,
faculty, students, and anyone interested in how decisions made
about the education system ultimately affect the quality of
education, educational access, and social justice.
At first sight it may appear strange that a volume of Progress in
Pediatric Surgery should be devoted to the history of our
specialty. One assumes that progress is concerned primarily with
recent developments whilst history deals with matters of the past.
However, in the past there has also been considerable progress in
the development of our understand ing of paediatric surgical
problems, otherwise we would not have pro gressed to our present
achievements. The editors, therefore, do not apologize for
compiling this volume but, on the contrary, feel that the
publication of this volume is most timely. Modern paediatric
surgery has now been practised for three genera tions. The handful
of pioneers who were the founders of our specialty worked mainly
before the last world war. A few dozen of the inter mediary
generation started work immediately after the war, while the new
generation who are now dominating our specialty must be counted in
thousands. Two factors have radically altered paediatric surgery as
practised by the intermediary and the present generation of
surgeons."
: "BERLIN TO THE GULF OF MEXICO; POW 5518 REMEMBERS" author James
J. Crooke, Jr. On his third combat mission over Germany as a B-17
Navigator the formation of bombers exploded sending four of the air
crewmen to their deaths. The author and four other air crewmen
parachuted to quick captivity some 20 miles from Berlin. J. Earle
Bowden, Editor Emeritus The Pensacola News Journal in his column
January 27, 2007 succinctly describes the author's first book: "His
lean narrative provides the mirror through which we see the many
whose youth was cut short and their war transformed to cruel
isolation, while others fought to liberate Europe. His memoir is a
clearly articulated lesson for other generations." Bowden
continues: "With these revelations, Crooke hopes others will never
know the hard lessons of his generation. As the years have passed,
Crooke has obviously deepened his appreciation for all the old
familiar places that were and will never be again."
