In Phenomena of Power, one of the leading figures of postwar German sociology reflects on the nature, and many forms of, power. For Heinrich Popitz, power is rooted in the human condition and is therefore part of all social relations. Drawing on philosophical anthropology, he identifies the elementary forms of power to provide detailed insight into how individuals gain and perpetuate control over others. Instead of striving for a power-free society, Popitz argues, humanity should try to impose limits on power where possible and establish counterpower where necessary. Phenomena of Power delves into the sociohistorical manifestations of power and breaks through to its general structures. Die Beitrage des Bandes setzen sich mit den "Strukturen der Lebenswelt" als Analyseinstrument fur phanomenologisch-sozialwissenschaftliche Forschungen auseinander und beschaftigen sich mit den vielfaltigen Anschlussmoeglichkeiten fur qualitativ-empirische Untersuchungen. Zum einen werden (1) die "Strukturen der Lebenswelt" insbesondere Thomas Luckmann zufolge inAnlehnung an Edmund Husserl als mathesis universalis verstanden, die eine elementare Struktur allen menschlichen Verhaltens darstellt und somit als tertium comparationis fur die empirische, sozio-historisch ausgerichtete Sozialforschung dient. Aus dieser Perspektive muss die phanomenologische Beschreibung der Lebenswelt als "Protosoziologie" verstanden werden, die das Problem der Vergleichbarkeit historischer Daten loest. Phanomenologie und Soziologie gleichen in diesem Sinne in einer "Parallelaktion" ihre Erkenntnisse ab, indem die erkenntnistheoretische phanomenologische Fundierung die soziologische empirische Rekonstruktion absichert. Zum anderen wird (2) im Anschluss an Schutz/Luckmann vor allem im USamerikanischen Kontext die Variante einer "phanomenologischen Soziologie" vorgeschlagen,die auf das Verstehen, Beschreiben und Analysieren der Lebenswelt abzielt, so wie sie von denjenigen erfahren wird, die in ihr leben. In einer Abgrenzung vom Positivismus und Behaviorismus wird die Suspension der naturlichen Einstellung, die Aufdeckung verdeckter Hintergrundannahmen eingefordert und zum Sehen-der-Phanomene-wie-sie-sind - etwa im Sinne von Harold Garfinkels Ethnomethodologie - aufgerufen.

Dieser Band geht u.a. der Frage nach, wie eine Verbindung zwischen der streng egologisch, reflexiv vorgehenden Phanomenologie und den empirisch und historisch ausgerichteten Sozialwissenschaften hergestellt werden kann. Zudem werden folgende Fragestellungen aufgegriffen: Wie kann im Spannungsfeld von phanomenologischer und sozialwissenschaftlicher Forschung die Herausbildung sozialer Beziehungs-, Vergemeinschaftungs-, Abgrenzungsphanomene erklart werden? Verschiedenartige Antworten auf diese Fragen offeriert vorliegender Sammelband."

Der Band erortert die Bedeutung der Phanomenologie fur die Soziologie. Die 35 Autorinnen und Autoren erkunden und diskutieren die Anregungen, Chancen und Ertrage phanomenologischen Denkens fur die Sozialtheorie ebenso wie fur die empirische Sozialforschung. Hierzu werden in dem Band Beitrage zu soziologischen Begriffs- und Theorieproblemen, zu methodisch-methodologischen Aspekten und zu aktuellen Gegenwartsfragen versammelt. Diese vermitteln nicht nur einen umfassenden Uberblick uber den augenblicklichen Stand einer in der Soziologie in jungster Zeit wieder verstarkt gefuhrten Auseinandersetzung mit der Phanomenologie, sondern sie beziehen auch pointiert Stellung innerhalb dieser Debatte.
