Modern Architecture and the Mediterranean - Vernacular Dialogues and Contested Identities (Hardcover): Jean-Francois Lejeune,... Modern Architecture and the Mediterranean - Vernacular Dialogues and Contested Identities (Hardcover)
Jean-Francois Lejeune, Michelangelo Sabatino
R5,146 Discovery Miles 51 460 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

Bringing to light the debt twentieth-century modernist architects owe to the vernacular building traditions of the Mediterranean region, this book considers architectural practice and discourse from the 1920s to the 1980s. The essays here situate Mediterranean modernism in relation to concepts such as regionalism, nationalism, internationalism, critical regionalism, and postmodernism - an alternative history of the modern architecture and urbanism of a critical period in the twentieth century.

Sitte, Hegemann and the Metropolis - Modern Civic Art and International Exchanges (Paperback): Charles Bohl, Jean-Francois... Sitte, Hegemann and the Metropolis - Modern Civic Art and International Exchanges (Paperback)
Charles Bohl, Jean-Francois Lejeune
R1,429 Discovery Miles 14 290 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

These essays, from leading names in the field, weave together the parallels and differences between the past and present of civic art. Offering prospects for the first decades of the twenty-first century, the authors open up a broad international dialogue on civic art, which relates historical practice to the contemporary meaning of civic art and its application to community building within today's multi-cultural modern cities.

The volume brings together the rich perspectives on the thought, practice and influence of leading figures from the great era of civic art that began in the nineteenth century and blossomed in the early twentieth century as documented in the works of Werner Hegemann and his contemporaries and considered fundamental to contemporary practice.

Rural Utopia and Water Urbanism - The Modern Village in Franco's Spain (Paperback): Jean-Francois Lejeune Rural Utopia and Water Urbanism - The Modern Village in Franco's Spain (Paperback)
Jean-Francois Lejeune
R819 Discovery Miles 8 190 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

Post-Civil War Spain used the countryside as locus and symbol for the reconstruction and modernisation of the state. The Modern Village in Franco's Spain studies the reconstruction of the towns devastated between 1936 and 1939. It analyses the ideological, political, and urbanistic principles of Franco's hydro-social programme of modernisation of the countryside through the creation of man-made landscapes (Kulturlandschaften) of dams, irrigation canals, electric power plants, and new settlements - a genuine experiment in water urbanism. The consequent strategy of interior colonisation entailed the construction of 300 new villages or pueblos, each designed as a 'rural utopia' centred on a plaza mayor, which embodied, between tradition and modernity, the political ideal of civil life under the national-catholic regime. In the 1950s - 1960s, a new generation of architects, including Jose Luis Fernandez del Amo, Alejandro de la Sota, and Antonio Fernandez Alba, reimagined the pueblos as platforms of urban and architectonic experimentation in their search for an abstracted rural vernacular and an organic urban form merging with the landscape.

Cuban Modernism - Mid-Century Architecture 1940-1970 (Hardcover): Victor Deupi, Jean-Francois Lejeune Cuban Modernism - Mid-Century Architecture 1940-1970 (Hardcover)
Victor Deupi, Jean-Francois Lejeune
R1,332 Discovery Miles 13 320 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

In the 20th century, modern architecture thrived in Cuba and a wealth of buildings was realized prior to the revolution 1959 and in its wake. The designs comprise luxurious nightclubs and stylish hotels, sports facilities, elegant private homes and apartment complexes. Drawing on the vernacular, their architects defined a way to be modern and Cuban at the same time - creating an architecture oscillating between tradition and avantgarde. Audacious concrete shells, curving ramps, elegant brises-soleils and a fluidity of interior and exterior spaces are characteristic of an airy, often colorful architecture well-suited to life in the tropics. New photographs and drawings were specially prepared for this publication. A biographical survey portraits the 40 most important Cuban architects of the era.
