This book presents the latest advances in photometric 3D
reconstruction. It provides the reader with an overview of the
state of the art in the field, and of the latest research into both
the theoretical foundations of photometric 3D reconstruction and
its practical application in several fields (including security,
medicine, cultural heritage and archiving, and engineering). These
techniques play a crucial role within such emerging technologies as
3D printing, since they permit the direct conversion of an image
into a solid object. The book covers both theoretical analysis and
real-world applications, highlighting the importance of deepening
interdisciplinary skills, and as such will be of interest to both
academic researchers and practitioners from the computer vision and
mathematical 3D modeling communities, as well as engineers involved
in 3D printing. No prior background is required beyond a general
knowledge of classical computer vision models, numerical methods
for optimization, and partial differential equations.
The second volume in a multi-part series, this book details British
fortifications used from the Tudor period beginning in 1485 through
the end of World War II in 1945. With the advent of firearms, the
Tudor period indeed opened a new chapter in the histories of
Britain, fortification and warfare. By 1500 AD, Britain and Europe
at large entered a new phase, marked by the foundation of colonial
empires and a broadened sphere of influence and rule. During the
following centuries, British sailors, ruthless adventurers,
fighting men, and greedy merchants laid foundations to fortify the
most widespread and most prosperous colonial Empire the world had
ever seen. This text focuses on British coastal fortifications and
on combinations of fortresses used for more general strategic
purposes. Featured structures have protected points of vital
importance, such as capital cities, military depots, ports, harbors
and dockyards at essential locations in Britain and throughout the
British Empire.
Covering 2000 years--from Roman times through the Cold War--this
book describes the evolution of military architecture in the
territory today known as the Netherlands. A vital ally of the
Dutch--their numerous rivers and canals--played a central role in
the defensive strategy of the country, particularly since the 17th
century. A general history covers the innovators, architects and
engineers of each period and their involvement in the development
of fortifications. Illustrations detail the technical features of
defensive structures, alongside discussion of the weapons and
tactics they were designed confront.
Domestication challenges our understanding of human-environment
relationships because it blurs the dichotomy between what is
artificial and what is natural. In domestication, biological
evolution, environmental change, techniques and practices,
anthropological trajectories and sociocultural choices are
inextricably interconnected. Domestication is essentially a hybrid
phenomenon that needs to be explored with hybrid scientific
approaches. Hybrid Communities: Biosocial Approaches to
Domestication and Other Trans-species Relationships attempts for
the first time to explore domestication viewed from across
disciplines both in its origins and as an ongoing process. This
edited collection proposes new biosocial approaches and concepts
which integrate the methods of social sciences, archaeology and
biology to shed new light on domestication in diachrony and in
synchrony. This book will be of great interest to all scholars
working on human-environment relationships, and should also attract
readers from the fields of social anthropology, archaeology,
genetics, ecology, botany, zoology, history and philosophy.
Featuring many detailed drawings, this history of military trains
and railways from 1853 through 1953 describes how the railroad
transformed the nature of warfare. Transport and logistics are
discussed for armored trains, rail-borne artillery and armored
combat vehicles, medical evacuation trains and draisines (light
auxiliary vehicles such as handcars). The railroad's role in
establishing European colonial empires in Asia and Africa is
examined. Conflicts covered include the Boer Wars, the American
Civil War, the Austro-Prussian War, the Franco-Prussian War, the
Russo-Turkish War, World War I, the Finnish Civil War, the Spanish
Civil War, World War II and the French Indochina War.
The story of Hitler's Wehrmachtsgefolge (armed forces auxiliaries)
is less well known than that of Germany's other armed forces in
World War II, such as the panzer divisions, the Luftwaffe and the
Kriegsmarine. The Organization Todt (construction company),
Reichsarbeitsdienst (labor service), Nationalsozialistische
Kraftfahrer Korps (driver's corp) and Volkssturm (people's militia)
were given the status of armed forces auxiliaries to protect their
members under the Geneva Conventions should they be taken prisoner.
By 1944, the Wehrmachtsgefolge comprised 40 percent of the German
armed forces, and their contribution to the war effort was far from
negligible. This illustrated history documents the development,
structure and organization, uniforms, regalia and technical data of
these units and discusses their role in the war and during the
prewar period.
This dictionary gives an enormous amount of basic information on
the Third Reich era by listing, and often depicting, German terms
connected to Nazism and the Germany of World War II. It includes
ranks, badges, insignia, regalia, medals, flags and banners,
weapons, uniforms, equipment, vehicles, fortifications, airplanes,
battleships, main Nazi concepts and organisations, slogans,
sayings, code names, nicknames, slang words, places of importance,
events and battles, treaties and alliances, industry and economics,
justice, art, religion, education, political parties, newspapers,
laws, institutions, and short biographies of Nazi leaders. To make
the rise of Nazism comprehensible, aspects of the Weimar Republic
have also been considered. In all there are 1,650 entries and 234
illustrations.
