Jeff Anderson, Travis Leech, Melinda Clark
R1,752 Discovery Miles 17 520 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

Is this right? Is this how it's supposed to look? Adolescent writers often ask these kinds of questions because traditional grammar instruction focuses too much on what's right or what's wrong. The fear of making a mistake hides the true power of conventions - the creation of meaning, purpose, and effect, the ultimate reading-writing connection. Join Jeff Anderson, with Travis Leech and Melinda Clark, as they explore grammar in a new way in Patterns of Power: Inviting Adolescent Writers into the Conventions of Language, Grades 6 - 8. Let's lift middle school writers by focusing on possibility and producing effective writing that will transfer to the classroom and beyond. Inside Patterns of Power, Grades 6 - 8, teachers will find a quick yet comprehensive explanation of the invitational process-the easy-to-follow, brain-based process created to invite adolescent writers to learn about and apply conventions of the English language through the celebration of author's purpose and craft. This process is the foundation on which 55 authentic, flexible, and effective lesson sets were built. Through practical guidance and ready-to-use lessons, you'll be fully equipped to teach grammar in an engaging and authentic way in just 10 minutes a day. Inside you'll find: 55 standards-aligned lesson sets that include excerpts from high-interest, authentic, and diverse young adult and middle grade mentor texts Real-life classroom examples and tips gleaned from the authors' work facilitating the Patterns-of-Power process in hundreds of classrooms Resources to use in classroom instruction or as handouts for student literacy notebooks With hundreds of teach-tomorrow visuals and implementation supports that include quick-reference guides as well as soundtrack lists to infuse the joy of music into grammar instruction, Patterns of Power, Grades 6 - 8 gives you everything you need to inspire your adolescent writers to move beyond limitation and into the endless possibilities of what they can do as writers.

Patterns of Wonder - Inviting Emergent Writers to Play with the Conventions of Language (Paperback): Whitney La Rocca, Jeff... Patterns of Wonder - Inviting Emergent Writers to Play with the Conventions of Language (Paperback)
Whitney La Rocca, Jeff Anderson
R1,742 Discovery Miles 17 420 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

Based on the popular Patterns of Power invitational approach to grammar instruction, Patterns of Wonder sets the stage for introducing PreK-1 emergent writers to the power of language and writing. It's no secret that emergent writers thrive in classrooms filled with inquiry, play, and wonder, but how can we invite our youngest writers into the conventions of language, engage them in authentic writing experiences, and capitalize on their natural curiosity around what writers do? Building on the same playful qualities of the invitational process introduced in their bestselling Patterns of Power series, Whitney La Rocca and Jeff Anderson turn their instructional lens to our youngest writers, sharing new ways we can invite them to experiment, have fun, and take risks with writing and language. In this valuable resource, Whitney and Jeff: Introduce the Patterns of Wonder Phases of Emergent Writing as a way to reflect on the work young writers are doing and plan for effective, scaffolded instruction. Outline an adjusted invitational process, adapted especially for use with emergent writers. Position grammar and concepts about print instruction across three overlapping levels of support: oral language, illustrating, and writing. Include over 50 sample lessons that pinpoint and build cumulatively across the most common needs of emergent writers. Feature over 200 engaging picture book recommendations to stir curious classroom conversations. Grounded in play, conversation, and most of all, wonder, Patterns of Wonder brings Whitney and Jeff's irrepressible excitement for inquiry and writing instruction to the ways we support our Pre-K, Kindergarten and 1st grade emergent writers.

Jeff Anderson
R901 Discovery Miles 9 010 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

Whether writing a blog entry or a high-stakes test essay, fiction or nonfiction, short story or argumentation, students need to know certain things in order to write effectively. In 10 Things Every Writer Needs to Know, Jeff Anderson focuses on developing the concepts and application of ten essential aspects of good writing - motion, models, focus, detail, form, frames, cohesion, energy, words, and clutter. Throughout the book, Jeff provides dozens of model texts, both fiction and nonfiction, that bring alive the ten things every writer needs to know. By analysing strong mentor texts, young writers learn what is possible and experiment with the strategies professional writers use. Students explore, discover, and apply what makes good writing work. Jeff dedicates a chapter to each of the ten things every writer needs to know and provides mini-lessons, mentor texts, writing process strategies, and classroom tips that will motivate students to confidently and competently take on any writing task. With standardised tests and Common Core Curriculum influencing classrooms nationwide, educators must stay true to what works in writing instruction. 10 Things Every Writer Needs to Know keeps teachers on track - encouraging, discovering, inspiring, reminding, and improving writing through conversation, inquiry, and the support of good writing behaviours.

Mechanically Inclined - Building Grammar, Usage, and Style into Writer's Workshop (Paperback): Jeff Anderson Mechanically Inclined - Building Grammar, Usage, and Style into Writer's Workshop (Paperback)
Jeff Anderson
R885 Discovery Miles 8 850 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

Some teachers love grammar and some hate it, but nearly all struggle to find ways of making the mechanics of English meaningful to kids. As a middle school teacher, Jeff Anderson also discovered that his students were not grasping the basics, and that it was preventing them from reaching their potential as writers. Jeff readily admits, "I am not a grammarian, nor am I punctilious about anything," so he began researching and testing the ideas of scores of grammar experts in his classroom, gradually finding successful ways of integrating grammar instruction into writer's workshop.

