The Grey Undercurrent - Whalers and Littoral Societies at the Deep Beaches of Africa (1770-1920) (Hardcover): Felix Schurmann The Grey Undercurrent - Whalers and Littoral Societies at the Deep Beaches of Africa (1770-1920) (Hardcover)
Felix Schurmann; Translated by Joe Paul Kroll
R3,213 Discovery Miles 32 130 Ships in 12 - 19 working days

By extending their voyages to all oceans from the 1760s onward, whaling vessels from North America and Europe spanned a novel net of hunting grounds, maritime routes, supply posts, and transport chains across the globe. For obtaining provisions, cutting firewood, recruiting additional men, and transshipping whale products, these highly mobile hunters regularly frequented coastal places and islands along their routes, which were largely determined by the migratory movements of their prey. American-style pelagic whaling thus constituted a significant, though often overlooked factor in connecting people and places between distant world regions during the long nineteenth century. Focusing on Africa, this book investigates side-effects resulting from stopovers by whalers for littoral societies on the economic, social, political, and cultural level. For this purpose it draws on eight local case studies, four from Africa's west coast and four from its east coast. In the overall picture, the book shows a broad range of effects and side-effects of different forms and strengths, which it figures as a "grey undercurrent" of global history.

Veli Matt Karkkainen, Kim Kyoung-Jae, Paul S. Chung
R1,072 Discovery Miles 10 720 Ships in 12 - 19 working days

In this volume, an attempt is undertaken to highlight the genesis, progress, and transformation of the Asian contextual theology of minjung, introducing its historical point of departure, its development, and its transformation in light of younger Korean and Korean American scholars' endeavors. In this regard, the new Asian contextual theology, which is emerging, strives to integrate both minjung and the wisdom of World Religions into its own framework and direction, assuming the character of a public theology and remaining humble and open before God's mystery, while featuring its association with minjung in a holistic way.

R3,870 Discovery Miles 38 700 Ships in 12 - 19 working days

Currently, there are no textbooks on drug product manufacturing technology transfer that incorporate the latest regulatory expectations. Recent guidance from regulatory bodies such as the US FDA, EMEA, WHO, and PIC/S has adopted the ICH Lifecycle approach harmonizing concepts across regulatory guidance. This allows organizations to align their technology transfer activities for all regulated markets. However, there is a need for consensus and direction in approaching technology transfer, particularly in understanding how to manage the scale-up effects to ensure regulatory compliance. This textbook offers technology transfer solutions and guidance to the pharmaceutical industry. The chapters provide a systematic understanding of applying the technology transfer concepts in pharmaceutical manufacturing, promoting standardization within the industry. Since Stage 1b is not specified in detail within the regulations, pharmaceutical organizations are left to determine the requirements of the stage. The need to justify the methodologies and utilization of sound science makes it more demanding. The textbook’s authors provide innovative solutions for technology transfer challenges, making it a comprehensive reference document. The approaches can be applied to both small-molecule and large-molecule drug product manufacturing segments, addressing the unmet needs of the industry.

Rigorism of Truth - "Moses the Egyptian" and Other Writings on Freud and Arendt (Paperback): Hans Blumenberg Rigorism of Truth - "Moses the Egyptian" and Other Writings on Freud and Arendt (Paperback)
Hans Blumenberg; Translated by Joe Paul Kroll; Edited by Ahlrich Meyer
R828 Discovery Miles 8 280 Ships in 12 - 19 working days

In "Moses the Egyptian"-the centerpiece of Rigorism of Truth, the German philosopher Hans Blumenberg addresses two defining figures in the intellectual history of the twentieth century: Sigmund Freud and Hannah Arendt. Unpublished during his lifetime, this essay analyzes Freud's Moses and Monotheism (1939) and Arendt's Eichmann in Jerusalem (1963), and discovers in both a principled rigidity that turns into recklessness because it is blind to the politics of the unknown. Offering striking insights into the importance of myth in politics and the extent to which truth can be tolerated in adversity, the essay also provides one of the few instances where Blumenberg reveals his thinking about Judaism and Zionism. Rigorism of Truth also includes commentaries by Ahlrich Meyer that give a fuller understanding of the philosopher's engagement with Freud, Arendt, and the Eichmann trial, as well as situating these reflections in the broader context of Blumenberg's life and thought.
