This Festschrift honors George Samuel Fishman, one of the founders
of the eld of computer simulation and a leader of the disciplines
of operations research and the management sciences for the past ve
decades, on the occasion of his seventieth birthday. The papers in
this volume span the theory, methodology, and application of
computer simulation. The lead article is appropriately titled
"George Fishman's Professional Career." In this article we discuss
George's contributions to operations research and the m- agement
sciences, with special emphasis on his role in the advancement of
the eld of simulation since the 1960s. We also include a brief
personal biography together with comments by several individuals
about the extraordinary effect that George has had on all his
students, colleagues, and friends. Thesecondarticle,
titled"AConversationwithGeorgeFishman,"isthetranscript of an
extended interview with George that we conducted in October 2007.
In the article titled "Computer Intensive Statistical Model
Building," Russell Cheng studies resampling methods for building
parsimonious multiple linear regr- sion models so as to represent
accurately the behavior of the dependent variable in terms of the
smallest possible subset of explanatory (independent) variables.
The author shows how bootstrap resampling can be used not only for
rapid identi cation of good models but also for ef cient comparison
of competing models.
Leadership and Cooperation in Academia focuses on the place and the
role of universities in different societies, including their
influence on the socio-economic development of those
societies.Across the world academic institutions are being
questioned by their stakeholders and pressured to change. Answering
these questions requires that academics and professional managers
in universities think about their work, its value and organisation.
The book highlights the need for space and stimulus to reflect on
the responsibilities, roles and expectations that they identify for
themselves, and that others place upon them - then, they might be
better able to understand and to act. Similarly, policymakers and
higher education commentators need the space and stimulus to
reflect on the role of universities. This book will provide this
space and an invaluable contribution to the stimulus. This
innovative volume will be enriching to academics and professional
managers who are interested in leading, managing and contributing
in an academic environment. Policymakers and higher education
commentators concerned with the development and impacts of
universities will also find plenty of insightful information in
this timely study. Contributors: M.J. Aranguren, D. Bell, G.

This book focuses on the main challenges that cities, regions and
other territories at sub-national level face when it comes to
designing and implementing a territorial strategy for economic
development and competitiveness. There is a widespread recognition
that territories need to construct strategies that focus on shaping
sustainable competitive advantages. To do this they draw upon their
own unique resources and capabilities alongside intelligence on
existing technological and market trends. However, there is still a
notorious lack of both theoretical and empirical research on this
issue. The first part of this book develops a theoretical framework
for understanding and analysing territorial strategy. This
framework asks three questions of territorial strategy - what for,
what, and how - looking closely at the key relationship between
strategy and policy. The second part is dedicated to exploring this
framework in practice through application to a series of unique
cases from around the world at different territorial levels, from
regions such as the Basque Country, Navarre and Murcia in Spain,
Okanagan (British Columbia) in Canada, Wales in the United Kingdom,
and the cross-border region of the Oresund in Denmark-Sweden, as
well as the city of Rafaela in Argentina. Each case offers
something different and enables the framework to be thoroughly
tested, generating concluding reflections that add real value for
scholars and policy-makers interested in and working in the field
of territorial strategy. This volume is intended for the academic
community, the policy community (government leaders, policy-makers,
policy researchers and consultants) and university students and
teachers at different levels interested in the areas of territorial
competitiveness, regional development, competitiveness policies and
processes of territorial strategy.
Clustering as an economic policy concern has become increasingly
fashionable. The authors of this book shed light on this subject of
which there remains remarkably little understanding, and even less
agreement, regarding what clusters are, what they require for
success and what impacts they are likely to have in different
contexts, locally, nationally and globally. Clusters and
Globalisation brings together scholars with different perspectives
and theoretical groundings, and from different disciplines, to
consider conceptual arguments and case study material. In doing so
the volume identifies key characteristics and requirements of the
forms of cluster that are especially significant for the attainment
of economic success in a globalising world. This unique critical
analysis of clusters in the framework of globalisation will
strongly appeal to students and academics with an interest in
economic development, public policy and globalisation. The book
will also be of great interest to researchers in policy agencies
concerned with local economic development and the design of cluster
policies.