"Mechanically Inclined" is the culmination of years of experimentation that merges the best of writer's workshop elements with relevant theory about how and why skills should be taught. It connects theory about using grammar in context with practical instructional strategies, explains why kids often don't understand or apply grammar and mechanics correctly, focuses on attending to the "high payoff," or most common errors in student writing, and shows how to carefully construct a workshop environment that can best support grammar and mechanics concepts. Jeff emphasizes four key elements in his teaching: short daily instruction in grammar and mechanics within writer's workshop;using high-quality mentor texts to teach grammar and mechanics in context;visual scaffolds, including wall charts, and visual cues that can be pasted into writer's notebooks;regular, short routines, like "express-lane edits," that help students spot and correct errors automatically.

Comprising an overview of the research-based context for grammar instruction, a series of over thirty detailed lessons, and an appendix of helpful forms and instructional tools, "Mechanically Inclined" is a boon to teachers regardless of their level of grammar-phobia. It shifts the negative, rule-plagued emphasis of much grammar instruction into one which celebrates the power and beauty these tools have in shaping all forms of writing.

Everyday Editing (Paperback): Jeff Anderson Everyday Editing (Paperback)
Jeff Anderson
R791 Discovery Miles 7 910 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

Editing is often seen as one item on a list of steps in the writing process--usually put somewhere near the end, and often completely crowded out of writer's workshop. Too many times daily editing lessons happen in a vacuum, with no relationship to what students are writing.

In "Everyday Editing," Jeff Anderson asks teachers to reflect on what sort of message this approach sends to students. Does it tell them that editing and revision are meaningful parts of the writing process, or just a hunt for errors with a 50/50 chance of getting it right--comma or no comma?

Instead of rehearsing errors and drilling students on what's wrong with a sentence, Jeff invites students to look carefully at their writing along with mentor texts, and to think about how punctuation, grammar, and style can be best used to hone and communicate meaning.

Written in Jeff's characteristically witty style, this refreshing and practical guide offers an overview of his approach to editing within the writing workshop as well as ten detailed sets of lessons covering everything from apostrophes to serial commas. These lessons can be used throughout the year to replace Daily Oral Language or error-based editing strategies with a more effective method for improving student writing.

R394 Discovery Miles 3 940 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

This document presents the results of the first three monitoring events to track the recovery of a repaired coral reef injured by the M/V Elpis vessel grounding incident of November 11, 1989. This grounding occurred within the boundaries of what at the time was designated the Key Largo National Marine Sanctuary (NMS), now designated the Key Largo NMS Existing Management Area within the Florida Keys National Marine Sanctuary (FKNMS). The restoration monitoring program tracks patterns of biological recovery, determines the success of restoration measures, and assesses the resiliency to environmental and anthropogenic disturbances of the site over time. To evaluate restoration success, reference habitats adjacent to the restoration site are concurrently monitored to compare the condition of restored reef areas with "natural" coral reef areas unimpacted by the vessel grounding or other injury. The monitoring program at the Elpis site includes an assessment of the structural stability of installed limestone restoration boulders, and comparison of the recovery of coral populations, to be performed on the following schedule: nine, ten, twelve, and fifteen years after restoration. Restoration of this site was completed in the summer of 1995 with monitoring planned to begin in following years. However, due to staffing and other logistical constraints, the first biological monitoring event for this site, used as a "pilot project" to establish data collection methods, was delayed until August 2004. In June and July 2005, the second monitoring event took place, and in August 2007, the third. This report presents the quantitative results of the latter two monitoring events.

This grounding occurred in Florida state waters within the boundaries of the Florida Keys National Marine Sanctuary (FKNMS). The monitoring program at the Connected site was to have included an assessment of the structural stability of installed restoration modules and biological condition of reattached corals performed on the following schedule: immediately (i.e., baseline), 1, 3, and 6 years after restoration and following a catastrophic event. Restoration of this site was completed on July 20, 2001. Due to unavoidable delays in the settlement of the case, the "baseline" monitoring event for this site occurred in July 2004. The catastrophic monitoring event occurred on August 31, 2004, some 2 1/2 weeks after the passage of Hurricane Charley which passed nearby, almost directly over the Dry Tortugas. Revision Decisions - Talking Through Sentences and Beyond (Paperback): Jeff Anderson, Deborah Dean Revision Decisions - Talking Through Sentences and Beyond (Paperback)
Jeff Anderson, Deborah Dean
R882 Discovery Miles 8 820 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

Revision is often a confusing and difficult process for students, but it's also the most important part of the writing process. Revision Decisions will help teachers develop the skills students need in an ever-evolving writing, language, and reading world. Focusing on sentences, Jeff Anderson and Deborah Dean use mentor texts to show the myriad possibilities that exist for revision. Essential to their process is the concept of classroom talk. Readers will be shown how revision lessons can be discussed in a generative way, and how each student can benefit from talking through the revision process as a group. Narratives, setup lessons, templates, and details about how to move students toward independence round out this essential book. Additionally, the authors weave the language, reading, and writing goals of the Common Core and other standards into an integrated and connected practice.
