Aristotle's Nicomachean Ethics is the text which had the single greatest influence on Aquinas's ethical writings, and the historical and philosophical value of Aquinas's appropriation of this text provokes lively debate. In this volume of new essays, thirteen distinguished scholars explore how Aquinas receives, expands on, and transforms Aristotle's insights about the attainability of happiness, the scope of moral virtue, the foundation of morality, and the nature of pleasure. They examine Aquinas's commentary on the Ethics and his theological writings, above all the Summa theologiae. Their essays show Aquinas to be a highly perceptive interpreter, but one who also who also brings certain presuppositions to the Ethics and alters key Aristotelian notions for his own purposes. The result is a rich and nuanced picture of Aquinas's relation to Aristotle that will be of interest to readers in moral philosophy, Aquinas studies, the history of theology, and the history of philosophy.

Feeling, wanting, and acting are typically understood solely in terms of the individual. What does it mean, then, when we share feelings, have a common goal, or act jointly? This volume addresses the social dimension of these phenomena from diverse philosophical perspectives and from a sociological viewpoint. It reveals that sociality plays a constitutive part in our feeling, wanting, and acting.

The conference Mathematical Methods in Computer Science (MMICS) was held in the memory of Thomas Beth during December 17-19 in Karlsruhe. The c- ference was meant to re?ect the many interests of Thomas Beth. Even though these interests might seem diverse the mathematical methods employed and - pecially algebra as a language were the common denominator of all his scienti?c achievements. The 12 contributed talks reaching from t-designs to integrated circuits were selected from 30 submissions from 14 countries. The contributed talks were complemented by three invited talks. Teo Mora gave a talk on "Decoding Cyclic Codes: The Cooper Philosophy" embracing the areas of coding theory and symbolic computation. These areas were especially appreciated by Thomas Beth, because they combine algebra and algorithmics. Richard Jozsa lectured about "Embedding Classical into Quantum Compu- tion" in the area of quantum information. Quantum information was a focus of research of Tomas Beth since 1993 when he co-organized one of the e- liest workshops on quantum cryptography in Dagstuhl. Quantum information became his passion in 1994 when the connection between the Fourier transf- mation and breaking the RSA crypto system became apparent via Shor's al- rithm, which can factor integers in polynomial time on a quantum computer. The Fourier transform and cryptography were topics that played an important role in Thomas Beth's research and this connection, once again, justi?ed his broad view on computer science.

Is philosophy endangered by a scientific culture increasingly influenced by demands of utility and efficiency? What are the goals and intentions of philosophy, and what are the reasons that one practices philosophy at all? The main questions of this collection concern the self-understanding of philosophy. Prominent authors consider historical, systematic, and social approaches to this question and discuss possible answers. The purpose is not merely to legitimate philosophical practice but to understand what such practice consists in at all.
