Beyond the Archive - Memory, Narrative, and the Autobiographical Process (Hardcover): Jens Brockmeier Beyond the Archive - Memory, Narrative, and the Autobiographical Process (Hardcover)
Jens Brockmeier
R2,598 Discovery Miles 25 980 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

Our longstanding view of memory and remembering is in the midst of a profound transformation. This transformation does not only affect our concept of memory or a particular idea of how we remember and forget; it is a wider cultural process. In order to understand it, one must step back and consider what is meant when we say memory. Brockmeier's far-ranging studies offer such a perspective, synthesizing understandings of remembering from the neurosciences, humanities, social studies, and in key works of autobiographical literature and life-writing. His conclusions force us to radically rethink our very notion of memory as an archive of the past, one that suggests the natural existence of a distinctive human capacity (or a set of neuronal systems) enabling us to "encode," "store," and "recall" past experiences. Now, propelled by new scientific insights and digital technologies, a new picture is emerging. It shows that there are many cultural forms of remembering and forgetting, embedded in a broad spectrum of human activities and artifacts. This picture is more complex than any notion of memory as storage of the past would allow. Indeed it comes with a number of alternatives to the archival memory, one of which Brockmeier describes as the narrative approach. The narrative approach not only permits us to explore the storied weave of our most personal form of remembering-that is, the autobiographical-it also sheds new light on the interrelations among memory, self, and culture.

Literacy, Narrative and Culture (Paperback): Jens Brockmeier, David R. Olson, Min Wang Literacy, Narrative and Culture (Paperback)
Jens Brockmeier, David R. Olson, Min Wang
R1,677 Discovery Miles 16 770 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

An important contribution to the multi-disciplinary study of literacy, narrative and culture, this work argues that literacy is perhaps best described as an ensemble of socially and historically embedded activities of cultural practices. It suggests viewing written language, producing and distributing, deciphering and interpreting signs, are closely related to other cultural practices such as narrative and painting.

The papers of the first and second parts illustrate this view in contexts that range from the pre-historical beginnings of tracking signs' in hunter-gatherer cultures, and the emergence of modern literate traditions in Europe in the 17th to 19th century, to the future of electronically mediated writing in times of the post-Gutenberg galaxy. The chapters of the third present results of recent research in developmental and educational psychology.

Contributions by leading experts in the field make the point that there is no theory and history of writing that does not presuppose a theory of culture and social development. At the same time, it demonstrates that every theory and history of culture must unavoidably entail a theory and history of writing and written culture.

This book brings together perspectives on literacy from psychology, linguistics, history and sociology of literature, philosophy, anthropology, and history of art. It addresses these issues in plain language not coded in specialized jargon and addresses a multi-disciplinary forum of scholars and students of literacy, narrative and culture.

Health, Illness and Culture - Broken Narratives (Paperback): Lars-Christer Hyden, Jens Brockmeier Health, Illness and Culture - Broken Narratives (Paperback)
Lars-Christer Hyden, Jens Brockmeier
R1,518 Discovery Miles 15 180 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

This collection of essays examines the interrelations between illness, disability, health, society, and culture. The contributors examine how "narratives" have emerged and been utilized within these areas to help those who have experienced d injury, disability, dementia, pain, grief, or psychological trauma to express their stories. Encompassing clinical case studies, ethnographic field studies and autobiographical case studies, Health, Illness and Culture offers a broad overview and critical analysis of the present state of "illness narratives" within the fields of health and social welfare.

Recognizing the existence of the subculture of disability is an important part of an interdisciplinary field reborn in the 1980s. These ten essays cover some of the most dynamic ranges of study and largely work within the societal model, although some touch on appropriation of disability and the medical model. They begin with a consideration of the passage from the retold narrative about wellness and not-wellness to the performed story, then comment about dialog on trauma, the importance of broken and vicarious voices in narrative, the instance of neurotrauma and the associated response to catastrophe, the stories that do not end in a return to "normalcy," silence and talk about HIV, narratives of death by survivors and mourners, the case of contested illness and the traditional fight against the medical, the narratives compelled by emotions behind breaking up, and the strange promise of dementia.

Beyond Loss - Dementia, Identity, Personhood (Hardcover): Lars C. Hyden, Hilde Lindemann, Jens Brockmeier Beyond Loss - Dementia, Identity, Personhood (Hardcover)
Lars C. Hyden, Hilde Lindemann, Jens Brockmeier
R2,453 Discovery Miles 24 530 Ships in 18 - 22 working days

Coming to terms with dementia is one of the great challenges of our time. This volume of new interdisciplinary essays by internationally established scholars offers new ways of understanding and dealing with it. It explores views of dementia that go beyond the idea of loss, and rather envisions it as multilayered transformation and change of personhood and identity, and as development that mostly is socially shared with others. The studies collected here identify new empirical, theoretical, and methodological areas that will be crucial to future research and clinical practice concerned with age-related dementia. Three general themes are singled out as of particular importance and interest: persons and personhood, identity and agency, and the social and the communal.

Greenspeak - A Study of Environmental Discourse (Paperback): Rom Harre, Jens Brockmeier, Peter Muhlhausler Greenspeak - A Study of Environmental Discourse (Paperback)
Rom Harre, Jens Brockmeier, Peter Muhlhausler
R3,968 Discovery Miles 39 680 Ships in 18 - 22 working days

In this remarkably interdisciplinary examination of the discourse of environmentalism, the authors explore the linguistic, philosophical, psychological and cultural-historical aspects of environmental discourse; rather than environmental phenomena themselves. This volume is not advocacy on environmentalism, rather, it is an analysis of the means of persuasion and the techniques of advocacy used by both sides of the environmental debate between ôconservationistsö and ôconservatives.ö Based on studies conducted between 1992 and 1996, the book includes an analysis of the concepts of time and space in their linguistic manifestations. Another theme is the interdependencies of the natural world with political and economic institutions. Ultimately, it is a call to action, as the authors see in the increasing ôgreeningö of English and other Western languages, a kind of linguistic way of replacing or postponing action with talk alone. A groundbreaking volume, Greanspeak will promote dialogue among professionals and students in the fields of environmental issues, linguistics, discourse, psychology, and public policy.
