China's influence in the South Pacific is growing rapidly. What are
the main driving forces behind China's policy toward the region?
Should the West be concerned? Why are there so many myths,
misperceptions, and unsubstantiated assertions about China's
growing influence? Where does discussion of China's presence in the
South Pacific fit in the broader debate on China? This book--the
first single-authored book on Chinese policy toward the South
Pacific--answers these questions. It examines Chinese engagement
with the region in the context of China's grand strategy, drawing
on extensive Chinese sources and interviews with policymakers and
community leaders.

angiogenesis, hypoxia, apoptosis and gene delivery as well as
expression in the understanding and utility of tumor molecular
biology for better cancer management.
China's massive economic restructuring in recent decades has
generated alarming incidences of mental disorder affecting over one
hundred million people. This timely book provides an
anthropological analysis of mental health in China through an
exploration of psychology, psychiatry, psychotherapy and
psychosocial practices, and the role of the State. The book offers
a critical study of new characteristics and unique practices of
Chinese psychology and cultural tradition, highlighting the
embodied, holistic, heart-based approach to mental health. Drawing
together voices from her own research and a broad range of theory,
Jie Yang addresses the mental health of a diverse array of people,
including members of China's elite, the middle class and
underprivileged groups. She argues that the Chinese government
aligns psychology with the imperatives and interests of state and
market, mobilizing concepts of mental illness to resolve social,
moral, economic, and political disorders while legitimating the
continued rule of the party through psychological care and
permissive empathy. This thoughtful analysis will appeal to those
across the social sciences and humanities interested in well-being
in China and the intersection of society, politics, culture, and
mental health.
This book describes the distribution of bamboo forest and bamboo
species for construction, the types and characteristics of both
engineered and natural full-culm bamboo materials for construction,
the development history and research status of different forms of
bamboo architecture. We go on to describe standards, relevant
international organizations, research institutions and production
and processing enterprises and typical cases. Starting from six
aspects, this book systematically describes modern bamboo building
development, analyzes the opportunities and challenges faced by the
bamboo construction industry and provides guidance for the
development of the bamboo construction industry in China.
Particularly in Chapter 6, more than 70 examples constructed mostly
since 2014 are selected to provide a detailed overview of the use
of bamboo as decorative and structural materials. In order to fully
explore the potential of bamboo in engineering applications, the
authors introduce the use of bamboo construction for transportation
facilities (bridges, highway landscape fences and bus stations),
landscape, water pipelines and urban municipal tunnels. The authors
hope readers are inspired by these most vivid cases and experience
the charm of modern Chinese bamboo architecture.
The mechanics of electromagnetic materials and structures has been
developing rapidly with extensive applications in, e. g. ,
electronics industry, nuclear engineering, and smart materials and
structures. Researchers in this interdisciplinary field are with
diverse background and motivation. The Symposium on the Mechanics
of Electromagnetic Materials and Structures of the Fourth
International Conference on Nonlinear Mechanics in Shanghai, China
in August 13-16, 2002 provided an opportunity for an intimate
gathering of researchers and exchange of ideas. This volume
contains papers based on most of the presentations at the
symposium, and articles from a few invited contributors. These
papers reflect some of the recent activities in the mechanics of
electromagnetic materials and structures. The first twelve papers
are in the order in which they were listed in the program of the
conference. These are followed by six invited papers in
alphabetical order of the last names of the first authors. We would
like to extend our sincere thanks to Professor David Y. Gao of
Virginia Tech for suggesting the symposium, and to the authors for
their time and effort invested in preparing their manuscripts. We
are also grateful to Professor Daining Fang of Tsinghua University
for co-chairing the symposium with J. S. Yang. Our special thanks

