Higher education systems have changed all over the world, but
not all have changed in the same ways. Although system growth and
so-called massification have been worldwide themes, there have been
system-specific changes as well. It is these changes that have an
important impact on academic work and on the opinions of the staff
that work in higher education. The academic profession has a key
role to play in producing the next generations of knowledge
workers, and this task will be more readily achieved by a contented
academic workforce working within well-resourced teaching and
research institutions. This volume tells the story of academics'
opinions about the changes in their own countries.
The "Changing Academic Profession" (CAP) survey has provided
researchers and policy makers with the capacity to compare the
academic profession around the world. Built around national
analyses of the survey this book examines academics' opinions on a
range of issues to do with their job satisfaction. Following an
introduction that considers the job satisfaction literature as it
relates to higher education, country-based chapters examine aspects
of job satisfaction within each country.
The elegance of Tuscany's grand cities is found on a more intimate
scale in its numerous small towns and villages, the most charming
of which are celebrated in this revised, compact edition of the
bestselling book. Thirty-six villages from all over Tuscany feature
here, from those clustered around the great cities of Lucca and
Florence, which produce some of the finest olive oil and are home
to some of the world's greatest works of art, to the Chianti region
and the valley of the Orcia, devoted to the cultivation of aromatic
herbs. The vivid, highly descriptive accounts of each village are
accompanied by page after page of marvellous colour photographs.
`Beautifully composed photographs ... graceful, knowledgeable text'
- Country Living `Breathtaking photographs ... the riches and
variety of Tuscany are laid out for all to see ... a well balanced,
well presented and well written exploration of one of Italy's most
beautiful regions' - Contemporary Review

Prior to the Great War, poems, ballads and stories of conflict told
of glory, patriotism and courage in battle. But, after initial
dreams of heroic deeds, those that wrote of the First World War
were soon to express other sentiments.
Captain Sylvestre de Greybagges is your typical seventeenth-century
Cambridge-educated lawyer turned Caribbean pirate, as comfortable
debating the virtues of William Shakespeare, Isaac Newton, and
compound interest as he is wielding a cutlass, needling archrival
Henry Morgan, and parsing rum-soaked gossip for his next target.
When a pepper monger's loose tongue lets out a rumor about a fleet
loaded with silver, the Captain sets sail only to find himself in a
close encounter of a very different kind.
After escaping with his sanity barely intact and his beard
transformed an alarming bright green, Greybagges rallies "The Ark
de Triomphe" crew for a revenge-fueled adventure to the ends of the
earth and beyond.
Destined to become a cult favorite, this frolicsome tale of
skullduggery, jiggery-pokery, and chicanery upon Ye High Seas is
brimming with hilarious puns, masterful historical allusions, and
nonstop literary hijinks. Including sly references to Thomas
Pynchon, "Treasure Island," 1940s cinema, and notable historical
figures, this melange of delights will captivate readers with its
rollicking adventure, rich descriptions of food and fashion, and
learned asides into scientific, philosophical, and colonial
history.
Richard James Bentley, who happens to look the part of a salty
English sea captain, has trodden many paths and worn many hats.
From his early work as a dealer in dodgy motorcars, he progressed
to being a design engineer on a zeppelin project. Computers then
caught his attention and he authored a number of incomprehensible
technical manuals before turning to fiction. He has lived in
Switzerland and the Netherlands and now spins yarns in the north of
England. "Greenbeard" is his first novel.
