“Brave, honest, deep and humorous†Jackie Jarvis, like many
before, not only answered the calling to walk, but to share the
insights and thoughts that accompanied her solo travelling by foot.
As Friedrich Nietzsche said, ‘All Truly Great Thoughts are
Conceived by Walking’. Packed full of great thoughts that were
conceived daily whilst the author walked over 3,000 kilometres
across Spain. Jackie takes you with her on her journeys helping you
make meaning of her insights. As you read, you too can transform
your life by walking with Jackie step by step. ‘A rare
combination of a series of epic adventures with a subtly woven
insightful diary that provokes deeper self-reflection’ ‘An
inspiring and uplifting sharing of in the moment thinking that
leaves the reader feeling like they are walking with Jackie on the
way’ ‘Personal writing at its best – astonishing honesty
combined with both humour and soul-searching truths.’
Busy business owner and coach, Jackie Jarvis, shares her personal
journey with honesty and humour. Reaching a point in her life when
she felt an urge to slow down and be truer to her heart's desire,
she found that the struggle with herself was the biggest challenge
of all. She writes about what many of us, living busy, fast paced
lives feel. She touches on what deep down we all have the greatest
longing for but at the same time are afraid to reach out for, and
afraid to give ourselves permission to have. If, like Jackie, you
listen to 'The Voice of Slow' and what it has to say to you, you
will become inspired to follow her path to slowing down, stressing
less and enjoying life more. Read slowly to appreciate the
important messages here for you. *This book is based on an earlier
version titled 'In Pursuit of Slow'.'In Pursuit of Slow' was an
Amazon Bestseller in the Top 50 Self Help category.
"As departments...scramble to decolonize their curriculum, Givens
illuminates a longstanding counter-canon in predominantly black
schools and colleges." -Boston Review "Informative and
inspiring...An homage to the achievement of an often-forgotten
racial pioneer." -Glenn C. Altschuler, Florida Courier "A
long-overdue labor of love and analysis...that would make Woodson,
the ever-rigorous teacher, proud." -Randal Maurice Jelks, Los
Angeles Review of Books "Fascinating, and groundbreaking. Givens
restores Carter G. Woodson, one of the most important educators and
intellectuals of the twentieth century, to his rightful place
alongside figures like W. E. B. Du Bois and Ida B. Wells." -Imani
Perry, author of May We Forever Stand: A History of the Black
National Anthem Black education was subversive from its inception.
African Americans pursued education through clandestine means,
often in defiance of law and custom, even under threat of violence.
They developed what Jarvis Givens calls a tradition of "fugitive
pedagogy"-a theory and practice of Black education epitomized by
Carter G. Woodson-groundbreaking historian, founder of Black
History Month, and legendary educator under Jim Crow. Givens shows
that Woodson succeeded because of the world of Black teachers to
which he belonged. Fugitive Pedagogy chronicles his ambitious
efforts to fight what he called the "mis-education of the Negro" by
helping teachers and students to see themselves and their mission
as set apart from an anti-Black world. Teachers, students,
families, and communities worked together, using Woodson's
materials and methods as they fought for power in schools. Forged
in slavery and honed under Jim Crow, the vision of the Black
experience Woodson articulated so passionately and effectively
remains essential for teachers and students today.