A boy dreams of long hair in this sweet story about self-expression
and embracing our most authentic selvesNoah has a special day
coming up, and he has a very long wish list. But there's one thing
missing from it, the thing he wants more than anything else in the
world: long, beautiful, wavy hair.Noah understands that his hair
will grow if he just doesn't get a haircut. But almost all the boys
that Noah knows have short hair, and he's heard people say mean
things about men with long hair. So, he just doesn't think he's
allowed to ask. When a fresh trim brings Noah to his lowest point,
it turns out his caring family has been paying closer attention
than he thinks-and they have an idea that will show Noah it's okay
to be his gorgeous self. This heartfelt, witty, encouraging story
from Christian Trimmer and J Yang will empower kids to share their
true selves with the world.
The principal role of the diagnostic surgical pathologist is to
serve a patient by assisting the clinician in charge of the
patient's care. In that capacity, the pathologist provides the vital
informationthat should be directly and indirectly useful in guiding
the clinician toward the most appropriate therapy. The material
pathologists receive most commonly is a biopsy or a part of an
organ removed after a definitive pro- dure. To extract useful
information, pathological evaluation proceeds according to a set of
guidelines. Simply reporting a diagnosis of cancer is inadequate.
Detailed additional information is needed so that the clinician can
go on to establish a the- peutic plan as needed. To best serve the
patient, close interaction between the cli- cian and the
pathologist is vital. In the field of urological pathology, there
are problems specific to this system. Typically, in the prostate,
because of its location, there is little room for a surgeon to work
to obtain adequate resection margins, unlike with many other
organs. As a result, questions arise such as "What constitutes an
adequate surgical margin?" "What is the significance of
extraprostatic extension of neoplasm that is still inside the
resection margin?" and "What is the significance of neoplastic
glands found on the resection margin marked with the ink?" It has
been shown that a prostate needle core biopsy can generate much
information that is immediately useful in predicting the extent of
cancer in the prostate and, consequently, the outcome for the
patient.

This book furthers readers' understanding of the amazing features
of six-membered transition states in stereoselective organic
reactions. Comprehensive and logically organized, it covers
reactions classified in four categories: [3,3]-sigmatropic
rearrangements, aldol reactions, metal allylation reactions, and
stereoselective reductions. There is a thorough discussion of each
reaction category, along with computational studies that support a
proposal of a six-membered state. The book assists professors,
researchers, and students in proposing reasonable transition states
for the description of newly discovered stereoselective reactions.
Polymer nanocomposites revolutionized research in the composites
area by achieving the nanoscale dispersion of the inorganic filler
(clay platelets) in the polymer matrices after suitable surface
modifications of the filler phase. A large number of polymer
matrices were tried and nanocomposites with varying degrees of
successes were achieved with these polymer systems. The majority of
the synthesis are carried out by melt blending which frequently
result in the full exfoliation of the filler. However, advanced
techniques provide a number of advantages as compared to the melt
blending and lead to more uniform composites with enhanced
properties. There are a number of recent advances in these methods
such as the use of reactive surfactants, modified initiators,
advanced clay surface modifications, use of a variety of fillers,
inverse polymerization, and miniemulsion polymerization methods
which have further led the generation of advanced exfoliated
nanocomposites. Until now, most of the published research has been
scattered throughout the literature. This book provides a single
comprehensive source of information about one of the most important
facets of polymer nanocomposites technology: synthesis in emulsion
and suspension. These polymerization methods lead to the generation
of the well delaminated polymer nanocomposites with a wide range of
polymer matrices. This book serves as both a professional reference
for experienced researchers and a valuable text for newcomers to
the field. It makes the reader aware of the potential commercial
use of these recent developments.
Part of the Neurosurgery by Example series, this volume on
peripheral nerve disorders presents exemplary cases in which
renowned authors guide readers through the assessment and planning,
decision making, surgical procedure, after care, and complication
management of common and uncommon disorders. The cases are divided
into four distinct areas of peripheral nerve pathology: entrapment
and inflammatory neuropathies, peripheral nerve pain syndromes,
peripheral nerve tumors, and peripheral nerve trauma. Each chapter
also contains 'pivot points' that illuminate changes required to
manage patients in alternate or atypical situations, and pearls for
accurate diagnosis, successful treatment, and effective
complication management. Containing a focused review of medical
evidence and expected outcomes, Peripheral Nerve Surgery is
appropriate for neurosurgeons who wish to learn more about a
subspecialty, and those preparing for the American Board of
Neurological Surgery oral examination.
