In erster Linie war es mein Bestreben in der ersten Auflage dieses Buches die Theorie der Gase auf einer moglichst exakten mathematischen Grundlage zu entwickeln. Dieses Bestreben ist bei der Vorbereitung einer neuen Auflage nicht in VergeBsenheit geraten, eB wurde jedoch gleichzeitig der Versuch gemacht, einen moglichst grossen Teil des Buches auch dem nicht mathematisch gebildeten Leser verstandlich zu machen. Ich habe deshalb den teilweise bereits in der ersten Auflage verfolgten Weg eingeschlagen, das Buch zum grossen Teil in mathematische und physikalische Kapitel einzuteilen. Der Leser, der namentlich an der physikali schen Seite des Gegenstandes interessiert ist, wird hoffentlich eine verstandliche Darstellung des gegenwartigen Standes desselben erhalten, wenn er die physikalischen Kapitell, 6, 7 und 11 bis 18 liest und die mehr mathematischen Kapitel bloss als Bezugs material betrachtet. Abgesehen davon ist meiner Meinung nach damit etwas gewonnen, dass die Grundlage durch eine eingehende mathematische Behandlung aufgeklart wird, bevor man an eine physikalische Diskussion herangeht. Seit die erste Auflage dieses Buches erschienen ist, wurde die Stellung der kinetischen Theorie einigermassen durch das Wachstum und die Entwicklnng der Quantentheorie revolutioniert, und es war keineswegs leicht, genau zu entscheiden, welche Be deutung der Quantentheorie in der Anordnung dieses Buches zu gesprochen werden sollte."