This book describes and illustrates French fortifications from 1715
(the death of Louis XIV) to 1815 (the fall of Napoleon), focusing
particularly on the Napoleonic era. After an historical background,
it covers the heritage of the Ancien Regime with the important
contributions of Vauban (the bastioned defense), Gribeauval's
reforms in artillery, and Montalembert's innovations. Chapters
explore the style of Napoleonic fortifications, siege warfare,
artillery and engineering corps, as well as the Napoleonic
achievements in France, Italy, German and the Netherlands,
including projects that were planned but never completed. Included
are nearly 250 line drawings of historic fortifications.

The Gebirgsjger were officially formed in 1935 following
Hitler's rejection of the Treaty of Versailles, although the
required skills had been fostered in preparation through civilian
climbing clubs. They were recruited predominantly from the southern
mountainous parts of Germany - Wurtemburg and Bavaria - and from
Austria, where Alpinism and mountain warfare had a long tradition.
Rigorously trained in skiing, climbing and other demanding skills
of mountain survival and combat, they formed an elite within the
German army, distinguished by the distinctive Eidelweiss cap badge
adopted in 1939. Jean-Denis Lepage gives a concise history of the
Gebirgsjger's employment, which saw them in action on every
front, from Lapland in the North to Tunisia in the south, and
throught the war, from the invasion of Poland to the final defence
of Germany. He then gives a detailed description of their uniforms
and insignia, equipment, organization, training and tactics. The
book is clearly illustrated throughout with over 170 of the
author's own line drawings.

This Dictionary of Fortifications is an attractive and convenient
reference for anyone with an interest in castles, forts, walled
cities and any other defensive architecture, including temporary
structures, of any period. The heart of the book is a useful
glossary of over 1,200 terms relating to fortifications through the
ages. Drawn from many languages besides English, each has at least
a concise definition or description, while more significant entries
take the form of short articles. Many are accompanied by a clear
sketch, diagram, cross-section, floor plan or map skilfully
executed by the author himself. In all there are over 400 of these
black and white illustrations. Although the glossary is organized
alphabetically (from Abatis to Zwischenwiderstandnet), cross
references allow the reader to easily follow themes of interest
through the book. Buttressing the glossary there is a section
giving an overview of the historical development of fortifications
from prehistory to the present day. A further chapter outlines the
concomitant development of siege warfare over the same long span,
detailing the evolution of siege engines and other tactics used to
overcome fortifications. This is a fascinating reference for anyone
with the slightest interest in military architecture.
Recent radiologic procedures in bone and joints, some of which
eliminate the need for surgery are exposed, including: trephine
biopsies of the thoracic and lumbar spine, sacro-iliac joints,
peripheral bones synovial membrane and soft tissues, using either
fluoroscopic echographic or CT guidance - chemonucleolysis -
vascular embolization of skeletal tumors and management of
vertebral hemangiomas - selective steroid injection in a broad
spectrum of diseases including vertebral facet syndrom,
cervicobrachial nerve root pain, rotator cuff calcium deposits,
bone cysts. This unique volume supplies the reader with complete
information regarding the performance of all these techniques.
From the time the Romans first set foot on England's shore in 55
BC, the British Isles have faced a constant threat of foreign
invasion. As a result, the landscapes of England, Scotland, and
Ireland are dotted with ancient defensive fortifications as varied
as their makers. Iron Age Celtic "hillforts," Roman castra and
Hadrian's Wall, Anglo-Saxon dykes and Alfredian burhs, Norman
mottes and stone-keeps, Edwardian castles, Irish tower houses--they
all served to repel ancient intruders and many still stand as
tangible relics of a remarkable past. This study chronicles the
development of British fortifications from prehistoric times
through the end of Richard III's reign in 1485, providing the
history of each type of structure, relevant examples, and
information on weapons and siege warfare. More than 250
illustrations vividly detail each ediface's construction and
configuration.
During the Nazi regime's swift rise to power, no single target of
nazification took higher priority than Germany's young people. Well
aware that the Nazi party could only thrive through the support of
future generations, Hitler instituted a youth movement, the Hitler
Jugend, which indoctrinated the easily malleable students of
Germany's schools and universities. Along with its female
counterpart in the Bund Deutscher Madel (The League of German
Girls), the Hitler Youth produced thousands of young Germans who
were deeply and fanatically indoctrinated into the Nazi racist
ideology. This illustrated book outlines the history and development
of the Hitler Youth from its origins in 1922 until it was disbanded
by the allied powers in 1945. The topics include: early German
non-Nazi and religious youth movements which were adapted and
absorbed by the Hitler Youth; Baldur von Schirach and other Reich
youth leaders; the Hitler Youth's organization, structure,
uniforms, ranking system, flags, and regalia; sports and other
common training activities; the place and role of women and girls
in the Third Reich; the appearance of German youth opposition
groups such as the Swing Youth and the Edelweiss Pirates; and the
origins, structure, and combat records of the 12th Waffen SS
division, which consisted primarily of Hitler Youth members. The
book also includes appendices providing a chronology and the Hitler
Youth's song ""Vorwarts! Vorwarts!"" (""Forward! Forward!"").
