Xenakis: His Life in Music is a full-length study of the
influential contemporary composer Iannis Xenakis. Following the
trajectory of Xenakisa (TM)s compositional development, James
Harley, who studied with Xenakis, presents the works together with
clear explanations of the technical and conceptual innovations that
shaped them.
Harley examines the relationship between the composer and two
early influences: Messiaen and Le Corbusier. Particular attention
is paid to analyzing works which were vital to the composera (TM)s
creative development, from early, unpublished works to the
breakthrough pieces Metastasis and Pithoprakta, through the
oft-discussed decade of formalization and the evolving styles of
the succeeding three decades.

What is an immersive soundscape? It can be as simple as a recording
made in a forest: leaves crunching underfoot, birds chirping, a
squirrel chattering. Or it can be as complex as a movie soundtrack,
which involves music but also uses many other sounds--to set the
mood for the action and to literally put the viewer in the picture.
Sound art defies categorization, and artists using this medium
describe their work in many different ways: as sound installations,
audio art, radio art, and music.
"The Art of Immersive Soundscapes" provides a fascinating tour of
contemporary sound art practices that comprises scholarly essays,
artists' statements, and a DVD with sonic and visual examples.
Included are perspectives from soundscape composition and
performance, site-specific sound installation, recording, and
festival curation. The book and accompanying DVD will appeal to a
broad audience interested in music, sound, installation art, the
environment, digital culture, and media arts. Importantly, it
recognizes the pioneering place of Canadian sound artists within
this international field.

Kraanerg by Iannis Xenakis is one of the most important works of
the post-1950 era. James Harley, a leading Xenakis scholar,
presents the genesis of Kraanerg, from the granting of the
commission to the choreographer, to the selection of Xenakis as
composer, to the premiere, recording, and subsequent presentations.
The book is written with the benefit of access to sketches and
recordings in the Xenakis Archives, allowing Harley to delve into
the details of how this particular work came about. An overview of
Xenakis's life is provided, looking at his major works and
important compositional techniques and accomplishments, as well as
looking at the presenters of the work and other principles in the
performance history. Harley presents analytical and critical
discussions of Kraanerg's music and reception, including the
relationship of the score to the recorded parts. James Harley is a
composer with first-hand experience of the interlocking fields of
acoustic and electronic music that Xenakis made his own. The book
is accompanied by a CD, which helps to conceptualize the extremely
complex score.