This compact and authoritative book brings together the topical
themes of networks and governance to advance understanding of the
determinants of local economic development in the context of
increasingly global relationships. Analyzing the governance of
networks is critical in understanding how individual localities are
able to promote development and consolidate positions within global
production systems. In addressing such issues, this book
accomplishes a significant bridging of disciplinary boundaries,
incorporating different theoretical and empirical perspectives on
the meanings and roles of territory, economic development and
different forms of networks and governance. Networks, Governance
and Economic Development brings together the analysis of leading
researchers in their fields, following their interactions at a
European Science Foundation exploratory workshop. The chapters will
be an invaluable resource to researchers working in the fields of
regional economic development, economic geography and economic
policy as well as postgraduate students taking modules that
specialize in aspects of the above themes.

This book presents an overview of the computational framework in
which calculations of relativistic hydrodynamics have been
developed. It summarizes the jargon and methods used in the field,
and provides illustrative applications to real physical systems.
The authors explain how to break down the complexities of
Einstein's equations and fluid dynamics, stressing the viability of
the Euler-Lagrange approach to astrophysical problems. The book
contains techniques and algorithms enabling one to build computer
simulations of relativistic fluid problems for various
astrophysical systems in one, two and three dimensions. It also
shows the reader how to test relativistic hydrodynamics codes.
Suitable for graduate courses on astrophysical hydrodynamics and
relativistic astrophysics, this book also provides a valuable
reference for researchers already working in the field.
Calculations of relativistic hydrodynamics are crucial to several areas of current research in the physics of supernovae and stellar collapse. This book provides an overview of the computational framework in which such calculations have been developed, with examples of applications to real physical systems. Beginning with the development of the equations and differencing schemes for special relativistic hydrodynamics, the book stresses the viability of the Euler-Lagrange approach to most astrophysical problems. It details aspects of solving the Einstein equations together with the fluid dynamics for various astrophysical systems in one, two and three dimensions.
"What an asset! Imagine having a person on your staff doing weekly
research on thematic materials for worship. What a time-saver to be
able to turn quickly to suggested calls to worship, prayers, and
hymns appropriate for the lectionary Sunday. Jim Wilson's book of
resources is like having him on your staff. Sharp, to the point,
thematic, clear." -- Richard B. Wilke, author of DISCIPLE Bible
Study series While the order of worship may remain consistent, its
various components need to be continually refreshed and made
relevant to each week's scripture readings. The resources in this
one-volume library provide pastors and worship leaders with maximum
flexibility -- there are responsive calls to worship, collects,
prayers of confession, and three suggested hymns based on each
lectionary text for every Sunday of the year in Cycle B. A
convenient scripture index is also included, making this volume one
of the most useful and necessary worship references in any pastor's
library.

Parables provide insights and lessons that are timeless. When they
are employed in preaching, the hearer receives images that are easy
to remember. "Preaching the Parables" provides a means of
communicating the teachings of Jesus for modern Christians.
With each parable Keeney includes:
1. Scripture Text so readers do not have to refer to the
Bible
2. The theme of the parable
3. The context of the parable
a) how it fits into the church year
b) how it relates to the other scripture passages for the
day
4. Some issues that the parable addresses
5. Ideas for preaching the parable
6. Creative illustrations which can be used in preaching

"Landing Zones" brings to life the dramatic, gripping, and often
painful stories of twenty-four Vietnam Veterans from the American
South. The men and women interviewed here represent a remarkable
range of experience, including a marine rifleman, a helicopter
pilot, an army nurse, a prisoner of war, a riverboat gunner, and
the commanding general William Westmoreland. Skillfully interviewed
by James R. Wilson, a journalist and Army press officer in Vietnam,
each narrative explores and describes the war's events before
following the veterans home and carrying them to the present.
These stories focus on a uniquely southern view of Vietnam. In
terms of numbers the South shouldered more than its share of human
cost--31 percent of Americans who served came from one of the
eleven states of the old Confederacy, and 28 percent of the dead
were southerners. Southerners also brought to Vietnam certain
shared cultural tastes and a particularly southern heritage of
honor in military service stemming from the Civil War. For many, as
their testimony reveals, a sense of patriotism was tested and
questioned by the horrors of war, and for others that patriotism
was a continued source of strength.
Individually and collectively, however, these oral histories make
up a picture of war that prevents us from forgetting the truth as
one veteran put it: "Vietnam was not one war, but a thousand little
nasty wars."
